The Haunted Kennebunk Inn (June, 2013)
The Haunted Kennebunk Inn
When planning our Maine vacation, I wanted a central location near or in the town of Kennebunk for the second week of our trip. The Kennebunk Inn seemed to meet our needs. I made reservations for 6 nights. This hotel was built in 1799. It wasn't until I looked further on the internet that I found out this hotel is haunted. To us it just made the hotel even more interesting. To our disappointment there were no ghostly appearances during our stay there. On our next to last day the weather forecast called for 100% rain the entire next day. So after lunch I went to Diane at the front desk and told her we would be leaving one day early. She prepared our bill that evening because we planned to leave early the next morning. I told her that I had read that the hotel is haunted. She said that she hadn't personally experienced any unusual happenings, but others have witnessed a few. I told her we were disappointed that nothing unusual happened during our visit. Her comment was Well, you do have one more night. However, nothing happened that last night. Or did it?
The cabinet in our room had 4 drawers which slid open all by themselves periodically after we used them. I had assumed that it was due to the very noticeable slant in the floor which isn't uncommon in very old houses. Surely the drawers would open if we failed to close them completely. On the morning of our departure I started packing the car in the midst of an intermittent drizzle. On my way back and forth to the car I noticed a broken glass on the sidewalk under one of our windows. I left a note at the front desk about the broken glass. Someone returning from a night out had too much to drink and dropped the glass. After leaving the keys at the front desk, we drove off, and that was that. Or was it?
Once we were home I again looked up the websites that discussed the haunted background of the Kennebunk Inn. Here is what I found:
(1) Wine glasses and goblets -- in one incident, a waiter was carrying a tray of wine glasses, when one of the wine glasses rose off the tray, and crashed to the floor, like someone had deliberately thrown it.
(2) Goblets behind the bar have been known to move and actually fly across the room by themselves.
(3) Cyrus, a long deceased desk clerk, suspected of being one of the spirits haunting this hotel used to have his desk in the room that was directly above the unfinished staircase that went from the cellar to the ceiling.
We saw deliveries being made at the rear of the building at the entrance to what seemed to be the cellar. Our room was on the first floor just above this cellar. The broken glass on the sidewalk was just underneath one of our windows. Eleanor's hearing isn't good. But mine is. I heard nothing during the night. However, the window air conditioner could have drowned out the sound. The slanted floor in our room is the logical explanation for the pesky opening-on-their-own drawers. So logically nothing unusual happened during the 5 nights we stayed at the Kennebunk Inn. Or did it?
