Kushima is a city located in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. The city was founded on November 3, 1954. As of April 1, 2017, the city has an estimated population of 18,179 and a population density of 62 persons per km2. The total area is 294.91 km2 . The city is served by the Nichinan Line of the JR Kyūshū railway system, which links it to the west to Shibushi in neighbouring Kagoshima Prefecture and to the north to the prefectural capital, Miyazaki. Within the boundaries of the municipality lies the island of Kōjima, known for the field studies site of the Primate Research Institute, where studies on wild-living Japanese macaque monkeys are carried out.

  • 2. Kanoya Air Base Museum Kanoya
    Kanoya Air Field is a military aerodrome of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Kanoya Air Base . It is located 1.5 NM southwest of Kanoya in the Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Runway 08R/26L is equipped with ILS. On April 6 2016 a U-125 aircraft operated by the Flight Check Squadron of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force crashed near the base, with all six crew members being killed. It had been checking the base's air navigation aid system.After some years of discussion it was announced in July 2018 that the base will be used by the US military. United States Marine Corps KC-130 aerial tankers will use the base.The Kanoya Air Base Museum is located at the base.
