Paternoster is one of the oldest fishing villages on the West Coast of South Africa. It is situated 15 km north-west of Vredenburg and 145 km north of Cape Town, at Cape Columbine between Saldanha Bay and St Helena Bay. The town covers an area of 194.8 hectare and has approximately 1883 inhabitants. The origin of the name remains unknown. Many people believe that the name, which means ‘Our Father’ in Latin, refers to prayers said by Catholic Portuguese seamen when they became shipwrecked. Cape Columbine is well known for its lighthouse, the last manned lighthouse built on the South African coast. [1]. The Cape Columbine Lighthouse was commissioned on October 1, 1936. Both the headland and lighthouse derive their name from the barque Columbine, that was wrecked 1.5 km North of the lighthouse on March 31, 1829 [2].

The West Coast National Park lies 120 km north of Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is 36,259.8 hectares in size. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and the R27 coastal road, and runs from the town of Yzerfontein in the south up to the Langebaan Lagoon. The park was proclaimed in 1985. The park is particularly well known for its bird life and for the spring flowers which occur in the months from August to September, especially in the Postberg flower reserve section of the park. The park, with the islands in Saldanha Bay, has been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area.

South Africa has numerous popular beaches. From the West Coast just south of Namibia all the way around to Kosi Bay just south of Mozambique, there are more beaches than one can count. But there are few that remain untamed, out of the ordinary and barely frequented (unless you are prepared to consistently head to the Wild Coast for your swim).
