Swiss Railway Journeys - The Chemins De Fer Du Jura
Travel with us for a journey along the scenic network of lines in western Switzerland operated by the Chemins de fer du Jura. This is a particularly lovely region of the country and the way passes through lush pasture and thick woodland.
We begin our exploration at La Chaux-de-Fonds, with a visit to the fascinating Horological museum. On our way through the region we pause at Les Bois to admire the local Franches Montagnes horses, herds of which can be seen all over the surrounding countryside. Most of our journey lies through Canton Jura, Switzerland's newest administrative region. We make a diversion to explore the line from Tavannes to Le Noirmont, the original part of the network, and visit the verdant valley of the river Doubs, which divides Switzerland from France.
At Saignelégier we pause to enjoy the Marché Concours, a large horse festival which takes place here every year, and thrill to the excitement of Roman chariot racing. Further along the route we see a preserved steam loco in glorious action and enjoy the wild-west bandit attack made on a party enjoying an excursion on a historic electric set.
At Glovelier we continue our exploration of the CJ network and travel to Porrentruy via the picturesque old village of St. Ursanne. A trip along the CJ branch line to Bonfol ends our exploration of this particularly scenic region. (recorded in 2001)
Les Eplatures for
Les Eplatures is the highest IFR airport in Switzerland, located in the beautiful Jura. A McDonald's is just located next to the airport, so it's become a tradition to get a $100 burger there. No better place to eat then between five and seven thousand feet with the alps as a backdrop :)
