Santorini island is a top travel destination for a reason: the amazing scenery, the towns along the clifftop rim of the caldera, the architecture of the popular sugarcube towns (Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia where you will find the iconic whitewashed houses and blue domed churches, all real, not just a snapshot in a card postal), the beautiful villages (don’t miss Pyrgos and if you have time add Megalochori at your itinerary, we also checked Ekso Gonia and Mesaria), seaside towns of Kamari and Perissa (yes there are no sandy beaches but the east coast has the long Black beach and if you drive down to Akrotiri don’t miss the Red beach, ok no one goes to Santorini for the beaches of course but at least you have some alternatives to the pools), countless vineyards and wineries where you can try local wines, impressive historic sites (Akrotiri excavations are a must but also the ruins of Ancient Thera on the rock above Kamari).
And of course the famous sunset, most people go to Oia for this but have in mind many others will be there with you, if you have extra days try to see the sunset from many different spots or towns along the clifftop rim. The most romantic was down at the southern part of the island in front the lighthouse where only 10 other couple were there with us while the previous day more than 1000 were trying to get selfies in Oia…
This time we stayed at the east coast where you can admire the sunrise and not the sunset... but in the evening we were just visiting the west coast for the sunset ;)
But Santorini is the most expensive greek island. You can still save the bank with some planning, skip taxis and use local transport, book a room away from the caldera, eat some souvlaki and not only in glamourous restaurants, and use common sense (eg.buy the combo ticket for attractions which is 14e and includes Akrotiri, Ancient Thera and 4 museums while Akrotiri costs 12e on its own…)
Let’s be honest you need at last 2-3 full days… Have in mind it’s not a party island (use Mykonos for this) so big groups of friends may get bored after the second sunset :)
Last but not least I have to admit that we usually avoid the greek islands during high season, in Santorini 6000 people may arrived in one day because of the cruise ships, add to that the hordes that arrive with local ferries and you get the picture (chaotic, traffic on every road, packed parking lots, ridiculously expensive hotel rooms, bad service). That’s why we traveled there in May 2016, everyone was still calm and not rude, restaurants open but half empty (so service was good and friendly), hotel prices at 30-40% of the august prices, we never had problem with parking (Fira’s main street was jammed as usual) or anything else apart for the ferry strike that kept us there for two extra days (how nice to get trapped in paradise, no?) so we had 6 in total and still we didn’t get bored (although I’ve been there twice in the past) as we explored every possible corner :)
Travel time from Piraeus to Santorini usually takes 9 hours. This precious 9 hours gives you enough time to enjoy the immense blue Aegean Sea and bask on the picturesque view of the islands...
Santorini Travel - 2017
Santorini is a volcanic island in the Cyclades group of the Greek islands. It is located between Ios and Anafi islands. It is famous for dramatic views, stunning sunsets from Oia town, the strange white aubergine (eggplant), the town of Thira and naturally its very own active volcano. There are naturally fantastic beaches such as the beach of Perissa, maybe the best beach in Santorini, the black pebble beach of Kamari, white beach and red beach.
An official Santorini travel guidebook is available.
There are several villages and towns on Santorini Island, four of which are perched along the top of the crescent-shaped cliff of the caldera.
Fira - the main stunning cliff-perched town, featuring all that Oia has, but much more overcrowded.
Karterados - 2km south of Fira. Here you can find the traditional Santorini architecture
Kamari - black pebble beach. Has stunning views of Sunrise.
Firostefani - just 10 minutes walking distance from Fira, offering unique views of the volcano and sunset from it cliff-perched site.
Imerovigli - small resort town perched on the cliff a short bus ride away from Fira. Has absolutely stunning views of the sunset (all the way down to the horizon) and of Oia.
Oia Sunset 3
Oia or Ia - for unforgettable sunsets, probably the most charming cliff-perched place on the island.
Pyrgos - highest point on the island; picturesque monastery and streets, can compete with Oia.
Perissa - Nice, well-organized beaches and good Greek fish taverns.
Megalochori -Traditional village with a lot of old white cycladic churches.
Akrotiri -Visit the archaeological site of Aktotiri. Stunning history.
Akrotiri-Visit the Venetian Castle and on the top with amazing views the tower La Ponta- Greek Bagpipe exhibition workshop-Daily music!]]
Mesaria - The centre of the island. There is a small market on the road every morning with fresh fish. Do not miss the Argiros Estate to see a 19th century house fully rebuilt.
Monolithos- Nice beach and a few good taverns. Very good for children, as the water is shallow.
Vlichada - a small village and a beach.
Vothonas - a small rock village, the church of St. Ann is here. Architecturally it is the strangest village on the island, as all the buildings were cut from the ravine that it is in.
Also there's Thirasia, a village on the nearby island with the same name--visited by fewer tourists. There are daily excursions to the Kameni (volcano) Island which also reach Thirasia island.
The BEST of SCHINOUSSA, a posh greek island ~ Σχοινούσα!
Schoinoussa or Schinoussa is an island in the Cyclades, Greece. It lies south of the island of Naxos, in the Lesser Cyclades group, between the island communities of Irakleia and Koufonisia.

The island has three settlements, Chora the capital of the island, Mesaria and Mersini where is the port of the island. The derivation of the name Schinoussa is not precisely known. It is believed that the name either derives from the corruption of the ancient name Echinousa or from a Venetian nobleman named Schinoza. Schoinoussa has been inhabited since antiquity. On the island there are sites of archaeological interest including ancient Greek and Roman ruins, ruins of a Byzantine church and a small medieval castle. From the 11th century the island was the property of the Hozoviotissa Monastery on the nearby island of Amorgos.
This island is perfect for calm, alternative vacations. The wild landscape, the isolate beaches and the relaxing atmosphere captivate visitors and creates a perfect place for total privacy. Tourist facilities are few in Schinoussa but enough to cater for the limited number of visitors. The beaches are crystal and are mostly accessible on foot. Visitors can go for short holidays in Schinoussa or as a day trip from Naxos and Amorgos with local ferry. Some lucky people that they visit the beach during April or Octomber and November can enjoy privacy, as they will be so alone there that could practically may have outdoors sex without anyone noticing!
What to do on Schinoussa
The Chora
Built on a hill as a defense against pirate attack, it is hard to spot at first but once you arrive there, you can enjoy its commanding views across the Aegean. Visit the “Isodia tis Theotokou”, where the icon of “Panagia tis Akathis” – an icon of the Holy Virgin – is kept. In the evening, in the café of the main paved street there are impromptu feasts to the accompaniment of violin and lute and an abundance of food, ideally washed down by “raki”, a homemade brew which really packs a punch after a couple of glasses. And make sure to try the local fava – a kind of chick pea dip – that has won many awards!
Mesaria
The small hamlet with its two windmills and the “Evaggelistria” church with the colourful icon screen makes a fascinating afternoon’s excursion.
Abseiling
In the gorge of Harakas there are abseiling excursions organized for the lovers of the sport, who can enjoy the natural beauty and the view to Tsigouri and Fidou.
Boat trips
Either in your own boat or by sea taxi you can circumnavigate the island, naturally with stops for a swim at beaches of unique natural beauty that are difficult to access on foot, such as Gerolimionas and Sifneiko. Or if the fancy takes you, there is always a short trip to the other islands of the Small Cyclades.
