(EN) Grande Chartreuse is the head monastery of the Carthusian order. It is located in the Chartreuse Mountains, north of the city of Grenoble, in the commune of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse (Isère), France. Originally, the château belonged to the See of Grenoble. In 1084, Saint Hugh gave it to hermit Saint Bruno and his followers who founded the Carthusian Order.
Today, visitors are not permitted at Grand Chartreuse, and motor vehicles are prohibited on the surrounding roads. However, a museum of the Carthusian order and the lives of its monks and nuns stands about two kilometers away.
The order is supported by the sales of Chartreuse liqueur which has been popular in France and later around the world since the early 1700s.
English poet Matthew Arnold wrote one of his finest poems, Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse, while briefly staying at the monastery around 1850. The quiet, serenity, and monastic calm became, for him, the susurrations of a dying world which contrasted with what he saw as the violent emerging age of machinery. Grand Chartreuse was also described in the 1850 revision of William Wordsworth's The Prelude, Book VI, lines 416-88 (Wordsworth visited the monastery in 1790), and John Ruskin's Praeterita.
The monastery was closed in 1903 by the French state. The monks found refuge in Italy until 1929, but returned in 1940 when it was reopened.
A documentary film about the monastery entitled Into Great Silence, directed by Philip Gröning, received acclaim on the film festival circuit following its release in 2005.

Places to see in ( Avignon - France ) Eglise Saint Pierre
Places to see in ( Avignon - France ) Eglise Saint Pierre
Located right in the center of town, a stone's throw from the Aubanel printing museum, the Place Saint Pierre, cobbled with shingle stones, is the church square for the parish church that bears the same name.
Saint-Pierre had been rebuilt in 1385, thanks to a donation from the Cardinal Pierre de Près. Unfortunately we cannot enter and admire the panelling, the altarpiece, the pulpit or the paintings, one of which is the Adoration of the Shepherds by Simon de Chalons. But its façade, in flamboyant Provençal Gothic, is the most embellished of all of Avignon's churches and its doors alone merit a look.
In solid walnut, 4 metres high, they open into the only nave of the church. The pier that separates the two doors has a remarkable sculpted canopy under which stands a lovely virgin with child attributed to Jean Péru.
Michel Lopis, a rich merchant, paid for the doors of Saint-Pierre. Antoine Volard, woodworker, a native of the Dauphiné, was hired to build them, for 60 gold crowns with the king's hallmark . Each leaf of the doors has two porticos, with figures in relief under an arch in three dimensions.

Quadcopter over Monastery of La Grande Chartreuse (French Alps)
ENGLISH / FRANCAIS :
ENGLISH :
This video is the second of a serial that I shoot with my Gaui 500X Quadcopter during the Toussaint vacations, which took place, in France, in the early November 2012.
It shows the Monastery of La Grande Chartreuse , in the french Alps.
It is the head monastery of the Carthusian order, well known for the production of the...Chartreuse liquor (in fact, they are not making it anymore, except two monks, in a factory. They are praying and working...).
The building of this monastery started during the 17th Century (in 1676). It is located in the Saint Pierre de Chartreuse district, Chartreuse mountains range (between Grenoble and Chambery cities), French Alps, South-East of France.
The first monastery was built by Saint Bruno during the 11th century (1084) a little bit higher in the mountain.

Of course, as a rookie RC pilot, many things have to be improved in my shootings...but it's a step by step approach...
At 2:10, you can discover the Guiers vif torrent waterfalls, in the background.
At 4:00, I decided not to fly over water...even if I have some regrets.
Starting at 4:03, you can see the Chalet du Cirque, an hotel / restaurant / seminar accommodation. As far as i know, it's for sale. If you want to get information about it, here's their website :

L'abbaye de Hautecombe (Savoie - France)
(EN) Hautecombe Abbey (Latin Altacumba, Altæcumbæum) is a former Cistercian monastery, later a Benedictine monastery, in Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille near Aix-les-Bains in Savoy, France. For centuries it was the burial place of the members of the House of Savoy. It is visited by 150,000 tourists yearly.
The origins of Hautecombe lie in a religious community which was founded about 1101 in a narrow valley (or combe) near Lake Bourget by hermits from Aulps Abbey, near Lake Geneva. In about 1125 it was transferred to a site on the north-western shore of the lake under Mont du Chat, which had been granted to it by Amadeus, Count of Savoy, who is named as the founder; and shortly afterwards it accepted the Cistercian Rule from Clairvaux. The first abbot was Amadeus de Haute-Rive, afterwards Bishop of Lausanne. Two daughter-houses were founded from Hautecombe at an early date: Fossanova Abbey (afterwards called For Appio), in the diocese of Terracina in Italy, in 1135, and San Angelo de Petra, close to Constantinople, in 1214.
It has sometimes been claimed, but as often disputed, that Pope Celestine IV and Pope Nicholas III were monks at Hautecombe.
Apart from its exceptionally beautiful location, the chief interest of Hautecombe is that it was for centuries the burial-place of the Counts and Dukes of Savoy. Count Humbert III, known as Blessed, and his wife Anne were interred there in the latter part of the 12th century; and about a century later Boniface of Savoy, Archbishop of Canterbury (1245--1270), son of Count Thomas I of Savoy, was buried in the sanctuary of the abbey church. He had come out from England with King Edward I to accompany him in a crusade, but died at the castle of St. Helena in Savoy.
The abbot Anthony of Savoy, a son of Charles Emmanuel I, was also buried there in 1673.
The abbey was restored (in a debased style) by one of the dukes about 1750, but it was secularized and sold in 1792, when the French entered Savoy, and was turned into a china-factory. King Charles Felix of Sardinia purchased the ruins in 1824, had the church re-constructed by the Piedmontese architect Ernest Melano in an exuberant Gothic-Romantic style, and restored it to the Cistercian Order. He and his queen, Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies, are buried in the Belley chapel, which forms a kind of vestibule to the church. Some 300 statues and many frescoes adorn the interior of the church, which is 215 feet (66 m) long, with a transept 85 feet (26 m) wide. Most of the tombs are little more than reproductions of the medieval monuments.
The Cistercians re-settled the abbey from Turin, but the Italian monks soon left, and were replaced by others from Sénanque Abbey, who remained until about 1884. The premises were taken over by the Benedictines of Marseilles Priory in 1922, but in 1992 the monks left for Ganagobie Abbey in the Alpes de Haute Provence, and the buildings are now administered by the Communauté du Chemin-Neuf, an ecumenical and charismatic Roman Catholic group. Chartreuse, Isere, includes St. Hugues Church with Artist Arcabas, French Alps
Chartreuse is a small region about 30 minutes outside of Chambery in Isere. There are several quaint, mountain villages which are worth driving through, but what's even more beautiful is the scenery of the mountains, hills, forests and pastures. It may be the most gorgeous scenery I've seen yet and we frequent the area on our motorbike. The main little town is called St. Pierre du Chartreuse - near the town are the museum and the Abby, which was first settled in the 1100's by a Monk who came to the area for isolation and solitude. The Abby is still occupied by monks who have taken an oath of silence. Visitors are not usually allowed. Their income comes from the liquor they make which is also called 'Chartreuse.' It's quite famous in France and has an herbal taste, but frankly, I don't care for it. But what is fun is taking a tour of where they make it and other liquors in Voiron, which is a 45 minute drive away. The tour includes one tasting of their liquors and some of the fruit flavored ones are excellent. For me however the best place to stop in St. Pierre du Chartreuse is the Saint Hugues Church. It is filled with contemporary religious art by Arcabas and is glorious to see. Most French people in Chambery don't even know about the church so this is truly a wonderful secret to discover.

Quadcopter over Chartreuse mountains, French Alps
ENGLISH / FRANCAIS :
ENGLISH :
This video is the third of a serial that I shoot with my Gaui 500X Quadcopter during the Toussaint vacations, which took place, in France, in the early November 2012.
This flight was done in the Entremont desert, located in the Entremont-le-Vieux district, Chartreuse mountains range (between Grenoble and Chambery cities), French Alps, South-East of France.
It was unusual to find snow there in the early November, it was following a strong snow event, a few days before.
At 1:21, you can discover, on the right, the Mount Granier.
Through the Granier pass, you can see, in the background, the Mont Blanc (White mount), highest mountain in Europe (4 810 m / 15 780 ft), located ... 90 km (55 miles) away.
The mountain which can be seen at 3:03 is called the Mont Outheran.
If you want to get informations about this cross country (45 km) and alpine skiing station, have a look to this website (only in French):

MUSIC : Ly-O-Lay-Ale-Loya ((The Counterclockwise Circle Dance), by Kichwas Runa.
Even if these mountains aren't located in the US wild west, I think that many landscapes of this area look similar to some of Utah. That's why I choose this beautiful and inspiring music. Even the eagle which can be heard on the music...could be heard over the Chartreuse mountains.

FRANCAIS :
