London Districts: Richmond
Episode 38 puts the spotlight on the south west London district of 'Richmond'. We mingle with the locals on a nice and shiny Spring day to get a feel of life there and discuss some the reasoning and stories behind how it came to be such a beloved part of London.
Transcription (truncated):
----------------------------------------
Richmond is the principal district inside the massive London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames along with the areas of Kew, Twickenham and Hampton to name a few.
The view we are looking at are the meadows and riverbanks of Petersham, a village on the eastern end of the district and Ham Lands, a nature reserve in the Ham area which crosses over into Richmond.
This district is as large as most inner London boroughs and more than 75% of it is Richmond Park wrapped inside an 8 mile, Grade II listed wall. It's 7 times bigger than Hyde Park, 32 times bigger than Greenwich Park and Green Park can fit inside it 60 times. At 2,300 acres, it is by far the largest of all the Royal parks. About 650 red and fallow deer roam around in there freely with the public and they shape the way the park looks.
Richmond upon Thames is the only borough in Greater London stretching across both sides of our meandering river situated 8 miles away from Charing Cross in transport zone 4.
Until 1501, Richmond was known as Shene. The last two letters were later swapped around to read s-h-e-e-n. Henry VIII's dad, the last English king to win his throne on the field of battle, renamed the place Richmond. The word is adapted from old French Richmont which is simply rich or splendid together with mont which means hill.
So, we're here in Richmond to enjoy this gorgeous day, by the river, fantastic foodie market. We're drinking Rose by Conte Leopardi; our wines are naturally made, just gorgeous drinking. No sugars added on a sunny day out in Richmond close by the Thames.
Richmond is a place that pays homage to its becoming. It includes a free museum which showcases its history and produces the remembrance poppies sold each November for Remembrance Day.
The atmosphere in Richmond is perfectly suited to its infrastructural make-up. On a nice day, the riverside quickly becomes full of people partaking in the beautiful setting by the river. If you plan to see all Richmond has to offer, I would advise renting a bike, a row boat or taking a cruise up and down it.
This place has a reputation for being well looked after and visually pretty. It is also officially the London district with the lowest amount of poverty and has very low-crimes rates. It's no secret that Richmond is the district of choice for several of our most renowned international actors, musicians and athletes. The list is long but you may find the likes of Angelina Jolie, Tom Hardy, Jane Horrocks, Brad Pitt, Mick Jagger and ahem Rick Astley walking past you.
This is the church of St Mary Magdalene, the sinner who Jesus reformed by casting 7 demons out of her. After she told her mates what he did, they also became his followers.
Richmond Theatre opened in 1899 beside Little Green with a performance of 'As You Like It'.
At the heart of the town sits Richmond Green which is almost square open grassland. The locals tell me this is the real treasure of Richmond. They go there to chill out on summer weekends and public holidays. It was traditionally used for archery since the 16th century but is now much better known as one of the places cricket matches began in England. The 92-year-old celebrated broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough actively lives in a house circling this green and describes Richmond as his ''favourite place by a long way''.
Gelateria Danieli was birthed in Richmond making authentic gelato more readily available in the UK. Richmond Bridge is 243 years old, the oldest surviving bridge over the River Thames. Ham house here is the most completely in tact one across Europe from 1610.

Driving Downtown - Richmond Main Street 4K - Virginia USA
Driving Downtown Streets - Main Street - Richmond Virginia USA - Episode 48.
Starting Point: .
Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States.
The site of Richmond had been an important village of the Powhatan Confederacy, and was briefly settled by English colonists from Jamestown in 1609, and in 1610–1611. The present city of Richmond was founded in 1737. It became the capital of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia in 1780. During the Revolutionary War period, several notable events occurred in the city, including Patrick Henry's Give me liberty or give me death speech in 1775 at St. John's Church, and the passage of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom written by Thomas Jefferson. During the American Civil War, Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate States of America. The city entered the 20th century with one of the world's first successful electric streetcar systems, as well as a national hub of African-American commerce and culture, the Jackson Ward neighborhood.
Richmond's economy is primarily driven by law, finance, and government, with federal, state, and local governmental agencies, as well as notable legal and banking firms, located in the downtown area. The city is home to both the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, one of 13 United States courts of appeals, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, one of 12 Federal Reserve Banks. Dominion Resources and MeadWestvaco, Fortune 500 companies, are headquartered in the city, with others in the metropolitan area.
Economy
Law and finance have long been driving forces in the economy.[87] The city is home to both the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, one of 13 United States courts of appeals, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, one of 12 Federal Reserve Banks, as well as offices for international companies such as Genworth Financial, CapitalOne, Philip Morris USA, and numerous other banks and brokerages. Richmond is also home to four of the largest law firms in the United States: Hunton & Williams, McGuireWoods, Williams Mullen, and LeClairRyan. Another law firm with a major Richmond presence is Troutman Sanders, which merged with Richmond-based Mays & Valentine LLP in 2001.
Richmond's revitalized downtown includes the Canal Walk, a new Greater Richmond Convention Center, and expansion on both VCU campuses. A new performing arts center, Richmond CenterStage,[90] opened on September 12, 2009.[91] The complex included a renovation of the Carpenter Center and construction of a new multipurpose hall, community playhouse, and arts education center in parts of the old Thalhimers department store.[92]
Richmond is also fast-becoming known for its food scene, with several restaurants in the Fan, Church Hill, Jackson Ward and elsewhere around the city generating regional and national attention for their fare. Departures magazine named Richmond The Next Great American Food City in August 2014.[93][94] Also in 2014, Southern Living magazine named three Richmond restaurants – Comfort, Heritage and The Roosevelt – among its 100 Best Restaurants in the South,[95] while Metzger Bar & Butchery made its Best New Restaurants: 12 To Watch list.[96] Craft beer and liquor production is also growing in the River City, with twelve micro-breweries in city proper; the oldest is Legend Brewery, founded in 1994. Three distilleries, Reservoir Distillery, Belle Isle Craft Spirits and James River Distillery, were established in 2010, 2013 and 2014, respectively.
Additionally, Richmond is gaining attention from the film and television industry, with several high-profile films shot in the metro region in the past few years, including the major motion picture Lincoln which led to Daniel Day-Lewis's third Oscar, Killing Kennedy with Rob Lowe, airing on the National Geographic Channel and Turn, starring Jamie Bell and airing on AMC. In 2015 Richmond will be the main filming location for the upcoming PBS drama series Mercy Street, which will premiere in Winter 2016. Several organizations, including the Virginia Film Office and the Virginia Production Alliance, along with events like the Richmond International Film Festival and French Film Festival, continue to put draw supporters of film and media to the region.
Top 7 Countries in Asia!
Asia has been my home since 2013, when I moved to South Korea to teach English. Over the last 5 years, I've lived in Vietnam, the Philippines and currently Thailand -- and I've been to almost every country on the beautiful continent of Asia.
Each culture in Asia is very unique -- from religions to traditions, nature, history, cuisines and rituals -- and it provides endless opportunities to learn and discover. But above anything else, THE PEOPLE of Asia are the most hospitable and welcoming as they come.
Admittedly, it has been very hard to choose only 7 of my favorite Asian countries to feature in this video (because I truly love every place for a different reason) -- but when it all comes down to it, these would be my 7 favorite countries on this amazing place called Asia!
THE PHILIPPINES SOUTH KOREA, SINGAPORE, VIETNAM, NEPAL, INDONESIA, JAPAN
What would be your top 7 in Asia? Why? Please comment below and let's get the discussion started!
PS - I kept this video limited to East/South/Southeast Asian countries. While the Middle East and West/Central Asia are technically Asian countries, I consider them very culturally different. Iran and Tajikstan would be on this list if it was all of Asia!

Luanda, Angola (HD)
Luanda, Angola Tourism (HD) - Luanda, Angola Vacations
Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide
Luanda is the capital city of Angola , located in Central-Southern Africa . More than 4 million people live in Luanda. Luanda is a cosmopolitan city, many people fled to the capital during the brutal civil war that destroyed much of the country from 1974-2002. It's located on the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by natural beauty that is somewhat marred by the sprawling townships ( bairros ) and poor living conditions of its inhabitants.
Luanda was founded in 1575 by Portuguese colonists and became a major slaving port. Since then, it has always been the cultural heart of Angola. It's a vibrant place with obvious Portuguese influences, excellent music and nightlife. It's one of the world's most expensive capitals to stay in, due to the fact that Angola is rich in diamonds and oil, so business men abound, but hotel rooms do not.
Portuguese is the main language spoken in Luanda.

TOKYO CAPSULE HOTEL TOUR
It's our first night in Japan ever and we're staying at a CAPSULE HOTEL! The futuristic design gave me galaxy vibes. It felt like we were inside a spaceship floating among the stars.
The pods turned out to be more spacious than expected. I did not get claustrophobic, but everyone's level of comfort varies in enclosed spaces. How about the rest of the experience? Watch the full video to see the detailed tour!
