Loughborough is a town in the Charnwood borough of Leicestershire, England. Loughborough is the seat of Charnwood Borough Council and home to Loughborough University. Loughborough is close to the Nottinghamshire border and is within a short distance of locations such as Nottingham, the East Midlands Airport and Derby.
Loughborough has the world's largest bell foundry — John Taylor Bellfounders, which made the bells for the Carillon war memorial, a landmark within the Queens Park in the town, Great Paul for St Paul's Cathedral, and York Minster. The first mention of Loughborough is in the 1086 Domesday Book. Loughborough's local weekly newspaper is the Loughborough Echo. The town of Loughborough is also served by Leicestershire's daily newspaper, the Leicester Mercury.
Loughborough railway station is the mainline national station serving the town. Network Rail has recently redeveloped the station, increasing the length of platforms and improving access. The local council has made concurrent improvements to the surrounding area. The M1's Junction 23 lies just to the west of Loughborough. The River Soar passes by to the east of the town. Navigation from Loughborough north towards the Trent was achieved in 1778 by the Loughborough Navigation, which terminates at Loughborough Wharf between Derby Road and Bridge Street.

The town was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, having a population of just 50. An ancient Saxon village had sprung up in the Old Harlow area by the 12th Century, based around the hill at Mulberry Green. After the Norman Conquest the area became populated by both Normans and Saxons, with a number of Norman manor houses, including Mark Hall being founded. There is also evidence that markets had been held in the village long before the 12th Century, with the Harlow Bush Fair appearing in ancient manuscripts. There are several ancient buildings surviving in the town, including Harlow Mil, a water mill which has been in operation in some capacity since before 1000 AD; as well as several Grade I listed buildings.
For most of its existence the village of Harlow was little more than a charming stopping point on the road between Cambridge and London. The original village was expanded after the Second World War to provide modern, secure housing for the thousands of Londoners displaced by the Blitz.

TORNADO IS TURNED TO FACE NORTH ON THE SEVERN VALLEY RAILWAY
It seems to be SVR policy for big engines to face south except for short periods, galas for instance. Tornado had followed this doctrine during much of its visit so it was a very pleasant surprise to find that it had been turned for the last week in October. This necessitated a swift replanning of my locations. Eardington Halt remained as I work there on Thursdays but for the second run north I chose Haye Bridge to take advantage of the evening light. I was not disappointed.

Welcome to the Great Central Railway
The Great Central Railway is an award winning heritage railway in the East Midlands, running between Loughborough and Leicester North. We run steam and diesel hauled trains along a mostly double track railway. Ride on our trains, visit our stations and tea rooms, dine in style on board the train, or even take the controls yourself. This film introduces you to the railway, a few of its volunteers and staff and tells you everything we have to offer. Created for the brand new GCR website in 2012, we look forward to your visit.
