3D fantasies come to life at street art festival
(31 May 2016) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4037927
LEAD IN:
Bright, bold and vivid 3D fantasies are coming to life at an out-of-this-world street festival in the Bulgarian village of Mogilovo.
Artists from across Europe are demonstrating their ability to make drawings seemingly leap from their canvasses.
STORY-LINE:
The streets of Bulgaria are taking on a life of their own at this street art festival in Mogilovo, around 200 kilometres east of capital, Sofia.
This group of artists from around the globe is busy sketching, rubbing and painting colourful chalk on various pavements and walls.
They've spent several days creating these mind-bending images of dolphins, dolls, sleeping beauties and surreal 3D images.
Their works will remain untouched for months so several visitors can enjoy them.
It's thought to be the first 3D street art festival ever to be held in Bulgaria.
I like this art form a lot because we really interact with the public, says German 3D artist, Frederike Wouters.
We make it possible that people in their everyday life suddenly make contact with art and this is always a very nice surprise for them.
It's thought street painting dates back to the Italian Renaissance during the 16th century, when skilled painters specialised in life-size portraits of the Madonna and child.
These days, street painting has taken on a new three-dimensional life of its own.
Italian 3D street painter, Tony Cuboliquido, says it's as much about interacting with your audience as the art you create.
This kind of painting is a painting of entertainment for the people and when you are on the street it's not important what you are painting, but how you paint, he says.
How you interact with the people, with your audience.
The biggest fans of these paintings here - just like elsewhere in the world - are children, who are enjoying seeing their fantasies come to life.
I like the moment when children see and say; Ah, it's a dolphin. I like this surprise, when (they) see (a) big toy that is painted, it's good, says Mexican 3D painter, Roberto Rodriguez.
Unlike traditional paintings which usually outlive their creators, these street creations have a limited life span. Even a short spell of rain could wash them away.
Dutch artist, Leon Keer, knows his drawings are temporary, but so is life, he says.
I've been working on the streets for like 20 years now, he says.
I started up with doing this kind of painting, it's called anamorphic. I started up in 2007, so I am almost ten years experienced with this technique and it is still evolving for me in that matter, because you will learn everyday new kinds of anamorphic techniques with it.
Mogilovo's 3D street art festival ran 24 - 29 May.

Art world bursts from galleries in 2016 ++REPLAY++
(28 Dec 2016) LEAD IN:
Winter light shows, market place galleries and ancient rock art. In 2016, the art world burst from galleries and began appearing everywhere.
While art fans in the United States got a chance to spend a night in Van Gogh's bedroom, artists in London began exploring art in a new reality.
STORY-LINE:
While grey is the colour typically predicted during the UK's winter months, the year began with a London festival which tried to remind tourists and residents of warmer hues.
Dozens of light installations were set up across the city, with artists from around the world using their creative spark to turn buildings, squares and streets into dazzling artworks.
Lumiere London included 30 artists painting the town not just red, but all the colours of the rainbow.
In late January, artists inspired by gardens and how nature is tamed by humans were central themes at a major new exhibit in London.
Masterpieces from Monet to Matisse revealed the artists' love affair with nature's colour and light, as a means of expression.
In February, a Zambian artist was calling for more protection of his country's ancient rock art.
Dating back 12,000 years, several rock art sites in Zambia had been damaged by thieves looking to make money from selling segments of the ancient, precious stonework.
Artist Zenzele Chulu got many of his ideas from the country's extensive rock art.
Prostitution was the theme of a major art exhibit opening at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum.
Artists including Van Gogh, Degas, Picasso and Munch were all inspired to paint women working as prostitutes in Paris.
In February, art lovers could spend a night in a replica of Vincent Van Gogh's bedroom for just $10 US dollars.
The Art Institute of Chicago decorated a one-bedroom apartment to look just like the artist's famous painting - and was renting it out to visitors.
The room in Chicago's River North neighbourhood was listed on Airbnb, as if the artist himself were renting it out.
The idea of staying in his bedroom, where he slept, where he painted is very, very moving, says curator Gloria Groom.
And, I think, for a lot of people they want to experience that.
In March, near-daily unrest had scared many visitors away from Jerusalem's main market, Mahane Yehuda.
So a graffiti artist duo attempted to revitalise the area through an array of portraits drawn on store shutters.
Domestic violence, state executions and political struggle were just some of the themes explored by over 500 emerging and established artists at Art Dubai 2016.
In its 10th edition, the fair was bigger than ever with 94 galleries from 40 different countries.
In May, a Bosnian artist was creating detailed sculptures no bigger than the tip of a pencil.
The 32-year-old, self-taught artist Jasenko Djordjevic's carved the soft graphite tips of pencils into miniature sculptures using simple tools, such as surgical needles and a scalpel.
In London, a gallery opened by British artist Damien Hirst unveiled a new exhibit dedicated to the big, bold and bright works of American artist Jeff Koons.
Widely considered to be one of the most significant artists to have emerged in the postwar era, Koons is famed for his childlike, inflatable-style sculptures.
Bright, bold and vivid 3D fantasies were coming to life at an out-of-this-world street festival in the Bulgarian village of Mogilovo.
Artists from across Europe were demonstrating their ability to make drawings seemingly leap from their canvasses.
In June, 'Art Basel Unlimited', one of the world's premier contemporary art fairs, opened in Switzerland.
The focus was on big art - oversized sculptures, huge pictures and massive installations.
The art market had been booming, with prices for contemporary art increasing year on year.
