TRAVEL VLOG: 9 DAYS IN TAIWAN (Taichung, Taitung, Hualien & Taipei)
Visited Taiwan in July 2017 for 9 days and this time round, we managed to cover quite a few places, and even got to see the Taiwan International Balloon Festival and a free outdoor concert in Hualien!
Getting around Taiwan is pretty easy even if you're backpacking, we got around everywhere mainly on the Taiwan Railway (TRA) across different cities and took the Tourism Shuttle within the city to all the places we went (:

We head back to the mainland and start exploring Taitung. From coastal areas to mountain highs, Taitung greets visitors to a land of ecological richness and scenic beauty. MyInspireProject EP3 – Taiwan, A Home Island to a Wealth of Culture, Sensational Food and Nature
Our new episode is dedicating to our home town, #Taiwan, an island formerly known as Formosa in the 17th century and remains largely undiscovered by Western travelers. But for those who make it here, they are in for a real treat.
Taiwan displays a wealth of culture with an eclectic mix of Chinese, Western, Japanese and indigenous influences. We have invited Taiwanese actor and celebrity TV host, Yi Lee, to explore the #StreetFood Culture with us. And we were also honored to experience the new era of the traditional Puppet Show and Art with Pili International Media and Taiwanese designer Wang Li Ling. The biggest surprise of all, is Taiwan’s nature: from towering mountains, rushing rivers, tropical beaches and sheers cliffs on the coast. With no doubt, Taiwan is one of the most welcoming places on earth, as we encountered numerous acts of generosity and kindness throughout the journey.
Through our story, we would like to share the highlights of the new “#MadeinTaiwan,” and we hope this hidden paradise would attract more adventurous travels from the rest of the world.

INJURED in Kenting and WEDGIE in Taitung | 12 Days in Taiwan EP3
Episode 3 features highs of paragliding and soaring the skies of Taitung with a wedgie and also the lows of being pounded by waves in Kenting while attempting to surf and ALMOST dying (or at least being seriously injured) but regardless of it all we never lost our sense of adventure and we still filled our tummies with delicious food.
Heading south to Kenting and Taitung, there was one mission in mind and that was to explore by doing and in some ways we got more than we bargained for. We combined our stay at Afei's hotel/inn/hostel with delicious meals there and also his personally run surfing trips. While we were brimming with confidence since South Africa, we totally weren't prepared for how hard it was out there with the big waves and challenging conditions. We both came out with injuries. Wanting to do something a little bit more laid back, we eventually got scooters, although that was a mission on its own. In Taitung, we got to realize our dreams of paragliding although even that was very last minute. On our very last day in the city, we borrowed bikes from our hotel and roamed through the city and as usual, managed to find great food places along the way.
Taiwanese re qing was on display again in this travelogue with Sean whom we met at paragliding. He totally didn't have to but he helped us find a cheaper way back home. We also ended up having dinner together at the train station as we waited. His story is actually quite amazing on its own as he was partway through his hike around the entire country with nothing more than his backpack. His determination and strength was a true inspiration.

Papago International Resort
In an online poll conducted this year by the Taiwan travel company EzTravel, this lovely Mediterranean-look resort, located just south of Chishang, was declared “Taiwan’s most beautiful hotel.” Need one say more?
Here’s more. Netizens lauded the quiet surroundings, low-rise architecture that enables sweeping views up and down the lush valley, and the luxurious outdoor-pool complex in the inner courtyard of the three-sided main building, umbrellas and swaying palm trees providing ample shade.
The rooms inside the main building are very spacious; some look over the inner-courtyard pools, some face outward toward the mountains, and all have comfy balconies. Beyond the main building and pool complex is a “village” of luxury villas, in Victorian, Balinese, and Mediterranean style.
There are two high-quality restaurants, one serving Chinese cuisine, the other Chinese/international buffets. An upscale spa complex is located in front of the main building, alfresco in the middle with roofs covering the spa pools along the sides (different temperatures, and such options as a “roselle” mineral-water soak, “milk” soak, etc.). Two of the many other amenities/services of special note are the hotel’s well-stocked bike-rental operation and its daily 1-hour tractor-train tours, during which your guide introduces (in Chinese) the area’s irrigation works, the Taiwan Sugar Chishang Pastoral Farm Resort, and other local spots of interest.

From Travel in Taiwan magazine 2016-05-06:
By Rick Charette
Luanshan is a Bunun-tribe village perched on the lower slopes of Mt. Dulan, a peak in the Coastal Mountain Range’s southern reaches. It looks down over bluffs to the floor of the Beinan River, which flows out to sea at Taitung City, and looks across at the Luye Highland, venue for the annual Taiwan International Balloon Festival. Mt. Dulan is sacred to both the Bunun and the Amis; the west side is traditional Bunun land, and the east side, Dulan village at its base, is traditional Amis land.
The Luanshan Bunun invite outsiders on guided ecology/culture experience tours (a fee is charged) on their lands, referred to as an “open-air forest museum.” Travel in Taiwan chose the forest walk with traditional Bunun feast (9am~2pm; if no feast, the activity ends at noon). On the walk, our guide, dressed in traditional warrior garb, explained the local tribal history, medicinal, dye, and other useful plants, the village’s ongoing forest-protection efforts, and much more. We also visited a magnificent sacred grove of giant banyan trees, some 1,000-plus years young. Before sitting down to what was truly a chief’s feast we were regaled with songs of greeting, plus harvest, hunting, and courting songs, and given an archery lesson using traditional-style bows.

Michella Jade Weng, Presenter:
Hi. We're in Taitung today and we're about to visit a walking tree. But we must stay quiet. Otherwise, it might run away.
But first, we need to pay respect to the resident deities. The man making bamboo cups for the rice liquor that we've brought is Aliman, the director of this forest museum.
Aliman, Forest Museum Director:
After a ritual like this, we get receive their blessing and the OK to proceed.
Wow!
Amazing huh?
Looks like a dozen or more trees!
One tree.
Aliman, Forest Museum Director:
This is a white bark banyan. But people in our tribe call it the walking tree. When we're marking land, there's a tree here, a rock there, so we say, over here this is yours, over there is Aliman's. But after a while, the original tree might be torn apart by typhoons or earthquakes and the center of the tree moves to the left or right.
You can even climb some of these trees. But first let's head further into the forest where Bunung tribesmen used to hunt.
Aliman, Forest Museum Director:
This is where we hunters used to sleep. The forest is our refrigerator, our pantry. Our entire life is related to it. Now everyone's modernized and has forgotten the relationship we have with the forest. So when people come here, they come to learn and we treat them like our friends and we learn together.
Feels like a scene out of Tomb Raider, doesn't it?

There are lots of places to visit in Taitung, and if you don't want to bother with driving, you can come by train, then make use of the sightseeing bus, which will take you to the walking tree, to Luye and all the other fun places in between.
This guy with the long hair, thick glasses and flipflops is Adu. He is actually one of the best storytellers in Luye. He'll take you cycling and show you how to get up close and personal with the land, literally. He's already convinced more than 200,000 visitors to lie down on this road.
Adu, Luye Storyteller:
Sleep. Go to sleep. Just don't sleep until it's dark. Then the people picking you up will be the paramedics.
Let's look behind us. Doesn't it look like a lake in the sky?
With each travel experience usually comes a pleasant surprise and a new understanding of things. Luye's not the most famous of places, but through silly little activities like lying on the road and looking at things upside down, it's surprsingly lovely. And the people here - I've found them to be part of the reason why I'd like to come again.
