Narrowboat Gloucester & Sharpness Canal & Railway Disaster
We've navigated to the end of the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal to the Sharpness Docks. I discover what's at the end of the canal and see the remains of the Severn Railway Bridge devastated in the 1960's by barges crashing into it's supporting columns. I walk along the longest village green in England, which is a true example of picture postcard English village. I also discuss the bad sides of the canal including the bobbing up and down and the rude rowers.

Please note I said the pump out was south of Purton Upon Bridge, I meant to say Purton Lower Bridge, sorry about that!

UK Steam Perrygrove Coleford Forest of Dean
Steam trains wind their way along a ¾ mile track through farmland and woods. There are 4 stations each with paths to walk through the ancient Perrygrove Wood on the edge of the Forest of Dean.
A trip takes just over 20 minutes but most passengers get off to go to the covered picnic and play area at Foxy Hollow and return by a later train. There is no charge for extra rides -- your ticket lasts all day and you can ride the steam train as many times as you like!
The railway is 15 inch gauge (381mm) and steam engines are used to pull almost all the trains. Phone 01594 834991
THE WELSH SEASIDE - Harlech
Some 10 miles north of Barmouth, Harlech has a wonderful beach that sweeps around Tremadog Bay. The beach has fine sand dunes and a backdrop of Snowdonian mountains. Looking seawards to the NW you can follow the coastline towards the Lleyn Peninsula and imagine the fine days you could have there also
There is something of a disconnect between the beach and the town, seeing as there is an upwards trek to be made between the two. The town of just under 1500 people has more of a feel of a sleepy village. What road traffic there is up and down the coast doesn't pass through the town unless a detour is made
There is a fine castle - well-preserved with with an interesting history. So much so it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle is easily picked out from a distant where line of sight is possible
The Cambrian Coast railway station is nearby. Trains going NW and S usually pass each other here every 2 hours

Gwili Railway, Carmarthenshire (getting up steam since 1961)
Featured in Keira Knightley's film 'The Edge of Love', Gwili Steam Railway is a great piece of history near our Carmarthenshire Holiday Cottages. (qualitycottages.co.uk/carmarthenshire/holiday-cottages-carmarthenshire)
Polly, our roving reporter met with Jeremy, one of the team of incredible volunteers who preserve this standard gauge railway. Jeremys' enthusiasm is infectious. Whether a steam railway fan or not, we are sure his cheerful narrative will draw visitors to its platforms from our holiday cottages in Carmarthenshire.
Quality Cottages short films aim to show those holidaying in Wales the unique things to see and great people to meet. We wish to show the story behind an attraction to add an extra flavour to a visit.
Preservation of this piece of history and the passion for Gwili railway is abundantly clear in Jerermys' narrative.
That's the thing about Wales really, we talk until the cows come home (..) we're very sociable people
The track starts at Bronwydd (near Carmarthen) in South Wales, and travels along a short section of the former Carmarthen to Aberystwyth railway line. A steep climb out of Bronwydd village, travels through open fields and wooded hills, hugging the River Gwili all the while. A round trip takes about an hour. You can travel on the train all day for the price of one ticket. There are even opportunities to take a ride on a miniature railway and make use of a beautiful and tranquil picnic spot beside the river. Dogs are allowed to travel on the floor of the train. Round off your trip with a visit to the museum, well stocked shop, station building, signal box and the Gwili Tea Room.
The railways first arrived in Carmarthen in 1860 and can you imagine how people must have felt in those days. I suppose today it would be the equivalent of someone landing from the moon. Says Jeremy.
If you would like to blow off some steam on the Gwili Steam Railway book a Carmarthenshire holiday cottage qualitycottages.co.uk/carmarthenshire/holiday-cottages-carmarthenshire.php
