On Abruzzo's southern coast, the hilltop town of Vasto has an atmospheric medieval quarter and superb sea views. Much of the centro storico (historic centre) dates from the 15th century, a period in which the city was known as 'the Athens of the Abruzzi'; it's also distinguished as the birthplace of the poet Gabriele Rossetti. Two kilometres downhill is the blowzy resort of Vasto Marina, a strip of hotels, restaurants and campgrounds fronting a long sandy beach. About 5km north of town along the coast is the beautiful Spiaggia di Punta Penna and the Riserva Naturale di Punta Aderci.
In summer the action is on the beach at Vasto Marina. In the old town, interest revolves around the small historic centre, with its landmark Castello Caldoresco, located on Piazza Rossetti, and the low-key Romanesque Cattedrale di San Giuseppe. The Renaissance Palazzo d'Avalos hosts four museums, including the Museo Archeologico. The first thing you will appreciate on arriving in Vasto are the beautiful panoramic views over the Adriatic sea, over the lovely golden beaches and towards the Punta della Penne harbour and lighthouse.
Above the sea, on a hillside, Vasto has a charming medieval old centre whose centre is the marvellous Piazza Rossetti with the impressive Caldoresco Castle. The original parts of the castle date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. The Palazzo d'Avalos is another key sight. You can visit the palace as it is now home to the Museo Civico Archaeologica. Be sure to also visit its pretty Neapolitan-style garden. Not far away is the Cattedrale di San Giuseppe which has a simple Romanesque facade. The rest is newer as it was rebuilt following destruction during a Turkish raid in the 16th century.
Wandering through the narrow alleyways is a pleasure (and offers some relief from the hot sun) and reveals many churches and mansions and also various Roman excavations. After exploring the old centre head for the beach. It is about a 15 to 20 minutes walk downhill from the ancient centre of Vasto and is a welcome spot to cool off in the gorgeous turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea.
On the coast the Vasto Marina is a popular holiday destination and has lots of hotels and camp sites along the edge of the beach. This is a nice spot to enjoy lunch or to have the almost obligatory afternoon ice-cream. Whilst thronging with people in July and August the marina and beaches are fairly deserted outside of the main season.
Further along the coast is the promontory of the 'Punta d'Erca also known as the Punta Aderci, a beautiful, unspoilt area of rocky coastline popular with divers. The area is a protected nature reserve. You can see the wonderful 'trabocchi' here. These are traditional fishing platforms used for fish and prawn fishing along the coast. Outside of the main season you can enjoy the coastline and trabocchi and barely see another person.
The old part of the town (centro storico) features a number of buildings and churches dating from the 12th-18th centuries, including:
Vasto Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Giuseppe)
Church of Santa Maria Maggiore (it), the largest and oldest (mentioned in a document as early as 1195) church in the town, with a quite tall bell tower. Damaged by the Turks in 1566, and by a fire in 1645, it received a thorough restructuring in 1735 in which it got the current shape. It hosts one of alleged Jesus' crown of thorns (Sacra Spina).
Castello Caldoresco
D'Avalos Palace (Palazzo D'Avalos) and the Musei Civici
Below the hill on which the town is located, the beach resort town of Marina di Vasto offers a large sandy beach and several hotels and other facilities.

Italians are big fans of the seaside, escaping to local beaches for the day or often returning to the same resort town year after year for an extended holiday.
That said, with a few exceptions, Italy does not have a surfeit of glorious beaches. Nor is it particularly well served by the UK’s traditional big sun and sea tour operators, at least when compared with Spain, Greece or Turkey. But you can still have a great time on the Italian coast.

Where it can hold its own is Sardinia, which has some of the best beaches in Europe, never mind Italy. This makes it more than usually popular with Italians (and Germans and Scandinavians), so book Sardinian beach holidays, as well as any flights or ferries, well in advance.

Even for mainland Italians, Sardinia is a world apart, so it is worth seeking guidance from a specialist such as Sardatur (see “Tour operators”). Choose between small, boutique and luxury hotels on tiny bays, with sickles of white sand, or chic, family- and couple-friendly resorts with activities, such Forte Village, Chia Laguna, Le Dune, Romazzino and the Flamingo.
Hill-town Taormina is the island’s best-known resort. It is attractive, but expensive, and has relatively poor beaches on the coast immediately below the town. Cefalù is a pleasing resort town with a fine historic core. The south coast has many empty beaches, notably at Eraclea Minoa (plus Camerina, Donnalucata, and Punta Secca), but is a rather flat, lifeless shore. Key emerging destinations are the smaller islands, particularly Pantelleria and the Egadi and Aeolian archipelagos.
After Sardinia, many Italians plump for the Adriatic coast, lined for most of its length south of Ravenna with good sand, safe seas and unpretentious small-town resorts. If you want a gentle, Italian family-style seaside holiday, this is the place. Just avoid Rimini, a big and sometimes brash resort. Beaches near Monte Conero, near Ancona, are standouts.
Puglia, too, the “heel” of Italy’s “boot”, has a decent but often rocky coastline. While the Gargano peninsula is busy, the almost Greek-looking Salentino peninsula is quieter, with especially good beaches around Gallipoli and south of Otranto.
