GR11 Hiking Trail - Spanish Pyrenees
This video clip was my second hiking trip on the GR11. The first time back in 2000 I hiked from Ordessa Canyon to Benasque. On this trip I continued from where I left off and hiked a further 10 days along the mountain range. So far I have walked approximately 20 days out of the full 46 day trip. The first time I navigated with an array of Spanish Military and Civilian Maps - not accurate. 95% of the trail is well marked but it can be challenging finding that 5%. This 2005 trip I used Paul Lucia's Guide printed by Cicerone Press - a highly recommended and excellent little guide and is all I used. Some of the days I altered and wild camped instead - plenty of opportunities along the entire route.
I truly love this region best hiking in Western Europe, far better than the touristy French or Swiss Alps. I would also recommend looking at the Picos de Europa if you enjoy wild limestone mountain landscapes. If I recall the western Massif of the Picos de Europa was the best but the path can be vague and navigation is much harder than the GR11. The other factor is cloud sweeps in off the Bay of Biscay usually in the afternoon whereas the weather in the Pyrenees is steady.
HIKING IN SOUTHEASTERN FRANCE: LES GORGES DU VERDON
My husband and I are currently located in the south of France where we have lived for the past 7 months. We will be moving back to America next month and have decided to spend 3 days hiking in the Verdon Gorge.It is something we had always wanted to do and I am so glad we got to experience this. It is absolutely a must do.
The Verdon Gorge, in southeastern France, is a river canyon that is often considered to be one of Europe's most beautiful. It is about 25 kilometers long and up to 700 meters deep. Serene hike to the Lake Bouillouses Natural Site in Pyrenees-Orientales, France
It was the first day of our 2 day hike to the Pic Carlit (2921m). This bright sunny day started at the camping Pla de Barres and we planned to walk around 10 kms to the lake Pradeilles.
We were so excited to do this hike as it's been a long time since we ascended the peak Puigmal last year. All the first part of the trail was a very easy and relaxing walk along the banks of the river Tet. It is one of our favourit type of routes where you really get to enjoy the shadow of the forest and the water flowing nearby. It's been really tempting to get in the water and to take the bath in the river as there were some deep places where the water could be quite warm. The ground under our feet was very soft and bouncy to step at because of the amount of peat in it and it was such a nice feeling. Sometimes the trail was becoming very muddy and slippery but most of the time it was following the little forest paths. We met lots of beautiful flowers and greenery on the way as well as cows and horse pastures. And this land is known to be one of the best pasture lands in the region. We guess it's because of the abundance of water and thus lots of grass for the cattle. We tasted some wild strawberries and they were very sweet and delicious. Then to our sight opened up the view of the mountain range in the distance and one of them was our goal -Pic Carlit. The day was quite hot as it was the start of August and we were really glad to see the clouds coming out at one point. And we learnt throughout this year of hiking that the clouds are the blessing for a hiker and not necessarily mean the bad weather even though the footage can look less bright and cheerful. Closer to an end we had to conquer a steep uphill and got out to the lake Pradeilles. There we found a very nice place to camp right at the lakeside and we were glad to see the signs of the camping allowed in this area. This way we felt more secure and not concerned about hiding our tent or anything. And we were lucky to get a very picturesque spot all to ourselves even though there were lots of people hiking around. So we put up our tent, collected some water from the lake, cooked and ate our dinner and after watching the sun hiding behind the peaks we were out to sleep. And the next day was promising some new exciting adventures...

There are place in the mountains where I have fond memories. This outlook, that peak, a valley where I've camped two, three, multiple times. This applies as much in the Lake District, Snowdonia and Scotland as much as the Pyrenees.
It's easy to understand this when they are places of domestic comfort. The camp site at Lescun for example, from which I started my first backpacking trip in 2009 and again this year in 2014. The camp site at Gavarnie, where I've rested I think four times. The camp site at Cauterets, three or four. Twice at Bujaruelo. Possibly most poignant, because I love it there, Camping Los Banos in the Esera valley near Benasque.
You get the same feeling at the mountain huts. Here again as before to enjoy (hopefully) good food, probably good company, and a pleasant sheltered evening. I enjoyed Oulette de Gaube as I always do but after dinner, for the duration of the night, it was rather disastrous as I've spoken about elsewhere.
The refuge is on the Haute Route Pyrenees or HRP

University of Toulouse 1 Capitole had an organized hike for students so my friends and I decided to enjoy a nice day in the sun climbing to the summit of Pic du Lion. Don't worry Maggie was out adventuring solo in Albi, a beautiful French city, a city that is the epitome of the Occitanie region of France. Her video is coming soon!
It was a gorgeous day with temperatures reaching a high of 19 celcieus (66 Fahrenheit), but with direct sun we were sweating the whole way. We conquered Pic du Lion which was a strenuous hike, reaching an altitude of 2102 meters (6896 feet). At the top we had a comforting lunch of sandwiches, cheese, chocolate, cookies, and granola. Adil, had accomplished two firsts in the world. The first Kazakhstani to reach the summit of Pic du Lion, and the first Kazakhstani to carry an empty can of tuna fish from the summit of Pic du Lion all the way to the base of the mountain!!
