[4K] BORDEAUX, FRANCE - Best City Walking Tour
Join us for this 4k virtual tour of Bordeaux on the Garonne River in southwest France. Experience local life on as if you were there.
Filmed in April, we start our slow tv walking tour in front of the iconic La Grosse Cloche (Great Bell) on Rue Saint-James just off Cours Victor Hugo.
Rue Saint-James is just one of many streets we'll wander where you'll find great coffee shops, restaurants and independent boutiques.
We enter Place Fernand Lafargue, a popular area for nightlife before turning right onto Rue Sainte-Colombe with it's shaded outdoor bars. Turning up Rue du Pas-Saint-Georges, and then Rue du Palais de l'Ombrière, we discover Place du Palais, site of Porte Cailhau - the historic gate with it's incredible facade.
This impressive arch leads us out onto the Quai Richelieu - and the banks of the Garonne River. Here we see the Pont de Pierre (Stone Bridge) that connects the East and West sides of the City.
We follow the river, though not as far as the Place de la Bourse and
Le Miroir D'Eau - instead our walk takes us back across the road by the Charles Dickens Pub and along Rue de la Cour des Aides to the
site of Église Saint-Pierre. This church is surrounded by great places to eat, drink and be entertained.
We follow Rue Parlement Saint-Pierre to Place du Parlement with it's much photographed fountain before heading to Rue Sainte-Catherine, Bordeaux's mots famous shopping street and often said to be the longest pedestrian street in Europe.
We finish our walk by visiting Place de la Comedie, seeing the Opéra National de Bordeaux on our right, the Intercontinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hôtel on our left (Bordeaux's most famous hotel) and seeing Carrousel Palace 1900, the city's colourful merry-go-round attraction on Allées de Tourny.
A slow walk through the city's sights and history has to be first on the list of the free top 10 things to do in Bordeaux France.

Les Baux-de-Provence, France
Les Baux-de-Provence in the south of France is a remarkable sight, a unique stone village dramatically perched 750 feet high on a rocky plateau with a history dating to the Middle Ages, and a prehistory going back probably about 8,000 years. Les Baux was once a powerful medieval castle that controlled vast territories, including 79 other villages throughout Provence, but now it's a tiny quaint ruin.
Charming as could be, this cozy hill-top hamlet is a major tourist attraction with 1.5 million annual visitors, making it the second most-popular site in the region after the Pope's Palace in Avignon. This tells you that it is very worthwhile, but it can get uncomfortably crowded unless you take preventive action, like visiting in the off-season, or arriving early or late in the day.
Subscribe now:
It's only about 3000 feet long and about 700 feet wide and that's it.”
The medieval village was built up from the 10th century and by the peak of occupation during the late 14th century nearly 3,000 people lived in this small space, although the permanent population nowadays living inside the old town is only 20 people.
The plateau was naturally easy to defend due to vertical cliffs all around, and was further reinforced with stone walls and castle as protection from invasion by Franks, Catalans, Saracens and marauding bandits of the chaotic Middle Ages. However the castle was finally attacked and destroyed in the 1600s by Cardinal Richelieu and his large well-armed French army, leaving us with dramatic ruins of the castle, which they call the Château. And it retains a wild setting among rugged rocky hills.
You will not get lost because there is only one main pedestrian lane about 300 meters long with a few short side alleys leading to viewpoints. You really don’t need much of a guidebook to help get through this smallest of Provencal destinations – just follow your nose and wander about. But we do have some suggestions.
There are two parts to visit in Les Baux -- the free village, with its pedestrian lanes, shops, restaurants and old buildings, and the paid attraction, the ruins of that castle on the plateau where you can see some of the old buildings and fortifications.

The Passage Jouffroy is a covered passage of Paris, in the 9th arrondissement. It runs between the Boulevard Montmartre to the south and the rue de la Grange-Batelière to the north.
Description
The Passage Jouffroy is a covered walkway in the south of the 9th arrondissement of Paris, on the border with the 2nd arrondissement. It begins in the south between 10 and 12 boulevard Montmartre, and ends in the north at 9 rue de la Grange-Batelière.
Each passage is about 140 metres (460 ft) long and 4 metres (13 ft) wide. About 80 metres (260 ft) from its entrance on the Boulevard Montmartre, the passage makes a right angle turn and runs west for a few metres before descending some stairs. It then continues in a northerly direction to its outlet on the rue Grange-Batelière. This was imposed by the irregular pattern of the three plots on which the passage was built. This last part of the passage is particularly narrow, leaving room only for the corridor and a shop.
The Passage des Panoramas opens as a continuation of the passage Jouffroy on the other side of the Boulevard Montmartre. The Passage Verdeau does the same on the other side, after crossing the street from the Grange Batelière.
The passage is covered by a canopy of metal and glass. An ornate clock stucco overlooks the alley. The floor is paved with a geometric pattern composed of white, gray and black squares. The exit from the musée Grévin is located inside the Passage Jouffroy.
History
The Passage Jouffroy was built in 1845 along the line of the Passage des Panoramas in order to capitalize on the popularity of the latter. A private company was formed to manage it, headed by Count Felix de Jouffroy-Gonsans (1791-1863), who gave his name to the passage, and M. Verdeau, who gave his name to the passage that was built as a further extension, the passage Verdeau. The passage was built by architects François Destailleur and Romain de Bourges.
The Passage Jouffroy represents an important stage in the technological evolution of the 19th century and the mastery of iron structures. It is the first Parisian passage built entirely of metal and glass. Only the decorative elements are wooden. It is also the first passage heated by the ground.
In the early 1880s Arthur Meyer, founder of the newspaper Le Gaulois, joined the cartoonist Alfred Grévin to create a gallery of wax figures on a property adjacent to the passage. It was inaugurated on 10 January 1882 and has since taken the name of the musée Grévin. The exit of the museum, decorated with a montage of various characters, is in the passage and contributes in large part to its success. The museum includes a hall of mirrors that was originally housed in the Palais des mirages designed by Eugène Hénard for the Exposition Universelle (1900).
In 1974 the passage was registered as a French historical monument. The passage was completely renovated in 1987 and regained its original paving.
Transport
The closest Metro stations are Grands Boulevards (lines 8 and 9), 100 metres (330 ft) to the east up the Boulevard Montmartre, and Richelieu-Drouot on the same lines 130 metres (430 ft) to the west.

Chinon, Loire, France travel video
Driving through the main shopping lane of the historic town of Chinon, in the Loire, France, gives us a quick preview of the lanes in which we'll soon be taking a little walk. It's primarily a pedestrian zone but our tour van has permission to bring us in here and then drop us off – very convenient for us.
We took a short drive uphill in our tour van and stopped for an overview of the Old Town – a spectacular vista down below, all those slate roofs on top of buildings dating back 400, 500 years old in some cases. There are remains of a large castle up on the hill also overlooking the town.
