Mengapa Orkney ? Sebenarnya karena tidak sengaja saja. Kebetulan akhir-akhir ini saya sedang mencari destinasi untuk melihat Aurora (setelah tidak berhasil mendapatkannya di Iceland) dan ketemulah Orkney Island ini.
Perjalanan dari London via British airways memakan waktu tidak sampai 4 jam (termasuk transit singkat di Aberdeen, salah satu kota di Skotlandia)
Saat kami tiba di Orkney Island airport, Kirkwall Airport, waktu masih sekitar jam 12 local time, kami segera mencari car rental di arrival hall, namun tidak ada satu pun yang memiliki stok mobil, dan berhubung saat kita sampai hari Sabtu, kegiatan kantor biasanya hanya setengah hari, dan seluruh kantor-kantor sudah tutup sampai Senin!! (salah satu kesalahan kami, jadi BD'ers, bila mau kemari, lebih baik buat konfirmasi menyewa mobil sebelum arrival)
Sebenarnya mengemudi di pulai ini sangat mudah, karena jalannya yang sangat sepi & posisi stir juga sama seperti dengan Indonesia.
Jadi, karena tidak dapat sewa mobil, pilihan kami hanya Public transport (walau interval 30 menit – 1 jam), karena pulau ini sedikit sekali penduduknya.
Public taxi pun tidak ada yang stand by di sekitar airport saat itu. Dengan bantuan staf airport, kami diorderkan taxi dan menunggu 20 menit. Setelah taxi datang kami menuju The Inn Guest House B&B.
Malam hari seperti sudah direncanakan, kami ingin chasing Aurora di Orkney island maka kita terus memantau pergerakan Aurora malam ini dari Orkney Aurora group di Facebook dan website. Sekitar jam 12 malam ada tanda-tanda Aurora dan kami bersiap untuk mengabadikan moment ini !
Penampakan Aurora walaupun hanya sekilas tapi kami sudah sangat excited !
TOP DESTINATIONS yang bisa di kunjungi selama 2-3 hari di ORKNEY ISLAND :
1. Stromness Harbour
Stromness adalah kota nelayan dengan rumah-rumah dan dermaga yang sangat sibuk tiap harinya.
2. Italian Chapel adalah salah satu bangunan bersejarah yang dibangun pada Januari 1942 oleh sekitar 550 orang tahanan perang Italia yang saat itu sedang membangun Churchill Barrier. Spot yang bagus buat foto-foto
3. SKARA BRAE, adalah perkampungan penduduk pada zaman Neolitikum, lebih tua dari Stonehenge di Inggris dan Piramida di Mesir, terletak di Teluk Skaill di pantai barat pulau terbesar di Orkney. Terdiri dari delapan rumah yang dibangun sekitar 3180 SM sampai 2500 SM. Perkampungan ini adalah peninggalan sejarah terlengkap di Eropa, oleh karenanya UNESCO World Heritage Site menobatkan Skara Brae sebagai salah satu dari empat situs yang menjadi “The Heart of Neolithic Orkney” .
4. Ring of Brodgar
Bangunan misterius batu-batu besar yang berdiri kokoh membentuk cincin besar.
Situs ini masih menjadi misteri dan kapan dibangun batu-batuan ini masih belum jelas, diperkirakan antara 2500 SM sampai 2000 SM.
5. St. Magnus Cathedral
Berada di pusat kota Kirkwall. Katedral St. Magnus adalah Gereja yang lokasinya paling utara di Inggris yang didirikan oleh Viking Earl Rognvald tahun 1137. Dikenal sebagai ‘Light in the North’.
6. Earl’s Palace
Berada tepat di sebelah Katedral St. Magnus, istana ini dibangun oleh Patrick, Earl of Orkney. Earl Patrick secara luas diakui sebagai salah satu bangsawan paling kejam dalam sejarah Skotlandia.
PS : Mungkin kalau bisa nyetir sendiri keliling pulau ini, bisa lebih banyak lagi destinasi yang bisa di kunjungi.

Orkney Trip
Here's a 10 min selection of places I visited in the famous Neolithic, Stone Age, prehistoric settlements on the Islands of Orkney off the North Scotland coast.
They still exist primarily because they used stone to build with and not wood as we used in the UK below them. They date from 4500 to 5000 years old & have hardly been worn despite the howling winds you can hear on the videos. My friend, David, was very instrumental in rebuiding & excavating many of the sites you see here such as Skara Brae in the 1970s. Quietest time to visit is from sept to xmas. Most popular is mid-year!
John o' Groats - FULL VIDEO TOUR (Scotland, UK)
We decided to drive up to John o' Groats! It's the furthest north place you can visit when driving within the UK. There isn't a whole lot to do there, but there is a cool lighthouse to mark the lands end. You can also use this opporunity to walk the glen! lol. A couple of miles drive, you can see the second half of the video. This is John o' Groats town center. There is a place to sign your name if you're an 'End to Ender' (Running or more typically cycling from Land's End to John o' Groats). There is a gift shop and also a place to eat. It's a really nice drive, highly recommended!! Unfortunately, I receive a lovely speeding ticket from the local police, bunch of nice guys!

John o' Groats (Scottish Gaelic: Taigh Iain Ghròt) is a village 2.5 miles (4 km) NE of the village of Canisbay, Caithness, in the far north of Scotland. John o' Groats lies on Great Britain's northeastern tip, and is popular with tourists as one end of the longest distance between two inhabited British points on the mainland, with Land's End in Cornwall lying 876 miles (1,410 km) to the southwest. It is not the most northerly point on the island of Britain (nearby Dunnet Head is farther north).
John o' Groats is 690 miles (1,110 km) from London, 280 miles (450 km) from Edinburgh, 6 miles (9.7 km) from the Orkney Isles and 2,200 miles (3,500 km) from the North Pole. It is 4.25 miles (6.84 km) from the uninhabited island of Stroma.
A passenger ferry operates from John o' Groats to Burwick on South Ronaldsay in Orkney.

Land's End to John o' Groats is the traversal of the whole length of the island of Great Britain between two extremities, in the southwest and northeast. The traditional distance by road is 874 miles (1,407 km) and takes most cyclists 10 to 14 days; the record for running the route is nine days. Off-road walkers typically walk about 1,200 miles (1,900 km) and take two or three months for the expedition. Two much-photographed signposts indicate the traditional distance at each end.
Land's End is the traditionally acknowledged extreme southern point of mainland England. It is in western Cornwall at the end of the Penwith peninsula. The O.S. Grid Reference of the road end is SW342250, Post Code TR19 7AA. In fact it, or strictly speaking Dr Syntax's Head, SW341253, a few hundred yards NW of the road end, is mainland England's most westerly point. The most southerly point is Lizard Point, about 9 miles (14 km) further south. Land's End is sometimes reckoned incorrectly as mainland England's most southwesterly point. This accolade belongs to Gwennap Head, SW365215, which is at least 2 miles (3.2 km) further south than Dr Syntax's Head but only about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) less west.
John o' Groats is the traditionally acknowledged extreme northern point of mainland Scotland, in northeastern Caithness, O.S. Grid Reference ND380735, Post Code KW1 4YR. The actual northernmost point is Dunnet Head about 2 miles (3 km) further north. The point that is farthest by road from Land's End is Duncansby Head, about 2 miles (3 km) east of John o' Groats. Duncansby Head is also the most northeasterly point of the Scottish mainland.The straight-line distance from Land's End to John o' Groats is 603 miles (970 km) as determined from O.S. Grid References, but such a route passes over a series of stretches of water in the Irish Sea. Google Earth reports a distance of 602.70 miles between the two iconic marker points.

North Ronaldsay Lighthouse - Tallest land-based lighthouse in the UK
Billy Muir, the former lighthouse keeper of North Ronaldsay Lighthouse, gives a tour of the lighthouse on a glorious June 20th day in 2012. Among the visitors is a couple from Yorkshire who berthed their yacht off Orkney's most northerly island for the day.

Dwarfie Stane, Scotland
The Dwarfie Stane is a megalithic chambered tomb carved out of a titanic block of Devonian Old Red Sandstone located in a steep-sided glaciated valley between the settlements of Quoys and Rackwick on Hoy, an island in Orkney, Scotland.
The stone is a glacial erratic located in desolate peatland.
