The World’s SHORTEST Flight….FAILED
I traveled to Kirkwall in Scotland to try to fly on the World’s Shortest scheduled passenger flight between Westray and Papa Westray. Flights on the route are scheduled for one and a half minutes with actual flying time is closer to one minute. The record was set at 53 seconds.
After a few amazing inter island flights on LoganAir Britten-Norman Islander the day before, I had a dramatic change in the weather and suffered a set back.
Throughout my inter-island flights, I’ve learnt these flights are crucial to support the remote community in Scotland. I also traveled on Logan Air Saab-2000, the world’s fastest turboprop from Aberdeen to Kirkwall.

Join me for an exciting look into the short flights between the different constituent islands of the Orkney Islands in Northern Scotland. These island hopping flights are a real lifeline service for the inhabitants of these tiny Scottish islands and are subsidised by the British government to ensure that residents of the islands are not dependent upon a ferry service which only operates once a week and is vulnerable to being cancelled due to the frequent bad weather which plagues the area.
It’s a real treat to be able to meet the local pilots who make it all possible and to hear from passengers about how much these flight services mean to them. Some of the Orkney islands have less than 100 inhabitants, but these essential flight services ensure that these small communities and their unique culture can continue well into the future.
I start in Aberdeen International airport, from where I travel to Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkney islands. The flight is operated by Loganair and takes 25 minutes to complete at an altitude of 14,000 feet. At the last minute, there is a pleasant surprise when the flight is seemingly upgraded from the Saab 340 to the Saab 2000 aeroplane. The difference between these two is very noticeable indeed with the former being far less powerful with only 1750 shaft horsepower in each engine whereas the Saab 2000 has a huge 4100 shaft horsepower on either side which incidentally makes the Saab 2000 the world’s fastest turboprop passenger aeroplane. The Saab 2000 is also much more comfortable – despite the small size of the aeroplane, there is surprisingly more leg room with each individual seat than you would find with the likes of the Boeing 737 or the Airbus A320 – brilliant!
Upon arriving at Kirkwall, I meet a senior pilot who has been flying these short flights between the Orkney islands for years and he outlines the tour of the Orkney Islands which we will be taking by air. I travel with him in the cockpit as we start by flying to North Ronaldsay, which is 25 nautical miles away and takes 15 minutes. From there, it’s on to Papa Westray which takes 8 minutes and then we go back to Kirkwall which takes a further 12 minutes.
We also fly between Sanday and Stronsay which takes between 3 and 4 minutes and is therefore probably the second shortest scheduled airline flight in the world. The flights have a really lovely homely and local communication touch and feel to them, with one couple even getting the pilot to check on the well-being of their dinner in the hold (a pie, I’m told!)
The weather back in Kirkwall is pleasant – even in June the temperature is around 11 degrees but the sun is out and it’s not raining so you can’t complain!
Our final flight was to be the world’s shortest scheduled airline flight, at just two minutes (though it can be done in less than 60 seconds if the wind is blowing in the right direction) between Westray and Papa Westray. This flight is operated as a round trip between Westray, Papa Westray and Kirkwall and is run for the benefit of those in Westray who need to get to Kirkwall.
Unfortunately, the changeable British weather scuppers my plans, with thick fog rolling in severely reducing visibility and forcing the operators to cancel the flight four hours after it was due to take off. It’s a shame as I had really wanted to get my Orkney Inter Island Air Service certificate for taking the world’s shortest flight but it wasn’t to be on this occasion. Never mind though – I’ll definitely be back and hopefully the weather we will be better then.
What did you think of the whole Orkney Island hopping experience? Let me know in the comments section down below and, as always, thanks for watching!
A Guide to Food & Drink in Scotland
Scotland is famed worldwide for some of its delicious local delicacies and fragrant malt whiskies, as well as our love for haggis, fish & chips, and other deep-fried delights. However, there’s a lot more to Scotland’s natural larder than meets the eye.
In all corners of the country, Scotland offers delicious dishes. From Michelin-star restaurants in the capital, cosy country pubs in the Highlands, to freshly caught seafood on the coast, and amazing street-food stalls in the cities – there’s a huge variety to choose from, so why not taste them all?
Explore regular farmers’ markets in various cities, as well as towns and villages, for hand-reared and fresh local produce that’ll be sure to get your taste buds tingling. Enjoy a range of meats, including lamb, venison, beef, and game, or seafood such as fresh salmon or trout, or sample some cheese, artisan chocolates, jams, pickles, breads and much more.
Speaking of farmers, our farms raise some of the highest quality produce that is used across the country in prestigious restaurants and atmospheric pubs alike. Why not try some mouth-watering Ayrshire bacon, Aberdeen Angus steak or tender Scottish lamb? Farmers on North Ronaldsay, Orkney feed their lamb on seaweed, giving the meat a distinctive, delicious taste.
Are you a sucker for seafood? Then fear not, as our fresh Scottish waters and surrounding seas are home to a variety of seafood, including mussels, oysters, shellfish, cod, haddock and more, which are all freshly-caught and served in local pubs and seafood restaurants across the country. . .
Who doesn’t love a tipple… or two? Our single malt whiskies are rich in flavour, each with their own distinct tasting notes and hints. With over 100 active distilleries, it’s no wonder we have so many varieties.
Scotland also specialises in craft beer, gin and ales with many quirky bars, pubs and restaurants offering a broad selection of beverages, with many well-known Scottish gin brands in the mix too, including Gordon’s, Tanqueray, and Hendricks, to name a few.
Wherever you decide to visit in Scotland, you won’t be far from award-winning local produce, homemade beers and ales, traditional haggis, neeps and tatties, as well as fields of crops, fruit and veg that make up our delicious dishes.

3 Days in Orkney Island - Scotland
Our BLOG DEBUT days2explore.com !
Together we explore the world!!
Mengapa Orkney ?
The Heart of Neolithic Orkney” .
4. Ring of Brodgar
Dikenal sebagai ‘Light in the North’.
6. Earl’s Palace

Orkney Trip
Here's a 10 min selection of places I visited in the famous Neolithic, Stone Age, prehistoric settlements on the Islands of Orkney off the North Scotland coast.
They still exist primarily because they used stone to build with and not wood as we used in the UK below them. They date from 4500 to 5000 years old & have hardly been worn despite the howling winds you can hear on the videos. My friend, David, was very instrumental in rebuiding & excavating many of the sites you see here such as Skara Brae in the 1970s. Quietest time to visit is from sept to xmas. Most popular is mid-year!
Scotland port of Kirkwall
Scotland, Kirkwall port of call. Kirkwall is a port with ferry services to Aberdeen and Lerwick, as well as the principal north islands in the group. At the heart of the town stands St. Magnus Cathedral. Population is around 9000.
John o' Groats - FULL VIDEO TOUR (Scotland, UK)
We decided to drive up to John o' Groats! It's the furthest north place you can visit when driving within the UK. There isn't a whole lot to do there, but there is a cool lighthouse to mark the lands end. You can also use this opporunity to walk the glen! lol. A couple of miles drive, you can see the second half of the video. This is John o' Groats town center. There is a place to sign your name if you're an 'End to Ender' (Running or more typically cycling from Land's End to John o' Groats). There is a gift shop and also a place to eat. It's a really nice drive, highly recommended!! Unfortunately, I receive a lovely speeding ticket from the local police, bunch of nice guys!
---------------
John o' Groats (Scottish Gaelic: Taigh Iain Ghròt) is a village 2.5 miles (4 km) NE of the village of Canisbay, Caithness, in the far north of Scotland. John o' Groats lies on Great Britain's northeastern tip, and is popular with tourists as one end of the longest distance between two inhabited British points on the mainland, with Land's End in Cornwall lying 876 miles (1,410 km) to the southwest. It is not the most northerly point on the island of Britain (nearby Dunnet Head is farther north).
John o' Groats is 690 miles (1,110 km) from London, 280 miles (450 km) from Edinburgh, 6 miles (9.7 km) from the Orkney Isles and 2,200 miles (3,500 km) from the North Pole. It is 4.25 miles (6.84 km) from the uninhabited island of Stroma.
A passenger ferry operates from John o' Groats to Burwick on South Ronaldsay in Orkney.
-----
Land's End to John o' Groats is the traversal of the whole length of the island of Great Britain between two extremities, in the southwest and northeast. The traditional distance by road is 874 miles (1,407 km) and takes most cyclists 10 to 14 days; the record for running the route is nine days. Off-road walkers typically walk about 1,200 miles (1,900 km) and take two or three months for the expedition. Two much-photographed signposts indicate the traditional distance at each end.
Land's End is the traditionally acknowledged extreme southern point of mainland England. It is in western Cornwall at the end of the Penwith peninsula. The O.S. Grid Reference of the road end is SW342250, Post Code TR19 7AA. In fact it, or strictly speaking Dr Syntax's Head, SW341253, a few hundred yards NW of the road end, is mainland England's most westerly point. The most southerly point is Lizard Point, about 9 miles (14 km) further south. Land's End is sometimes reckoned incorrectly as mainland England's most southwesterly point. This accolade belongs to Gwennap Head, SW365215, which is at least 2 miles (3.2 km) further south than Dr Syntax's Head but only about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) less west.
John o' Groats is the traditionally acknowledged extreme northern point of mainland Scotland, in northeastern Caithness, O.S. Grid Reference ND380735, Post Code KW1 4YR. The actual northernmost point is Dunnet Head about 2 miles (3 km) further north. The point that is farthest by road from Land's End is Duncansby Head, about 2 miles (3 km) east of John o' Groats. Duncansby Head is also the most northeasterly point of the Scottish mainland. The straight-line distance from Land's End to John o' Groats is 603 miles (970 km) as determined from O.S. Grid References, but such a route passes over a series of stretches of water in the Irish Sea. Google Earth reports a distance of 602.70 miles between the two iconic marker points.

Eddystone Lighthouse
The Eddystone lighthouse, 8 miles off Plymouth, Devon, UK. Many boats and lives have been lost at this reef, as you can see, submerged at high tide. At low spring tide, you can walk between the 2 towers.
The stump is the base of Smeaton's Tower which was moved to Plymouth Hoe when Douglass's tower was built in 1882.
This location has a long history and more can be found out at
The trip was organised by the Association of Lighthouse Keepers ( ) and apologies for the camera shake- the sea was a bit rough!
