TRIP TO TAIWAN! 台湾 - JIUFEN & PINGXI SKY LANTERN
Welcome to Taiwan! In this 24 hour layover trip, we travel into the mountainside to Jiufen where we try street food and visit Pingxi to make the magical sky lanterns.
We landed in Taiwan after taking the Eva Air Hello Kitty flight from LAX. We travel from Taipei to visit the northern coast starting at Jinguashi. We visit the Yin-Yang Sea and a copper/ gold mine dating back to the era of Japanese rule over the island.
Next, we travel a few minutes north into the mountains to visit Jiufen, the town that inspired the classic anime movie Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki, Japan's equivalent to Walt Disney in film making. We wander the cobblestone streets and alleyways filled with food vendors and try the bubble tea and Taiwan's traditional stinky tofu. We also eat at a dim sum restaurant which overlooks Jiufen.
Next, we head to Pingxi where we make sky lanterns and release them in Shifen Old Street to send our wishes to the heavens. Our lantern's wish was Peace Love and Taiwan!

TRAVEL TAIPEI TAIWAN | PingXi, Lanterns & Street Food 平溪老街 #4
#PingXi, by far one of the oldest districts in Taipei, is definitely a tourists' favorite when it comes to experiencing authentic #TaiwaneseCulture and tradition. The famous #Lantern festival that happens every February really puts PingXi on the map because it is simply an incredible site you only see in the Disney animation Tangled.
Kevin and I decided to visit PingXi #OldStreet on a Monday because we were hoping to avoid the crowds. Not so lucky, unfortunately, tourists from South Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan flooded the district. Despite the train ride being packed like sardines, we enjoyed every bit of it.

5 Things to do in Jiufen, Taiwan
Jiufen is considered the most iconic village of #Taiwan due to it being an unique mountain village that was used in the past as a gold mining town. Subscribe to my channel ► for weekly videos!
Book your complete Jiufen adventure for just $20 USD
Jiufen Photos and extra tips on my blog:
Nowadays, #Jiufen is a popular tourist attraction and quite legendary for its stunning scenery from the A-mei tea house.
The A-mei tea house is perhaps the best known attraction in Jiufen, rumor goes it was featured in Ghibili's Spirited Away (Anime movie) by Hayao Miyazaki.
80% discount on portable Wifi station rental in Taiwan:
Taipei Unlimited Travel Pass:(ONLY $39 USD)
Since Jiufen is an hour drive east of the capital Taipei, you may want to make Jiufen a day trip with a possible stop at Keelung city.
In Jiufen I recommend you start with the Jiufen Old Street which is a market street with many food vendors selling delicious treats like stinky tofu, almond drinks, fish balls and peanut ice cream wraps.
These are my 5 Things to do in Jiufen:
1. Jiufen Old Street
2. Stinky Tofu
3. Almond Drink
4. Peanut Ice Cream Wrap
5. A-Mei Tea House #Ghibli
Make sure you visit Jiufen in good physical condition since the stairways can be very steep so do not forget a good pair of running shoes. It could also rain a lot so an umbrella is highly recommended.

TAIWAN (DAY 2) | JIUFEN, PINGXI, YEHLIU GEOPARK
Hey everyone!
We had an extra early start for our second day in Taipei. I hired a driver I found on TripAdvisor (I'll leave his details below) and I highly recommend him. Riding in a taxi gave Kenny and I the convenience to move at our own pace without worrying about strict bus or train schedules.
All in all we had seven stops on our tour with Mr. Lin:
1) Yehliu National Geopark
2) Yin Yang Sea
3) The Golden Waterfall
4) Jiufen
5) Houtong Cat Village
6) Pingxi Waterfall
7) Pingxi Railway
Out of the places we visited, I especially liked Jiufen. One of the main reasons I decided to visit Taiwan was because of how this mining village was said to have inspired Hayao Miyazaki to create Spirited Away (one of my favorite movies).
Thank you for watching and stay tuned for DAY 3. :)

TRAVEL TAIPEI TAIWAN | Most Scenic Hike in Taipei 貓空步道 #11
#Maokong, known for its tea farming and brewing, has held a special place in my heart the first time I visited with Kevin. It's ashamed to say that I wouldn't even consider coming up to the hill if I wasn't looking for unique places for Kevin to experience the culture of #Taiwan. When I finally realized the incredible sceneries and the sensational tea houses Maokong offers, I couldn't get enough of this place. So here we are again, exploring deeper into this village hidden away from the noise and the crwods in downtown #Taipei.
