Shiraz is often referred to as the Cultural Capital of Iran or the city of gardens as it is home to many important poets and offers some beautiful gardens. More than that it used to be the actual capital of Persia for quite some time and therefore offers an interesting mix of sights.
We used our time in the city to explore the best things to do in Shiraz by focussing on attractions and spots that are interesting for younger travelers paired with important historic landmarks such as Persepolis or the Karim Khan citadel. But we also got to try some Iranian fast food and traditional vegetarian dishes to show you the whole spectra of Persian cuisine.
During our 4 days is Shiraz we experienced some very impressive sights such as the colorful Nasir ol Molk mosque in the early morning or the Shah Cheragh at night. Beside typical tourist attractions we wanted to see what the real Iran is like and reached out to local friends for further recommendations. This way we got to go to places locals use to hangout, have a coffee or simply relax.
This part of the trip was executed within 4 days - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do in Shiraz:
- Vakil Mosque
- Vakil Bazaar
- Karim Khan Citadel
- Shah Sheraq Mosque & Holy Shrine
- Nasir ol Molk Mosque
- Eram Garden
- Chamran Grand Hotel
- Fallodeh
- Tomb of Hafez
- Haft Khan Restaurant
- Persepolis
- Qavam Restaurant
This video is part of „Inside Iran“ - a documentary series introducing you to popular and unknown sights / things to do in Iran as well as the Persian cuisine and the super friendly locals we met on our trip from Tehran to Isfahan, Shiraz and Yazd. With this series I want to create a better understanding of the country and it’s people without focussing on politics or religion.

PERSEPOLIS: The Forgotten Wonder of the World?
You know how some places just WOW you? That's what's happening to me right now, at Persepolis in Iran.
Persepolis is the name of the former capital of the Achaemenid (Persian) Empire. Archaeologists and historians believe that this city began being built in 518 BC - or 2,530 years ago.
Today, as you wander around Persepolis, you can see incredible stone columns and walls with extremely detailed inscriptions, giving us insight for how these humans used to live their lives. The most impressive thing to me is that nothing in Persepolis is restored -- it's all in its original form. I cannot imagine how much more polished Persepolis looked back in its heyday!
After spending all day exploring Persepolis and being so stunned that my jaw is dropped to the ground, I cannot understand why it's not considered in any of the '7 wonder of the world' lists. I have been to all 7 wonders on each list, and Persepolis would easily be in my top 3!!!!
Have you ever heard of Persepolis? Are you as fascinated as I am by this place?

Persepolis - Iran
Persepolis, also known as the Throne of Jamshid (Taxt e Jamšid), was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire (ca. 550–330 BC).
Persepolis is situated 60 km northeast of the city of Shiraz in Fars Province, Iran. The earliest remains of Persepolis date back to 515 BC. It exemplifies the Achaemenid style of architecture. UNESCO declared the ruins of Persepolis a World Heritage Site in 1979.
