Inverness is a city on Scotland’s northeast coast, where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth. It's the largest city and the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands. Its Old Town features 19th-century Inverness Cathedral, the mostly 18th-century Old High Church and an indoor Victorian Market selling food, clothing and crafts. The contemporary Inverness Museum and Art Gallery traces local and Highland history.

Inverness meaning Mouth of the River Ness) is a city in the Scottish Highlands. Inverness is the administrative centre for the Highland council area, and is regarded as the capital of the Highlands. Inverness lies near two important battle sites: the 11th-century battle of Blàr nam Fèinne against Norway which took place on The Aird and the 18th-century Battle of Culloden which took place on Culloden Moor.

Inverness is the northernmost city in the United Kingdom and lies within the Great Glen (Gleann Mòr) at its north-eastern extremity where the River Ness enters the Moray Firth. At the latest, a settlement was established by the 6th century with the first royal charter being granted by Dabíd mac Maíl Choluim (King David I) in the 12th century. The Gaelic king Mac Bethad Mac Findláich (MacBeth) whose 11th-century murder of King Duncan was immortalised in Shakespeare's play Macbeth, held a castle within the city where he ruled as Mormaer of Moray and Ross.

Inverness College is the main campus for the University of the Highlands and Islands. With around 8,500 students, Inverness College hosts around a quarter of all the University of the Highlands and Islands' students, and 30% of those studying to degree level.

Inverness is linked to the Black Isle across the Moray Firth by the Kessock Bridge. It has a railway station with Abellio ScotRail services to Perth, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Thurso, Wick and Kyle of Lochlash. Inverness Airport is located 15 km east of the city and has scheduled flights to airports across the UK including London, Manchester, Belfast and the islands to the north and west of Scotland. Inverness is connected to London Euston by the Caledonian Sleeper, which departs six times a week and by the Virgin Trains East Coast operated Highland Chieftain to London King's Cross which runs daily.

Kyle of Lochalsh | Scottish Highlands & Islands Travelogue 2018 | S1E5

We catch the ferry from Craignure on the Isle of Mull back to Oban on the Scottish mainland. We then make the scenic (but rainy) drive north up to Fort William on Loch Linnhe, and then through Glen Sheil over to the Kyle of Lochalsh and Eilean Donan Castle. No camping today, but we do book a room at the Hotel Balmacara where we get a comfortable night's sleep and a good meal. We're surprised to see another Scotland Overland Land Rover at the hotel, but we don't run into the occupants.

This series follows our 2-week Scottish Highlands and Islands adventure from October 2018. Join us as we drive over 1,500 miles in 14 days and visit the islands of Mull, Iona, Harris, Lewis and Skye, and drive parts of the NC500 Scottish Highlands route.

The Lochalsh area on the north west coast of Scotland is beautiful at any time of year and in any weather conditions. But when the sun shines in autumn it is stunning. We spent a week in a wooden lodge near Duirinish near Plockton......and meandered !

Plockton is a village in the Highlands of Scotland in the county of Ross and Cromarty with a population of 378. Plockton is a settlement on the shores of Loch Carron. It faces east, away from the prevailing winds, which together with the North Atlantic Drift gives it a mild climate allowing the Cordyline australis palm or cabbage tree to prosper.

Most of the houses date from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It was a planned community based on fishing in an attempt to stem the tide of emigration from the Highlands. The Church of Scotland in the village (also used by the Free Church of Scotland) was designed by Thomas Telford.

The village is a tourist resort. The television series Hamish Macbeth, starring Robert Carlyle, was filmed there, substituting for the fictional Lochdubh. Plockton was also used for various scenes in the film The Wicker Man and the Inspector Alleyn Mysteries television series.

The village has a small general store with a café; a takeaway; a restaurant; newsagent and craft shop; three hotels with pubs; numerous B&Bs; library with free internet access and a village hall, which holds community events and art exhibitions. It is served by Plockton railway station, on the Kyle of Lochalsh Line and the short Plockton Airfield for light aircraft and microlights.

Nearby is Duncraig Castle, a nineteenth-century stately home built by the Matheson family, who made their money in the opium trade. The castle was derelict for many years, having previously been used as an hospital, catering college, and a base for film crews. It was once owned by the extended Dobson family who were in the process of renovating it and this was shown in the BBC documentary titled The Dobsons of Duncraig. The castle was sold in 2009 to Suzanne Hazeldine. Plockton has been a popular location for many artists including those from The Edinburgh School (Adam Bruce Thomson, David Macbeth Sutherland) and continues to attract artists.

The Isle of Skye, connected to Scotland's northwest coast by bridge, is known for its rugged landscapes, picturesque fishing villages and medieval castles. The largest island in the Inner Hebrides archipelago, it has an indented coastline of peninsulas and narrow lochs, radiating out from a mountainous interior. The town of Portree, a base for exploring the island, features harbourside pubs and boutiques.

Isle of Skye is the largest and northernmost of the major islands in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The island's peninsulas radiate from a mountainous centre dominated by the Cuillins, the rocky slopes of which provide some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the country. Although it has been suggested that the Gaelic Sgitheanach describes a winged shape there is no definitive agreement as to the name's origins.

The main industries are tourism, agriculture, fishing and forestry. Skye is part of the Highland Council local government area. The island's largest settlement is Portree, known for its picturesque harbour. There are links to various nearby islands by ferry and, since 1995, to the mainland by a road bridge. The climate is mild, wet and windy. The abundant wildlife includes the golden eagle, red deer and Atlantic salmon. The local flora are dominated by heather moor, and there are nationally important invertebrate populations on the surrounding sea bed. Skye has provided the locations for various novels and feature films and is celebrated in poetry and song.

Portree in the north at the base of Trotternish is the largest settlement and is the main service centre on the island. Broadford, the location of the island's only airstrip, is on the east side of the island and Dunvegan in the north-west is well known for its castle and the nearby Three Chimneys restaurant. The 18th-century Stein Inn on the Waternish coast is the oldest pub on Skye. Kyleakin is linked to Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland by the Skye Bridge, which spans the narrows of Loch Alsh. Uig, the port for ferries to the Outer Hebrides, is on the west of the Trotternish peninsula and Edinbane is between Dunvegan and Portree. Much of the rest of the population lives in crofting townships scattered around the coastline.

Skye is linked to the mainland by the Skye Bridge, while ferries sail from Armadale on the island to Mallaig, and from Kylerhea to Glenelg. Ferries also run from Uig to Tarbert on Harris and Lochmaddy on North Uist, and from Sconser to Raasay. Plockton & Loch Carron - Highlands - Scotland

This beautiful wee fishing village profits from the Gulf stream hence the Palm Trees. If you have never visited Plockton then I would recommend it as it is spectacular. Plockton which is on the banks of Loch Carron can be found just 5 miles north of Kyle of Lochalsh.

Day 11 Scottish Road Trip : Skye to Inverness 28/03/16

Selected video clips and photos of Day 11 of our fabulous road trip in Scotland. Today was a transition day as we left the beautiful island of Skye in the morning and arrived in Inverness in the evening. On the way, our highlights included the Eilean Donan Castle, Glen Shiel, Fort Augustus and the locks, Castle Urquhart, and The Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition. Now in Inverness we are ready next day to start the North Coast 500 route.
