Matalascañas is the name of a beach and resort within the Municipality of Almonte, Huelva Province, in southern Spain. It is known for having an ancient upside down tower on the sand called Torre la Higuera, one of the seven defense towers built by Phillip II in the 16th century to protect the coast from incursions by Turkish and North African corsairs. This locale was still called by the tower's name until the 1970s. The Matalascañas coast line is surrounded by Doñana National Park , and was segregated from it in 1961 to allow the development of a beach-side tourist village. Doñana National Park is a natural reserve in Andalusia, southern Spain, in the provinces of Huelva , Cádiz and Seville. It covers 543 km2 , of which 135 km2 are a protected area. The park is an area of marshes, shallow streams, and sand dunes in Las Marismas, the delta where the Guadalquivir River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. It was established as a nature reserve in 1969 when the World Wildlife Fund joined with the Spanish government and purchased a section of marshes to protect it. The eco-system has been under constant threat by the draining of the marshes, the use of river water to boost agricultural production by irrigating land along the coast, water pollution by upriver mining, and the expansion of tourist facilities. Playa de la Barrosa is a 6 kilometres long beach in the municipality of Chiclana de la Frontera, Province of Cádiz, Spain. It was the site of the Battle of Barrosa in 1811. it is separated from the Playa de Sancti Petri by a cliff. The resort of Novo Sancti Petri lies at the south end of Playa de la Barrosa and contains a defensive tower structure called Torre Bermeja. Several pieces of music have been composed about the beach including Isaac Albéniz's Torre Bermeja and Paco de Lucía's La Barrosa.

Coto de Doñana

Coto de Doñana (auch Parque Nacional de Doñana) an der Costa de la Luz in Andalusien ist heute, nach der Erweiterung 2004, 54.252 Hektar groß, dazu kommen noch einmal 26.540 Hektar als Pufferzone (preparque). Er ist Spaniens wichtigstes Feuchtgebiet. Dies liegt vor allem an den marismas; einem flachen, periodisch überschwemmten Feuchtgebiet. Die Coto de Doñana ist nicht nur eine einzigartige Landschaft, die Fauna ist ebenso vielfältig. Neben der Überwinterung tausender Zugvögel leben seltene Vogelarten in den Feuchtgebieten. Das Gebiet ist bekannt für die zweitgrößte Population des stark bedrohten Pardelluchses. Der Nationalpark ist Teil des Natura 2000-Gebiets „Doñana“.
