Capbreton is a commune in the Landes department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. Located at the mouth of the Boudigau and Bourret rivers, the town is situated about 40 km north of Biarritz. Capbreton is north of Bayonne and Biarritz in south-west France at the point where the river Adour ends it’s passage to the sea. If you love seafood this is unquestionably one of the best places to visit in France. It’s income has traditionally been netted from the fruits of the sea, and it is recognised as one of the best places to eat fresh fish and seafood.
perhaps it’s the Gauf, a deep water crevice extending to over 1000 meters below sea level or just the fresh ocean current that delivers this exotic mix of sea fruit, but ultimately for me it’s the freshness of the produce and the skills of the restaurants that cook and serve it. It’s superb, and a plate of 'fruit de mer' (seafood) is a brilliant reminder of your visit.
Nowadays, Capbreton is set up for the tourist market, but not like Newquay or Brighton… yes, there are surf shops, designer labels and sunglasses and yes of course you can buy buckets, fishing nets and coral jewellery, but the focus is on the sea, the waves, the sunsets, the brilliant weather and the lifestyle that calls itself.
It’s where the French go on holiday and it’s a well kept secret, lapped by the channel. The area is clean and unspoilt with a timeless charm. For the children there are miles upon miles of sandy beaches, though watch out for the strong current. There are ice-cream shops that sell every flavour you could imagine, there are rock-pools with the opportunity to net your own oysters, and of course there’s the sand… and there’s lots of it.
Capbreton is divided into two parts. To the north, there is the port centre, with your usual suspects… the Surf Shacks and the bucket and spade vendors, sandwiches that cost the earth and well meaning restaurants serving this mornings catch at overinflated prices. You’ll find obstacle courses for fitness enthusiasts, playgrounds for the under 10’s and hairdressers and boutiques for the glamorous that shop. Continue passed these and you’ll find a quaint harbour beach where you can revisit your childhood, finding treasures in the rock pools and shoals of miniature fry ready to be snapped up by your infants. You’ll discover crabs of every colour and pick fresh oysters from the rocks if no one beats you to it! It’s the place of childhood dreams as you play pirate on the jetty and scrape the sand from your toes.
Slightly downstream, and usually after lunch, you can visit the Grand Plage. This is a luxuriously long beach with the odd parasol but not a wind break in sight, not a German towel, and no loud music and no rubbish! You have the choice of joining the throngs of French tourists, or walking further along the beach to find a deserted spot. The beach at Cap Breton is one of the cleanest in Europe, the sea is like a clear jewel, and the surf is great. Edged by a surprisingly tasteful block of tourist apartments, there are no high rise buildings, parking is a nightmare and the ocean current can be dangerous, so don’t let your children in alone.

Mimizan-Plage, 1ère station balnéaire des Landes
Première station balnéaire créée dans les Landes à la fin du 19° siècle. Mimizan les Bains (son nom à l'époque) a séduit et attiré nombre de personnalités qui y ont séjourné : Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel, Salvador Dali, Charlie Chaplin et bien d'autres encore. Le Duc de Westminster y a construit le château de Woolsack en 1911 qui existe toujours aujourd'hui. De nos jours, cette station balnéaire a gardé tous ses charmes : une nature omiprésente et protégée, une tranquilité permettant de se ressourcer.

L'environnement est totalement désertique. La forêt de pins occupe près de 90 % de la superficie de ce petit village de 735 habitants. La plage de Lespecier (commune de Mimizan), surveillée en saison, se caractérise par son aspect très authentique de côte sauvage, vierge de toute construction.
Les étendues de sable fin de Mimizan Plage lui ont valu le surnom de « Perle de la Côte d’Argent » lorsque le poète Maurice Martin y fait escale avec sa caravane en 1905.
Mimizan s’étend sur la rive sud ouest du lac, au bord duquel sont implantés des hébergements touristiques, des structures d’activités nautiques, de pleine nature parcours de golf 9 trous par 22 homologué FFG, mais également le château de Woolsack, pavillon de chasse de style Tudor construit pour le Duc de Westminster dans les années 1910, et qui accueillit dans son cadre paisible des personnalités fameuses telles que Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel ou encore Salvador Dali.
Sandwiched between the forests and the sea, located at the riverfront only steps away from the beach, and opening in 2018: The Single Fin Hotel & Lodge. Laid-back, beachy and tasteful, it has it all. The hotel is run by a French couple. Arnaud grew up in this hotel ran by his father and after traveling all over the world to find the best surf, he and his wife Aurelie settled here with their daughter Mila.
Arnaud & Aurelie also run the superb tapas & wine bar in Mimizan.

Beaches and surfing — not to mention a wonderfully mild climate— are at the heart of Biarritz‘s enduring appeal as a holiday resort. Its ideal location in the Bay of Biscay on France’s Atlantic coast means that Biarritz has become the surfing capital of Europe. But even for those who want a less strenuous time at the seaside, the beaches offer a great place to relax, take a dip or simply soak up the rays. Biarritz’s six beaches offer plenty of variety. Some are perfect for swimming or surfing, others are ideal for families with small children. Here’s our guide to help you choose the right beach for you and your family. And don’t for get to check on the tides before you visit the beach!
The central beach close to the town centre is the Grande Plage (the name means ‘Big Beach’ or ‘Main Beach’). This is the beach shown most often in photos of Biarritz and where the famous and not-so-famous come to bathe, relax and pose in the heart of this resort. But thanks to the large waves that roll in from the Atlantic Ocean, it is also viewed as one of the finest surfing beaches in Europe. The waves can be huge! The Grande Plage runs between the famous Casino on the seafront to the even more famous Hotel du Palais.
The Miramar beach is really a continuation of the Grande Plage after the Hotel du Palais — perhaps less popular with the glitterati because it’s a bit further to walk! Surfing is not allowed here though bodyboarding is.
The Port Beach is south of the Grande Plage, and as its name suggests it’s right next to the Port Vieux or Old Port in Biarritz. This small beach is set in a rocky cove which shelters it from the wind and large waves. This means it is not great for surfing — but is very good for people with young children. This is definitely a family-friendly beach.
The Côte des Basques beach is just south of the Port Vieux beach but could hardly be more different. While Port Vieux beach is small and intimate, the Plage Côte des Basques beach (literally ‘Basque coast beach’) is very long, open and a surfing paradise. In many ways out of all the Biarritz beaches this is THE surfing beach, and is where surfing in France all started.
Marbella Beach is essentially a continuation of the Côte des Basques beach. It’s an attractive beach and has a slightly wilder feel than some of the neighbouring stretches of sand The setting and waves make it good for surfers and beachborders, though because of the difficult access down steps and across rocks it is not ideal for people with limited mobility.
This is a large beach which is especially popular with locals — perhaps because it’s usually less crowded than some of the others and the fact that there’s plenty of free car parking nearby. There’s also a lovely walk around the beach and a play area for children, plus a café. All in all it’s a great beach and one of the Biarritz beaches that’s often overlooked by tourists.
