Perth is a city in central Scotland, located on the banks of the River Tay. It is the administrative centre of Perth and Kinross council area and the historic county town of Perthshire. It has a population of about 47,180. Perth has been known as The Fair City since the publication of the story Fair Maid of Perth by Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott in 1828. During the later medieval period the city was also called St John's Toun or Saint Johnstoun by its inhabitants in reference to the main church dedicated to St John the Baptist.     Huntingtower and Ruthvenfield, a village of Perthshire, Scotland, on the River Almond, some ten miles north-west of Perth. Bleaching, the chief industry, dated from 1774, when the bleaching-field was formed. By means of an old aqueduct, said to have been built by the Romans, it was provided with water from the River Almond, the properties of which rendered it especially suited for bleaching. Bleaching continued Huntingtower until 1981. Huntingtower Castle, a once formidable structure, was the scene of the Raid of Ruthven , when the Protestant lords, headed by William, 4th Lord Ruthven and 1st Earl of Gowrie , kidnapped the boy-king James VI, on August 22, 1582.
