Places to see in ( Viterbo - Italy )
Viterbo is a city in central Italy. The Palazzo dei Papi, a palace with an elegant loggia, was the seat of the popes in the 13th century. Nearby is San Lorenzo Cathedral, with a Gothic bell tower, frescoes and a 15th-century baptismal font. The Colle del Duomo Museum houses archaeological artifacts and a sacred art collection. The frescoed Palazzo dei Priori, Viterbo’s city hall, is on Piazza del Plebiscito.
Viterbo is famous for the trasporto della Macchina di Santa Rosa, a procession which takes place on the evening of 3rd September, to commemorate the relocation of the body of Saint Rosa from the Church of Santa Maria del Poggio to the church of San Damiano (the Sanctuary of Santa Rosa). The Macchina di Santa Rosa is a gigantic structure, nearly 30 metres high, which is carried through the streets by a large team of strong local men. Contests are held to select designs for the Macchina, which is replaced every five years. The porters who bear the Macchina are organised in an association, the Sodalizio dei Facchini di Santa Rosa, which has its own little museum.
Apart from the churches which are dotted around Viterbo, the town's sights tend to be concentrated around two squares: Piazza del Plebiscito, the municipal heart of town, and Piazza San Lorenzo, the religious centre. The two are not far apart, and it's easy to explore central Viterbo on foot.
Located in the attractive Piazza San Lorenzo, the Palazzo dei Papi or Palazzo Papale (Papal Palace) is a striking reminder of this town's former importance. Built between 1255 and 1267 to house the popes who had sought refuge in Viterbo, its most striking feature is an elegant seven-arched loggia. The small courtyard behind these interlocking arches is also pretty, with a lion-bedecked fountain and views out towards the city walls.
Viterbo's cathedral is dedicated to one of the town's two patron saints, St Laurence (the other is Rosa, the focus for the town's biggest religious festival). The campanile shows striped Tuscan/Umbrian influences. The cathedral was badly damaged by Allied bombing in 1944, and the roof and nave were subsequently rebuilt to an earlier design. Next door, the small Museo del Colle del Duomo (Cathedral hill museum) has displays of the cathedral's relics and treasures: paintings, vestments and many reliquaries. Look out for a sixteenth-century reliquary which claims to contain the chin of St. John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista), surely one of the most popular and widely-distributed of all saints. The museum is closed at lunchtimes.
The two connected buildings of the Palazzo dei Priori and Palazzo del Podestà dominate Piazza del Plebiscito. These have been the centre for the town's civic authorities for centuries, and can be visited by the public. The Rocca Albornoz is a fortress originally built in the fourteenth century for the Spanish Cardinal Albornoz. Today it houses the Museo Nazionale, which contains displays about Etruscan architecture (with reconstructions) and statues from the Roman town of Ferento. Closed Mondays.

Places to see in ( Prato - Italy )
Places to see in ( Prato - Italy )
Prato sits in the heart of Tuscany, near some of the most famous of the world's cities of art: Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Siena. It is the second-largest city in the Region, as well as the third in Central Italy for number of inhabitants. The city's roots lie in the realms of art and nature, even if its economy - and that of the Province - was historically founded on the textile sector. Such a history is still alive and kicking, spurring on its growth beyond the riches it created; the area remains particularly rich in its values of hospitality, and in its cultural diversity.
The city of Prato, internationally renowned for the textile production that has its roots in a time-honored tradition, gather the evolution phases of this activity together in a museum. It is a journey through the historical memories and world of textiles. The terrain is rather varied, offering historic-artistic attraction of great significance along an itinerary in discovery of the treasures of the Etruscan, Medieval, and contemporary ages.
The Province of Prato is an authentic discovery of unexpected treasures. In a province primarily known for its important textile districts, it is less-known that it preserves historic works of beauty, where traditions and a prized cuisine blend with the beautiful scenery to create a dynamic that is fresh, modern and new. The Province comprises the Comunes of Cantagallo, Carmignano, Montemurlo, Poggio a Caiano, Vaiano and Vernio.
Piazza del Comune is the original nucleus of Prato, a crossroad of two Medieval streets. It hosts the 13th-century Palazzo Comunale and the medieval Palazzo Pretorio, which is characterized by red bricks and is the home of the civic museum that will open again on March 22nd after a long period of closure due to restoration. In the middle of the square, there is a statue of Prato's famous merchant, Francesco Datini. You'll also see a fountain: it's copy of the Fontana del Bacchino (Little Bacchus), the original of which is inside the Palazzo Comunale.
Piazza del Duomo is just few steps from Piazza del Comune. The main attraction here is the Cathedral of Santo Stefano, a jewel of Romanesque Gothic architecture, which featuresAndrea della Robbia's sculptured relief doorway and Donatello's pulpit. Inside, you'll find frescoes by Paolo Uccello, Filippo Lippi and Agnolo Gaddi. On September 8, each year, this is where the Display of the Sacred Belt of the Madonna takes place. It is one of the main celebrations in Prato.
San Domenico church is easy to reach from Piazza del Duomo, by take Via Convenevole. San Domenico is a refined Gothic structure in stone and brick. Passing through the cloister, you'll see the Museo di Pittura Murale. Palazzo Datini is another point of interest because because it is a rare example of a medieval frescoed residence. It was built in 1383 for the merchant Francesco Datini, and, in 1409, housed Pope Alexander V.
In Piazza San Francesco stands the church of the same name, which features a beautiful green and white marble façade. It houses a funerary monument of Geminiano Inghirami and frescoes by Niccolò Gerini in the Migliorati Chapel. Piazza delle Carceri is the home of the Emperor's Castle, erected by Frederick II and built between 1237 and 1247 by Riccardo da Lentini. Here, you'll also find the Basilica of S. Maria delle Carceri, which was commissioned by Lorenzo de' Medici to Giuliano da San Gallo. It features works by Andrea della Robbia, Bernardo Buontalenti and stained glass windows by Domenico Ghirlandaio.
The Cassero Medievale is a medieval bridge house that has a super-elevated fortified walk, accessible from Viale Piave, just in front of the Eastern Gate of the Emperor's Castle. Nearby, you'll find the Museo del Tessuto, the only museum of its kind in Italy. In Piazza San Marco, there is the Square Form with Cut, a white marble sculpture by Henry Moore, which was donated to the City of Prato in 1974. Outside the walls, there is a main attraction you cannot miss: the Centro per l'arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci, located in Viale della Repubblica. It is not just an exhibition space but alsoa place for international research on contemporary art and textile technology.

Places to see in ( Grosseto - Italy ) Area archeologica di Roselle
Places to see in ( Grosseto - Italy ) Area archeologica di Roselle
The archaeological area of Roselle includes the remains of the ancient Etruscan city of Roselle ( Rusellae for the Romans ). It is located 8 kilometers north of the city of Grosseto . In 2016, the archaeological area recorded 18 716 visitors. Roselle was located 10 km from Grosseto , at the crossing point between the Ombrone valley and the Grosseto Maremma , on the shore of the ancient Lake Prile , and was an ancient lucumonie of central Etruria, a member of Etruscan Dodecapoli .
It preserves an overlap of buildings and walls belonging to the Villanovan , Etruscan and then Roman civilizations . The discovery of red-figure Attic vases testifies to the commercial contacts of the city with Greece and the Greek colonies of southern Italy. Founded in the seventh century BC , it was mentioned by Dionysius of Halicarnassus among the cities that brought aid to the Latins in the war against Tarquinio Prisco . It developed to the detriment of neighboring lucumonies in particular Vetulonia .
In 294 BC it was conquered by the Romans . It became the first Roman municipality and later, with Augustus colony . The Forum and the basilica date back to this period, a system for collecting rainwater and a thermal building. Traces of an amphitheater and villas are also preserved. Starting from the sixth century it fell like all the Maremma , scourged by malaria . The city was abandoned until the reclamation of the area by Pietro Leopoldo at the end of the eighteenth century. In the fifties the remains of the ancient buildings were brought to light through a long campaign of excavations carried out by the archaeologist Aldo Mazzolai .
The walls were built by the Etruscans between the seventh and sixth centuries BC The perimeter of the wall circuit is over 3 km, with an average height of about 7 m. The first traces of frequentation of this area of the settlement are with some layers containing findings of Villanovan age and of late VII - beginning VI century BC
On the southern side of the forum, near the domus of the mosaics, are the archaeological remains of the ancient Roman temple of the flamines Augustales , which was built during the Imperial period ( 1st century AD ). The pagan place of worship was transformed in the early Middle Ages into a place of Christian worship, dedicated to San Silvestro , whose existence is ascertained starting from 765
On the slopes of the northern hill a Roman thermal complex has been found , characterized by walls that in elevation have the technique of ' opus reticulatum with plinth and brick locks, while in the foundation there is the opus caementicium . The structure is divided into two sectors, with an intermediate area of unclear angles.
The necropolis that develops around the church is organized by terraces : the burials have a distribution dictated by constant distances and have a good construction technique. Built in the high medieval era outside the walls, its archaeological remains are preserved in the area of Poggio Mosconcino , in La Canonica , between the ancient civitas and the Tino di Moscona . Attached to the church there are also the remains of the rectory , which served as a bishop's residence until 1138 , the year of the transfer of the Rosellana diocese to Grosseto .
