Places to see in ( Antibes - France ) Chapelle de la Garoupe
The Notre - Dame de la Garoupe church is a Catholic church located in Antibes , France. The chapel is located in the French department of Alpes-Maritimes , in the town of Antibes. The building is registered as a historic monument on October 29, 1926.
After two years of restoration in the rules of the art, the chapel of Garoupe , classified in the inventory of historical monuments and place of worship dedicated reopened its doors to visitors and worshipers. An emblematic and patrimonial site, the Sanctuary of La Garoupe (where La Garoupe and Calvaire Chapel are located) is also a very popular place offering an exceptional panorama of the city.
Local tradition has it that in ancient times this place was dedicated to Selene, goddess of the moon. According to legend, at the beginning of IV th century AD, Saint Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, who made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire would have stopped to Antipolis and would have liked to see build a chapel on the plateau of the Garoupe.
From the current building, one can distinguish three buildings whose chronology is difficult to determine: a tower, the chapel of Our Lady of the Guard and the chapel Saint Helena . The tower could be the first building constructed, first in wood, then hard in the XV th century.
