Swiss Railway Journeys - The Chemins De Fer Du Jura
Travel with us for a journey along the scenic network of lines in western Switzerland operated by the Chemins de fer du Jura. This is a particularly lovely region of the country and the way passes through lush pasture and thick woodland.
We begin our exploration at La Chaux-de-Fonds, with a visit to the fascinating Horological museum. On our way through the region we pause at Les Bois to admire the local Franches Montagnes horses, herds of which can be seen all over the surrounding countryside. Most of our journey lies through Canton Jura, Switzerland's newest administrative region. We make a diversion to explore the line from Tavannes to Le Noirmont, the original part of the network, and visit the verdant valley of the river Doubs, which divides Switzerland from France.
At Saignelégier we pause to enjoy the Marché Concours, a large horse festival which takes place here every year, and thrill to the excitement of Roman chariot racing. Further along the route we see a preserved steam loco in glorious action and enjoy the wild-west bandit attack made on a party enjoying an excursion on a historic electric set.
At Glovelier we continue our exploration of the CJ network and travel to Porrentruy via the picturesque old village of St. Ursanne. A trip along the CJ branch line to Bonfol ends our exploration of this particularly scenic region.

Lauterbrunnen Switzerland | Switzerland's Heaven!!!
Lauterbrunnen is situated in one of the most impressive trough valleys in the Alps, between gigantic rock faces and mountain peaks. With its 72 thundering waterfalls, secluded valleys, colourful alpine meadows and lonely mountain inns, the #LauterbrunnenValley is one of the biggest nature conservation areas in #Switzerland.
The very name ‘Lauter Brunnen’ (‘many fountains’) suggests the magnificence of this landscape. There are 72 waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, the most famous being the #StaubbachFalls. Plunging almost 300 metres from an overhanging rock face, they are one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in #Europe. In 1779, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the valley, and was inspired by the roaring waters to write his well-known poem ‘Spirit song over the waters’ (#SpringSongOverTheWaters).
Lauterbrunnen was first mentioned in 1240 as in claro fonte, a #Romance-language place name meaning clear spring. By 1253 it was known to #German speakers as #Liuterbrunnon which by 1268 had the alternate spelling of Luterbrunnen. While the meaning of brunnen is undoubtedly spring or fountain, there is some dispute about the meaning of lauter: Some translate it as clear, clean or bright while others translate it as many or louder.
The river #WeisseLütschine flows through Lauterbrunnen and overflows its banks about once a year. The source of the river comes from melting snow high in the mountains, thus making it a very pure and clean source of water. Another deafening natural phenomenon are the #TrümmelbachFalls in the ‘Black Monk’ mountain, hidden behind mighty rock faces. Up to 20,000 litres of water per second cascade over the ten #GlacierFalls from a total height of about 200 metres. This spectacle can only be reached in summer by tunnel lift.
Between 1981 and 2010 Lauterbrunnen had an average of 136.5 days of rain or snow per year and on average received 1,207 mm (47.5 in) of precipitation. The #wettest month was July during which time Lauterbrunnen received an average of 144 mm (5.7 in) of rain or snow. During this month there was precipitation for an average of 13.8 days. The month with the most days of precipitation was June, with an average of 14.1, but with only 133 mm (5.2 in) of rain or snow. The #driest month of the year was October with an average of 78 mm (3.1 in) of precipitation over 9.5 days.
