There are no exclusively, 100% nudist beaches in Llanes or, as a matter of fact, in Asturias. All of them are mixed, some small, some large and everyone tans together happily. But Tayada (also known as La Atalaya beach) is special for a lot of reasons. One being that Llanes is an attraction for tourists. If you are looking for a small and safe beach in Llanes, perfect for the entire family then Buelna is the perfect choice. A 50 meters long beach of fine golden sand, Buelna is mostly known for the peculiar looking rock facing it and the landscape around it.
Locals and people familiar with this beach call it Antilles. Maps and guides of the Llanes coastline might show it as Cué beach so be warned that they are the same beach. You might look at the pictures of Andrín and think you have seen them somewhere else before, but let me tell you that what you remember seeing might be pictures of its “twin sister” called Ballota beach.
Completely missing from official maps and guides, Portiellu is a secluded nudist beach hidden in Llanes really close to the Toró beach. Why the secrecy? Well, I don’t think there is any secrecy when it comes to the official tourism board, is just that Llanes has so many beaches that only the better preserved ones. Troenzo is the one of the popular beaches belonging to the beautiful village of Celorio. If you are familiar with the municipality of Llanes then you probably know that a lot of the most popular beaches of this municipality actually concentrate in Celorio and they are too many to add them all here.
I must confess I was a bit lost when I arrived at Celorio for the first time and saw Las Cámaras beach and then the maps telling me I was supposed to see here the Palombina beach while (with low tide) I was actually seeing 2 beaches not one. Finding La Entrada beach is rather easy, most of the beaches in the municipality of Llanes being quite accessible, with parking, amenities, some of them urban and surrounded by bars, restaurants and accommodation.
Everybody knows the Ballota beach. Actually everybody knows the beaches of Llanes and Ballota is one of the most beautiful there (don’t mistake this Ballota with the Ballota beach in Cudillero, they couldn’t be more different) Getting to Ballota is easy. Everyone, Asturian or not, knows Torimbia, the most popular nudist beach of Asturias. Its shape and winding access make it impossible to forget and once you were here, you will remember it forever. Why is that? Torimbia is a typical shell-shaped beach of white sand (and boulders right under the cliffs), 500 meters long.
Borizu is one of the beaches of the village of Celorio, in Llanes, Asturias. If you have ever been to Llanes then you know that this is a big thing. If you haven’t been here before, you are about to find out why with just mentioning the village of Celorio it should be a good. This place is famous for more than one reason, so let’s take them one by one: first of all because Guadamía is a beautiful and rather unusual beach, second of all because it belongs to 2 municipalities (LLanes and Ribadesella) and the third reason is that the cliffs surrounding this beach are truly spectacular.

On the Day 18 of our Camino de Santiago del Norte we got from the campsite La Paz in Pendueles to the campground Playa de Troenzo in Celorio.
We woke up pretty late to a cloudy morning in a beautiful location at camping La Paz. We were more than happy with it because of its incredible location between the two beaches and unusual concept. It was extremely hard to wake up to the gloomy weather that was staying lately and you know when you like the place you kind of don't hurry to leave. We tried to pack everything up as quickly as possible and get on the trail. We started getting through the fields and went out to the beautiful viewpoint that produced the strange sounds. We took some pictures of the rocks and cliffs and got closer to the place where a thunder like sounds were heard...

GUADAMÍA is famous for more than one reason, so let’s take them one by one: first of all because Guadamía is a beautiful and rather unusual beach, second of all because it belongs to 2 municipalities (LLanes and Ribadesella) and the third reason is that the cliffs surrounding this beach are truly spectacular. It happens that a lot of coves or beaches are called Portiello in Asturias, this one being the only one in Ribadesella. There are 2 more in Llanes and one in Cudillero, but again, although we saw most of the beaches and hidden coves in Asturias we surely missed some. Impossible not to.
A beach that is not a beach but a cove and a name that’s not exactly its name, how interesting is that? It’s hard to say the name of this place, it is Arbidel, Aberdil or Arvidel? That’s because in Spanish both V and B are pronounced B and so the name can be written. Arra is the last beach in the municipality of Ribadesella, running along the bottom of windswept cliffs battered by the sea, in an area where sandy beaches are nonexistent. This beach shows up on all guides and maps, being promoted by the local tourism board.
Tereñes is not a beach like all the other beaches in Ribadesella are. It does not have sand and it never had – it is a cove hidden between cliffs where dinosaurs used to spend their summer vacation long, long time ago Located in the village of Tereñes. Small cove situated to the east of the village of Ribadesella and separated from Santa Marina beach by the Corbero or Atalaya mountain, home to the hermitage of the Virgen de la Guía (The Guiding Virgin). This hermit was built on top of the cliffs and can be visited
Santa Marina is a long beach of fine sand located in the town of Ribadesella, to the left of the river Sella estuary. It’s an urban beach surrounded by a promenade considered one of the main attractions of the Eastern side of Asturias, along with the towns of Llanes and Cangas de Onís/Arriondas
Vega is the first extended beach belonging to the municipality of Ribadesella (coming from West) and one of the most popular of Asturias. It has been declared a Natural Monument because of its great botanical interest and dunes – it’s interesting cause it also contains the remains of dinosaurs footprints at its Eastern end.

Camino del Norte, 16: San Vicente de la Barquera a Poo de Llanes.
Un bonito amanecer en San Vicente de la Barquera. Marea baja en los ríos Escudo y Gandarilla. Los primeros rayos de sol iluminan los ojos del puente de la Maza.
El camino oficial se dirige hacia La Acebosa. Nosotros elegimos un camino más al norte que sube hacia Prellezo, con los Picos de Europa en el horizonte. Una vez pasado este pequeño pueblo comienza el descenso entre eucaliptos hasta las marismas de Tina Menor. No sé cómo es el otro camino, pero éste merece la pena.
El camino vuelve a ascender tras cruzar el “puente viejo” sobre la ría de Tina Menor. Dura subida, Pesués y un camino a veces junto a la vía del tren nos lleva hasta Unquera, último pueblo de Cantabría. El río Deva nos separa de Asturias y del pueblo de Bustio.
Cruzamos el puente y una cuesta realmente dura es nuestro primer contacto con esta nueva tierra. Dos kilómetros que no olvidaremos. Eso sí, las vistas sobre la ría de Tina Mayor merecen la pena, y Colombres, arriba de la cuesta, también.
Colombres, villa de indianos. Entre todas las casas de estilo indiano, colonial, destaca el palacete “La Quinta Guadalupe”, hoy Archivo Indiano y Museo de la Emigración.
La visita a Colombres ha merecido la pena. Volveré algún día con más tiempo.
Salimos por un sendero y bajo una encina. Llegamos a la carretera general, hoy en día en obras, pero pronto volvemos a los senderos y cruzamos un antiguo puente romano, hoy con la autopista rompiendo el paisaje.
Dicho sendero cruza la carretera, la vía del tren y llega hasta los prados junto a los acantilados. Este paisaje nos acompaña hasta Buelna. Caminamos los últimos kilómetros junto al mar. Y como estamos en verano bajamos hasta el mar a pegarnos un buen baño. Acabar la etapa en una playa es un buen premio. Nuestras piernas se relajan en las aguas del Cantábrico.

Hiking Asturias: Ruta del Alba.
This is the most famous hiking route you can do in Asturias (North of Spain). It is located in the Natural Park of Redes, in Sobrescobio (no drones allowed). It starts in Soto de Aguas and ends in Cruce de los Rios, although we ended ours a little bit earlier, in Puente del Alba.
Our route was 5 km long each way and it is very easy to walk, since it is a concrete path. The way back is the same way you come in. Children can do it without a problem and along the way you will find two picnic areas: the first one is around 1 - 1.5 km. To access it you need to cross a wooden bridge. The second one is in Puente de la Vega.

ROCK CLIMBING IN ASTURIAS (ESPAÑA - SPAIN)
The rugged and mountainous nature of the Asturian landscape lends itself perfectly to Rock Climbing and is becoming a destination of choice for serious climbers from all over the world who are looking for something a bit different. That said, Asturias as a climbing destination is still relativity unknown except for those in the know.
The local Spanish climbers have been very busy over the past few decades bolting and developing many of the crags and now there are literary hundreds of routes to choose from.
In terms of climbing grades, Asturias has it all. From easy learning grade climbs to the hair raising multi-pitch routes of Naranjo De Bulnes (Picu Urriellu) in the Picos de Europa which is now seen as one of the most difficult climbs in Europe if not the world. Every type of climbing is catered for and there are plenty of facilities on offer for climbers visiting the region. Asturias has a good network of Refugios which are mountain hostels that are normally situated at or close to most of the best climbing areas. These hostels are very reasonably priced which is a bonus in these times. If you are looking for more salubrious accommodation then you'll never be short of places to stay as nearly all of the climbing areas in Asturias are situated in nature reserves and protected biospheres where tourism is already well developed.
A couple of important things to note about climbing in Asturias is that firstly, the local climbers are very easy going and very welcoming and provided language isn't a barrier, they will be happy and in many ways quite proud to part with any information they might have about routes, weather etc. Secondly, you will never be competing with others to get access to the routes. There are now so many bolted routes that you'll be guaranteed full days of uninterrupted climbing. It should also be mentioned that despite been Spain, the local weather is much more comfortable to climb in due to its northerly position.... Basically, you won't be baked onto the rock like you would in the south of the country.
The beauty about climbing here in Asturias is that it's not just about climbing. The adrenaline junkies amongst you will appreciate all the other extreme sports you can avail of like caving, pot holing, canoeing, white water rafting, surfing, paragliding etc. Asturias is a paradise for any activity you can think of.
You'll also be well fed and watered. The food is wonderful and varied in Asturias and is also incredibly well priced. A three course lunch called Menu del dia (including wine) will start from about €10 upwards. At night, when you are relaxing from a full days climbing, then the local cider will refresh you and thankfully, doesn't induce much of a hangover.
Getting to Asturias is now a relatively easy affair with regular flights from London Stansted to Oviedo and ferry services from the UK to Santander which is only two hours away from the Picos de Europa. There are also many internal flights from Madrid and Barcelona servicing the region. The motorway network is good and well signposted but it is recommended that if you are travelling by car then bring a GPS as signposts on secondary roads are more or less non-existent.

Places to see in ( Asturias - Spain ) Cangas de Onis Puente Romano
Known as the Roman Bridge of Cangas de Onís, the “Puente Vieyu” or “Puentón”, this is one of the best-known symbols of the Principality of Asturias. Although this site may have been used in Roman times to cross the Sella River, and this may have been the reason for the foundation of Cangas de Onís, the first capital of the Kingdom of Asturias, in fact the current Roman Bridge” dates to mediaeval times, possibly to the end of the 13th century.
Cangas de Onis Puente Romano stylised and graceful outline, and the line of the arches take us back to a Romanesque style in transition to Gothic. It has three slightly pointed arches. The central, under which the river flows, is by far the biggest and is cambered. The two on each side are of different sizes.
From the central arch hangs a reproduction of the famous Victory Cross, a work of precious metal dating to the start of the 10th century that is kept in Oviedo Cathedral.
