Ascoli Piceno is a town in central Italy. Piazza del Popolo, an elegant Renaissance square in the center, has travertine paving and the 13th-century Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo, a palace built over Roman ruins. The Civic Picture Gallery, decorated with Murano glass chandeliers, displays paintings by Titian and Carlo Crivelli. Nearby is the Cathedral of St. Emidio, with a crypt featuring elaborate mosaics. With a continuous history dating from the Sabine tribe in the 9th century, Ascoli (as it's known locally) is like the long-lost cousin of ancient Rome and a small Marchigiani village, heavy on history and food. Weary legs will appreciate its lack of hills and all travellers will appreciate its historical riches, excellent pinacoteca (art gallery), trendy bars and restaurants, one of Italy's unsung perfect piazzas and the calorific treat, olive all'ascolana (veal-stuffed fried olives). Welcome to the hippest town in Le Marche.
Ascoli Piceno is the southernmost Province in The Marches. The area slopes down from the Apennines to the sea, passing through the Sibilline Mountains that rise up along the border with Umbria, and creating a formation of hills in the east towards the coastline. This sequence of hills, singing with the changing hues of the orchards and cultivated fields, gently descend from the Apennines to the sea, turning the landscape into a palette of colors.
Its two main centers reflect ancient and modern Ascoli: Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Arringo, respectively. The former was the location of the old forum, the residence of the Captains of the People, and a vibrant commercial center, whereas the latter was once the political heart of town, with its Cathedral and Bishop's Palace. Many of Ascoli's museums are concentrated in Piazza Arringo, also known as ‘Museum Square;’ they include the Pinacoteca Civica (the public art gallery), with its many masterpieces by Titian, Guido Reni and Giuseppe Pellizza da Volped; the Diocesan Museum and the State Archeological Museum. The old town is well-protected by the Tronto River and its offshoot, the Castellano River, while the modern town spans eastward, following the Tronto to the sea.
A tour of the churches here might begin with the Church of San Tommaso, and conclude at Santa Maria Intervineas, passing 14 Romanesque churches and the Baptistery (a common feature in Ascoli Piceno) along the way. Ascoli Piceno also possesses a long-established theatrical tradition, as can be seen from the many theatres built in the 19th Century, for example the Filarmonici, the Ventidio Basso, and the San Francesco di Paola Auditorium.
Geographically, the city occupies a strategic location near Sibillini National Park, the Gran Sasso-Laga National Park and the Sibilla Peak. Not far from the town lies Mt. Ascensione, a destination for pilgrimages during the Middle Ages that, nowadays, retains its sacred atmosphere. Indeed, every year in May, thousands of people ascend the mountain on Ascension Day to carry the Madonna da Polesio to the church at its top.
Moving on from Ascoli to San Benedetto del Tronto, one encounters towns such as Offida, with its 15th-Century fortress. Glimpses of the Middle Ages can be found in Ripatransone, also known as the belvedere del Piceno for its panoramic location. Among the coastal towns, worthy of note are the narrow streets of Grottammare, and the sandy beach at San Benedetto del Tronto.

Our FAVORITE Day in Italy?! + Nate's New Obsession
Le Marche, Italy // Our 52nd country!
Thank you Bob & Gina!!! :)
This was one of our favorite days in Italy! Nate fell in love with driving the Vespa around the Italian countryside. We started by driving to the beach for some local sea food with Bob and Gina, then we got caught in the rain, warmed up in the hot tub, took a nap, took the Vespa to another hill town, ate gelato, and flew the drone a lot!

Marche, Italy Travel
Marche, Italy Travel - Marche is a central region of Italy on the east coast composed of rolling hills and fertile plains at the base of the Apennine mountains. It is bordered by Umbria in the west, Emilia-Romagna to the north, and Abruzzo to the south.
Beautiful Adriatic beaches and ancient towns perched on hilltops, or nestled deep between rolling farmland, give travelers to Le Marche a real taste of central Italy.
Two main highways traveling along the coast facilitate transportation to the larger cities of this and other regions. One of the most valuable parts of Le Marche's lure is driving through the interior, visiting smaller towns and exploring areas where there are virtually no tourists.
Recently a buzz word in Britian and a ex-pat destination for vacation home buying. The Marche has been compared to Tuscany as having all the attributes, with none of the hassles of high prices and large crowds.
Enjoy Your Marche, Italy Travel!

Our food tours are led by our expert tour guide which means you can take a break from being a tourist and enjoy the true Italian way of life. On our Italian food tours you will sample the best local produce and experience the wine tasting, sensational art, scenery and unforgettable Italian gourmet cooking experiences.
We travel through Le Marche and Emilia-Romagna regions of Italy, best known for their unique Italian wine and regional Italian cuisine. Our food tours of Italy are a food and wine lover's paradise. Italian cuisine served over mouth-watering lunches, magnificent dinners and other Italian food and wine experiences.
We begin our Italian food tour in Ascoli Piceno, the heart of the Le Marche region.
Italy wouldn’t be Italy without a culinary food and wine tour. Your Italian food tour starts in the hills behind Ascoli Piceno. We visit the stunning Italian village of Offida, home to skilled artisans and local Italian winemakers. We call into a local enoteca for an Italian wine tasting of Le Marche’s spectacular wines. Here we will introduce you to the heavenly Passerina and Pecorino Italian wines.
By exclusive invitation, we then travel to an exquisite winery at Ripatransone where we experience some truly exceptional boutique Italian wines. Lunch is served by the seaside at Grottammare where we sample the impressive local Italian dishes prepared by a very talented international chef.
Truffles are used by the best chefs around the world, and our food tours of Italy take you to a secret location in the Sibillini Mountains to meet a local Italian truffle hunter and his dogs. We then sample these highly prized truffles in the little Italian village of Montefortino.
The first of our Italian cooking classes commences with a walk through the bustling local markets in Ascoli Piceno. It’s here we gather our ingredients for our Italian cooking class at a local Italian villa.
Exclusive to Carolinasusi Italia Tours, we meet one of the surviving members of the local aristocracy as she takes us on a tour of her historic biological garden. This is followed by a visit to a frantoio where we will see how the precious Italian olive oil is processed.
Departing Ascoli Piceno, our guided food tours of Italy travel to beautiful Bologna, the Italian food capital of this magnificent region.
In Bologna we combine sightseeing with the food markets, and enjoy tasting some of the local Italian wines. This is also the region where Lambrusco wine is produced
On to Comacchio, known as “little Venice” due to its network of canals. Comacchio provides Italian culinary connoisseurs with an opportunity to sample the local fish delicacy, fried eel.
As a further introduction to the Italian food of Bologna, we head back to the local markets to collect the ingredients for our second Italian cooking class.
Modena is renowned for its production of the highly prized “aceto balsamico tradizionale”. We visit an artisan who makes the authentic balsamic vinegar. This region of Italy can’t be seen without visiting the home of another famous Italian icon, the Ferrari!
Our food tour of Italy then travels to Parma for the world famous Parmigiano cheese. Our small group tour then heads to a Prosciutto di Parma producer in the Valle di Castrignano.
On our final day, we take you to the UNESCO protected Renaissance city of Ferrara. Our food tours of Italy would not be complete without an opportunity to experience one last wine tasting featuring the local Italian Lambrusco wine!
