These locations in South Africa has that little something extra special about them. If you are South African, like us, take time to explore our magnificent country and if you are planning on visiting South Africa we would highly suggest adding them to your itinerary. We encourage travel far and wide in South Africa, not only these locations mentioned, we just happened to talk about out personal favourites and aspiring locations.

00:00 Lion’s Head
No place is better for a sundowner in Cape Town. The 1,5 hour climb rewards you with an unforgettable view, 670 metres above the city.

The most colourful part of Cape Town is home to an interesting mix of muslim-dutch inhabitants.
00:08 Kruger National Park
Kruger is arguably the most famous of all national parks, where you can tick of your Big 5. We especially enjoyed the less visited Klaserie area and the Addo Elephant National Park (where you also get to see Whale Sharks and the Great White – making it the Big 7).
00:12 Kalahari Trails Sanctuary
The cutest experience of all! It’s less about the rescued meerkats you get to see there. There’s actually a bunch of wild meerkats visiting the area avery day who let you get up close and join them on their hole digging business.
00:15 iSimangaliso Wetland Park
In November they lay their eggs, in the South African summer the turtles are hatching. No place better to watch this spectacle than this national park!

It is impossible to buy bad wine in South Africa. And you have to visit at least one winery and do a proper tasting. The winery of Viljoensdrift even offers tastings on a relaxing boat trip – for sure the best way to do it!

You’re into street art? You adore your fixie bike and your triple chai fly macchiato mocca? Drop by Maboneng, the hippest place in South Africa.

You’re into adrenalin? Then stop at the Bloukrans Bridge and jump with Face Adrenalin a whopping 216 meters into the gorge.

You have to see beautiful Cape Town from above. Helicopter rides are quite affordable and we highly recommend doing it. Some tours even go around the cape – even better!

This 1000 meter high mountain right above the city centre of Cape Town is part of the New Seven Wonders of the World. You can walk up here, but we highly recommend taking the cableway. Safe your stamina for the Lion’s Head.

Few things are more impressive than a massive amount of water falling… You agree? Visit this massive waterfall (56 metres) in a gorgeous gorge - haha (240 metres).

Another desert, another sundowner. You won’t get the read beauty of the Kalahari out of your head, we promise! (No matter how much you drink)

It’s rough and might not be as picturesque as Cape Town, but Jo’burg is on the rise and booming. Its skyline is eye-popping – good that some hotel owners knew that and provide lots of rooftop terraces.

One of those places that you hardly find along the road. On our tour we stopped at a beautiful beach right at the river mouth of the Grootrivier. There was noone else. Thankfully.

Yes, it is hard to get there. But the dramatic rock formations are totally worth the exhausting walk down to Noetzie Beach (and back up again).

You’re into surfing and beach life? Then you’ll love the relaxed vibe along the ocean boulevard of Muizenberg. And the colourful Edwardian Beach Houses are quite instagrammy.

South Africa at one side, Namibia to the other. What a cool way of passing through the “green” Kalahari. The great guys from Tutwa Desert Lodge organised this trip for us. Recommended!

Yes, there are penguins in Africa. And they’re awesome. Boulders Beach is a colony where you can even swim with the cutest birds alive – if you pay at the entrance.

Rent a bike and explore Cape Towns surroundings, they are so worth it! Misty Cliffs was our favourite bit, because, well, of the mist. And the cliffs.

Well, you hopefully get there eventually. Though cueing up for a photo behind the famous signboard spoils the romantic a bit. Do it anyway. You’re already there so…
01:00 God’s Window
We have to admit, we were a little bit disappointed by the “Window” itself. A rusty bit of fence in front of a gorge. The walk up there was great though, and it should look incredible with a cloud carpet covering it (like seen in the cult film “The God’s Must be Crazy”).
01:02 Blyde River Canyon
What. A. Canyon. By far the best bit of the Panorama Route for us. Just…well…breathaking. These mighty green mountains, this view, this sunset…Could someone get us another Savanna, please?
The Road to Fraserburg
Life's more interesting roads are the ones that are but feint lines on modern maps. Fraserburg is a small town in the Karoo. I once took the long road back home from Upington to George - and made sure to drive past places that I had never visited. It was just after rare rainfall and the road was soaked. You don't know whether you will reach your destination when you travel like this - but therein lies the adventure.

Cape Town – The legislative capital and seat of Parliament. A world-class city named for its proximity to the Cape of Good Hope. Also within a stone's throw of South Africa's winelands. One of the most beautiful cities in the world, nestled between the sea and Table Mountain, it is a popular summer destination by both domestic tourists and those from abroad.
Durban – Largest city in KwaZulu-Natal, third largest in South Africa and popular coastal holiday destination for South Africans.
Newcastle – 3rd largest city in KwaZulu-Natal, one of the large regional cities in South Africa and Capital of Northern KZN. Famous for Steel Production, Coal Mining, Heavy Industry and is South Africa's Textile Industry Capital.
Johannesburg – The economic heart of Africa and the most common entry point into Southern Africa.
Kimberley -- Capital of the Northern Cape Province. Famous for its diamonds and Big Hole.
Polokwane – Capital of Limpopo (formerly known as Pietersburg) and a good jump off point for visits to the northern parts of the Kruger National Park and Zimbabwe.
Port Elizabeth – Coastal city in the Eastern Cape with Addo Elephant National Park located close by.
Upington – Located in the arid Northern Cape province, this city is a good base when exploring the Kalahari desert and the many national parks located in the Northern Cape.

South Africa is a paradise for anyone interested in natural history. A wide range of species (some potentially dangerous) may be encountered in parks, farms, private reserves and even on the roads.
The Kruger National Park is exceptionally well managed and a favourite tourist destination.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the heart of the Kalahari desert with wide open spaces and hordes of games including the majestic 'Gemsbok'. This is the first park in Africa to cross political borders.
There are also a large number of smaller parks, like the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park, Addo Elephant National Park, Pilanesberg National Park or the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

A Small Town in South Africa: Vanrhynsdorp, Western Cape Province
The small town of Van Rhynsdorp lies about 300 km of Cape Town in South Africa's Western Cape Province. It is on the southern fringe of the arid area that stretches north to Namibia. I visited the town on a quiet weekday morning in June 2016.
I filmed this video with a Sony camera and a DJI Phantom 4 drone.

Pretoria to Cape road trip December 2017
This is my family's road trip from Pretoria to the Western Cape through the Northwest Province and the Northern Cape.
