JORNADAS MEDIEVALES de Cortegana (Huelva)
Situada en pleno Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche (Reserva de la Biosfera) de la provincia de Huelva, el municipio de Cortegana se alza, esbelto, impregnado por el frescor de castaños, robles, encinas y alcornoques.
Según una leyenda popular, el pueblo de esta villa se levantó y luchó contra la corte que vivía en el castillo, y la ganaron. Desde entonces, se empezaron a referir a ella como la corte ganá, y con el tiempo, se fue conociendo como el pueblo de Cortegana.
El bien conservado Castillo de Cortegana es el emblema de esta ciudad, coronándola desde lo alto, tras su construcción a finales del siglo XIII. Fue declarado Bien de Interés Cultural.
Su mayor atractivo turístico son las Jornadas Medievales, celebradas cada año en el mes de agosto, y en las que tienen lugar Congresos, Festivales, Torneos, Exposiciones y toda una gama de pintorescas y atractivas actividades que nos trasladan en el tiempo, a una época de colorido, bullicio, música, risas y bailes, por sus calles medievales.

Admission into the castle is free! It is open 7 days a week - the Castle gardens are very large and also free. So really no excuse for not visiting the site! It is easy to reach it - either via the Antrim Road or M2 from Belfast - in car or bus from Belfast City Centre. It is less than 5 miles out of town.
Belfast Castle is situated on the sweeping slopes of Cavehill Country Park in Belfast, the capital city of Northern Ireland. Located four hundred feet above sea level, it provides a magnificent view of the city and Belfast Lough. For directions to the castle from Belfast - the quickest way by car would be via the M2 - a journey of less than 5 miles from the centre of the city. Bus routes up the Antrim Road towards Glengormley would take you past it - or using one of the hop-on hop-off buses - like Titanic or City Tours which stop at the castle is a great option (
Belfast Castle History
The original Belfast Castle was built in the 12th century by the Normans in the town of Belfast itself in what is now Belfast city center. The castle was home to the 1st Baron Chichester (Sir Arthur Chichester), but unfortunately it was burned down in 1708. The Chichesters decided to forgo the original site and rebuild their new residence in the suburbs, right where today's Belfast Castle is located.
Designed in the Scottish baronial style by Charles Lanyon and his son, the new castle was built during the period from 1811 to 1870 by the 3rd Marquess of Donegall. After Donegall's death and the family's financial demise, The 8th Earl of Shaftesbury oversaw the completion of the construction process.
The 9th Earl of Shaftesbury was the one who presented the castle to the City of Belfast in 1934. The Belfast City Council began a major refurbishment over a period of ten years beginning in 1978 at a cost of over 2 million pounds. The building officially re-opened to the public on 11 November 1988.
The castle boasts an antiques shop, a restaurant and visitors center and it is a popular venue for conferences, private dining and wedding receptions.
The Shaftesbury family were very generous donors to Belfast, supporting many charities and hosting garden parties in the castle grounds. The 9th Earl of Shaftesbury became Lord Mayor of Belfast in 1907 and chancellor of Queen's University in 1908.
The castle belonged to the family until they presented the estate to the City of Belfast in 1934.
Modern history
After the Second World War and until the 1970s, Belfast Castle was a popular venue for wedding receptions, dances and afternoon tea parties.
In 1978 the castle closed as part of a refurbishment process that cost an estimated £2 million and was overseen by Hewitt and Haslam Partnership architects. It reopened in 1988 and now hosts weddings, conferences and various other events.
Belfast Castle Facts
Belfast Castle is one of the most striking buildings in Belfast that welcomes hundreds of visitors who usually enjoy afternoon tea in the Castle Tavern or take a leisurely stroll around the gardens.
The Donegall coat-of-arms is situated right above the front door of Belfast Castle. A section of the Shaftesbury crest is also situated on the exterior staircase, which has now become popular spot for wedding photography. The castle boasts a six-story square tower and the entrance faces the steep slope of the hillside and has a porch with decorative Doric columns.
In 1894 the principal rooms were connected to the terrace below by an Italian style serpentine outside staircase that was a gift from the 9th Earl of Shaftesbury to his mother.
As you see in the photos - there is a myth surrounding the castle - that it will be safe from any disaster as long as there is a cat in the grounds. Hence in the garden itself - you will spot cats everywhere (in stone work, hedges, seats, and more!) Kids will have great fun trying to find them all.
Part of the Cavehill Country Park
The castle's estate now forms a part of the Cave Hill Country Park. The park has three trails, one of which rises up the hill past the caves to McArt's Fort.

You don't need a car; you can walk 150 meters to the beach. This beach is family friendly. Also you can find there the Sea Port and some fairground for children.
You can enjoy walking along the lovely promenade (Paseo Marítimo) of Fuengirola. You will find all kind of restaurants, bars and beach clubs and the typical Spanish beach bars (chiringuitos). Supermarkets, restaurants, shops, hairdresser are also in walking distance.
From the airport is takes only 25 minutes by taxi or 30 minutes by train.
The city of Fuengirola is about 20 minutes' drive from Marbella and 25 minutes from Puerto Banus.
You can visit Gibraltar in less than 1 hour.
To Benalmadena, Torremolinos, Arroyo de la Miel, Torreblanca, Carvajal and Mijas it takes a few minutes by car, bus or train.
There are many golf courses up and down the coast and for non-golfers there are many other things to keep you entertained, including: water sports, fishing, diving, Aquapark (Torremolinos and Mijas), horse riding, tennis, horse racing, Zoo (Bioparc Fuengirola), Tivoli World theme park for children, Selwo Zoo, Selwo Dolphinarium and a large shopping mall (Miramar) with a multiplex cinema with latest movies shown in English.
