Runcu is a commune in Gorj County, Oltenia, Romania. It is situated on the foot of Vâlcan Mountains, 17 km West of Târgu Jiu. The commune is composed of seven villages: Bâlta, Bâltișoara, Dobrița, Răchiți, Runcu, Suseni and Valea Mare. Runcu village was first mentioned in a document issued in 1486 by Vlad Călugărul. The dominant class of Wallachia maintained interests in the area during most of the Middle Ages. Lake Vidraru is an artificial lake in Romania. It was created in 1965 by the construction of the Vidraru Dam on the Argeș River. It lies in the shadow of the Făgăraș Mountains. A village lies submerged at the bottom of this lake. Vidraru Lake is a reservoir lake created in 1965 on the Arges River for Hydroelectricity. It has 465 million cubic metres of water, with a length of 10.3 km and a width of 2.2 km, thus accumulating a total area of 870 hectares and maximum depth of 155 metres. An underground power station is situated in a massive Cetatuia to a depth of 104 metres and can provide annual energy production of 400 GWh. Târgu Jiu is the capital of Gorj County in the Oltenia region of Romania. With a total population of 78,553 peeps, Târgu Jiu is situated on the Southern Sub-Carpathians, on the banks of the river Jiu.
Constantin Brâncuși (who had lived here as a boy) created few large sculptures that are now the main tourist attractions in Târgu Jiu: The Table of Silence, The Gate of the Kiss, and The Endless Column.

WINTER FUN IN ROMANIA

The video is a compilation of clips taken from 5th March - 14 March 2015. We were able to visit quite a couple of cities and enjoyed the company of family, relatives and friends in a short period of time. The places that we visited were Ploiești, Bucharest, Sinaia Mountain and Brașov.

Defile of Jiu National Park, Romania

The park covers 111 km² and protects the quasi-intact, old-growth forests on the abrupt slopes of Jiu Defile and the rare flora and fauna in the valley. The river flows betwen Vâlcan and Parâng Mountains and the valley connects Transylvania and Oltenia.

The 31 km long railway is the most spectacular in Romania was built in two stages, first between 1923-1944 (8 km) and the the second between 1945-1948, the so-called Building site of the Youth a propaganda program of the newly installed communist power, where people of unhealthy social origin where working voluntary to show their adhesion to the new social order. The railway has 8 large bridges totalizing 730 m, 27 coastal viaducts totalizing 1000 m, many smaller bridges totalizing 436m and 39 tunnels totalizing 7880 m.
