North Maluku is a province of Indonesia. It covers the northern part of the Maluku Islands. The provincial capital is Sofifi, on Halmahera, and the largest population center is the island of Ternate. The Maluku Islands was formerly administered as a single province, however, in 1999 it was split into two provinces, with North Maluku being created out of the northern section of the province of Maluku.

    Fort Kalamata is a coastal star fort that was built by the Portuguese on the island of Ternate in Indonesia's Maluku Islands. Formerly known as Benteng Kayu Merah , it was first built in 1540 in support of Portuguese efforts to monopolise the lucrative clove trade and to entrench their dominance over other European powers. It was rebuilt by the Dutch in 1610 who became the dominant power in Maluku.It is located at the south eastern corner of the island 1 km south of Bastiong on the edge of the water. It is now open to the public.

    Hiri is a small, 3-kilometre-wide forested island immediately north of the island of Ternate, in the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. It is located at the northernmost part of a chain of volcanic islands off the western coast of Halmahera. It is a conical volcano which rises to 630 m . Its dominant neighbour to the south is the more active volcano of Mount Gamalama , on Ternate island. This island was used by Z Special Unit , the mainly Australian special operations group active in this area during World War II, on April 9–10, 1945, to take the then Sultan of Ternate, Iskander Muhammad Jabir Syah, to safety from the occupying Japanese forces. The Sultan and his family were rowed at night from Ternate across to Hiri Island, where Z Force protected them from the Japanese troops the next day. H...
