Life in Goa - Rivona Caves | Part 2 | Goa Vlog.
And we finally arrive! To the place history buffs, adventure seekers, experience seekers, and wanderers find themselves landing- The Rivona Caves!
The entire journey took us about 2.5 hours with a few stops in between. Along the way we passed by luscious greenery until we reached the heart of Rivona, in Quepem Taluka.
The Rivona Caves of Goa has no entry fee and a little digging up of information has to be done before visiting the place to understand its rich origin.
The caves are closely located near (that temple's name), and is of Buddhist origin dating back to the 6th century AD. Once a massive laterite rock, now stand a carved out cave. The Buddhist origin is currently a matter of speculation. However, during the era of Chandragupta and Kadamba around the 11th century, Rivona, which had the presence of hot springs, fresh flowing water and dense forests, was a hideaway for the Buddhists following the decline of Buddhism. They say this cave was built for their hide out with abundance of food and water nearby in a thick forest.
There is a pitha inside, possibly used by the Buddhist teachers and gurus for teaching and meditation. To the left of the caves, you will see rock-cut steps that lead to a natural pond. This cave is also known as the Pandava caves after the popular belief thats says they took refuge here during their exile. Certain drawings of animals and birds on the rocks can be found, and is considered to be dated back from the time much before even the birth of Christ. The fresh hot springs that must have drawn the Buddhits and Pandavas to this spot still exist and within a radius of 2 square km of the Rivona caves.
Curdi - Hauntingly Beautiful Goan Village that emerges once a year
Curdi is a ghost town in making. It is a village that was displaced for making way for the Salaulim Dam. It remains submerged in dam water most of the year. Only in May, just before the monsoons, the village emerges for a while and you can visit it. In between water bodies, you see villages that were living just about 35 years ago. You can see houses, a temple that is still living, Tulsi Vrindavan and public spaces like the stage for the performances.
Curdi is hauntingly beautiful. It makes you feel happy and sad at the same time. The fact that it allows you a very small window to visit adds to its charms.
