Belogradchik is a town in Vidin Province, Northwestern Bulgaria, the administrative centre of the homonymous Belogradchik Municipality. The town, whose name literally means small white town, is situated in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains just east of the Serbian border and about 50 km south of the Danube River. The town is close to the Belogradchik Rocks, which cover an area of 90 square kilometers and reach up to 200 meters in height. As of December 2009, it has a population of 5,334 inhabitants.

The Belogradchik Rocks are a group of strangely shaped sandstone and conglomerate rock formations located on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains near the town of Belogradchik in northwest Bulgaria. The rocks vary in color from primarily red to yellow; some of the rocks reach up to 200 m in height. Many rocks have fantastic shapes and are associated with interesting legends. They are often named for people or objects they are thought to resemble. The Belogradchik Rocks have been declared a Natural Landmark by the Bulgarian government and are a major tourist attraction in the region. They are the only habitat of the critically endangered Bulgarian endemic plant Hieracium belogradcense.

The Historical Museum Vidin, sometimes shortened to Konaka museum , is located in Vidin, Bulgaria. The museum, founded in 1956, is situated in a former Ottoman konak. The nice building is among the cultural memorials of the region. Originally the 18th-century building was used as the Home by Osman Pazvantoğlu and later as police office, and the central tower was a lighthouse. After liberation the building was reconstructed and enriched with elements from Bulgarian Renaissance architecture. In 1956, the building was used for a historical weapon show.

BELOGRADCHIK - Bulgaria

The city of Belogradchik is located in the northwestern part of Bulgaria. It is picturesquely spread over the western part of the Stara Planina Mountain, in the southwestern foot of the Belogradchik garland, at 545m above sea level.

The unique Belogradchik rocks are among the most beautiful natural landmarks in Bulgaria. The Belogradchik fortress was constructed by the Romans in I-III century. The present view of the fortress dates from 1808-1837.

The Magura cave is in the Northwest of Bulgaria, some 180km from the capital of Sofia. It is 17km away from the town of Belogradchik 1,5km from the village of Rabisha, and 35km southwest of the town of Vidin on the Danube.It is hollowed out in the Rabisha hill limestone, 461m above sea level. The Magura is one of the largest caves in Bulgaria. The total length of the galleries, discovered till now, exceeds 2000 m..It consists of one main gallery, pointing southeast - northwest and three side branches.The cave-halls are enormous in size. Each one of them is over 200m long, more than 50m wide and over 20m high.

Next to the cave is the Rabisha Lake - the largest inland lake in Bulgaria. It is up to 35-40m deep. The Rabisha lake is of tectonic origin.

It offers perfect conditions for surfing and swimming. The lake is also an attractive place for hunting and fishing - lake birds, carp and sheet-fish can be found in it.

The Belogradchik Rocks are spread over the western part of the Balkan Mountains and cover an area of 50 km2. They extend from the village of Rabisha in the west to the village of Belotintsi in the east.

The central group of rocks is situated just to the south and adjacent to the town of Belogradchik. Located here are the most interesting and impressive formations: Adam and Eve, the Mushrooms, the Schoolgirl, the Bear, the Dervish, the Shepherd Boy, the Lion, the Camel, the Madonna, the Horseman, the Monks, the goddess Bendida, the Rebel Velko, and many other stone figures.

The second group of rocks lies to the west of Belogradchik. The rocks are of the Alpine variety and are surrounded by steep precipices. The most famous of these rocks are Zbegovete, Erqupriya, and Boritch

The third group of rocks lies 4 km. to the east of Belogradchik and includes the rocks around the Latin Gate and the Lipenik Cave.

The fourth group of rocks lies between the villages of Borovitsa and Falkovets. These rocks include the Pine Stone, the Bee Stone, the Torlak, and the Maid’s Rock.

The fifth group of rocks lies between the villages of Gyurgich and Belotintsi.
