Switzerland's Jungfrau Lakes & Glaciers - Grindelwald First to Grosse Scheidegg
Switzerland – The Jungfrau Region Pt.2 – Lakes & Glaciers Grindelwald First to Grosse Scheidegg
Switzerland’s Jungfrau Region of Berner Oberland doesn’t disappoint. It’s simply WOW!!! Switzerland renders you speechless – we can’t remember a holiday where we said “Wow” so often!! It was almost embarrassing!!!
We defy you not to get frothy about the dreamy landscapes, geological wonders and the superb Swiss engineering. The Seilbahns (cable cars) effortlessly deliver you upon high then it’s up to you to decide what you’d like to do.
Why come to the Jungfrau Region of Switzerland? Because it shares the distinction, with the Valais Region, as home to the tallest and most vast glacial region in Switzerland. I was wowed by the immense awe inspiring Aletsch Glacier and assumed that was that – the best-of-the-best, but no, the Jungfrau Region delivered equal awesomeness!!! On a more serious note these glaciers are retreating with global warming. Sadly some of the lower glaciers are said to disappear within the next twenty years and the flow-on affect to local climate is impacting now. So if they float your boat, it’s time to get to the Jungfrau Region now.
Join us as we take the cable car from Grindelwald to First. Picture postcard chalets, replete with red geraniums flowerboxes, nestle into the verdant green slopes and the clanging of cowbells drifts into the cable-car from far below.
Soon they are forgotten as the Swiss Alps, and their glaciers, take front-and-centre stage. Rick Steves reckons this is where Heidi would have lived. Rick Steves is only partly right. Think it's a tie between Heidi OR Bollywood (depending on your perspective!!). We walked around the magnificently engineered First Cliff Walk, with a wedding in full swing. Soon it would be congested. The tourists arrive early here.
Next stop is the magical Bachalpsee. Today the water calmly mirrored the “Imperial Crown” – the Finsteraarhorn (4,274m/14,022ft), the Fiescherhorner (4,049M) and the Schreckhorn at 4,078m (a.k.a. Mt Terror). The Bollywood blockbuster DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) was filmed nearby – catnip for Indian tourists.
Japanese tourists are equally smitten with Switzerland – they marry here. They have great taste!! Who wouldn’t want an infinity view of the Swiss Alps for their wedding photos. The Swiss Alps could almost eclipse a bride!!
From Bachalpsee we head via the Hiendertellti (the secret mountain corridor behind Grindelwald’s mighty mountains) toward Wart.
Switzerland's like a chocolate sampler box –the world's best scenery seem thoughfully assembled in one ‘box’. This walk was further confirmation.
We pass Lake Hagelseewli, cold and eerie without the sun’s rays. Next up is the stunningly situated Witche’s Lake – Lake Haxeseewil. Today it’s all gleaming aquamarine loveliness. It’s equally as stunning as Scotland’s Coire Mhic Fhearchair.
Moving on towards Wart through a Swiss size scree slope we stop for lunch at a plateau affording 360 degree views of the surrounding Alps, Schwarzhorn, Wildgarst and the Hiendertellti corridor.
The trail up to Schwarzhorn is an Alpine one, requiring mountaineering equipment. We’ll take the easier white-red-white track around the base of Schwarzhorn.
Wart, sitting between Schwarzhorn and Wildgarst, will be the highest point of the day at 2,704m / 8,871ft. From here it’s a lot of downhill. We manoeuvre around the Blau Gletscherli (Blue Glacier) – now educed to a thin ice sheet.
From our own hanging valley we gaze into the glaciers surrounding the impressive Wetterhorn (3,692m).
The trail is quiet at the end of the season – it will close soon.
We must keep a steady pace to ensure we catch the last bus from Grosse Scheidegg back to Grindelwald.
Since we’ve made good time we reward our feet with a DIY foot spa in the local stream before lacing up for the road section of the walk. The sound of gushing water is eclipsed by a sonic boom!!! of a Swiss fighter jet. Boys with toys, lol!!! They take defence here very seriously (even hide their fighter jets inside mountains).
On the bus we reflect on another stellar day out. Switzerland’s simply WOW & WOW.
Another one for the bucket list, for sure.
Enjoy.
Happy & safe travels

The pedestrian streets are narrow and lined with shops, restaurants, hotels and inns near the rail station. Homes and houses are scattered throughout, some perched on the lower edge of the mountains.
For a very long time Switzerland and the Alps have been among the most beautiful regions, sought by millions of tourists from all parts of the world. They display the greatest mountains and valleys in their grandest form and have a special charm that is most seductive.
Zermatt is considered Switzerland's most popular visitor destination getting about 2 million visitors a year. So depending on the time of day or the season, this village could get pretty crowded. You might want to come in the shoulder season. Month of May is perfect, if it's late May, especially. Early May you might run into snow on the trails and that gets in the way of your hiking. Late May and early September are pretty much the perfect times to be here.
Zermatt is well-equipped to handle a large number of visitors they get, with 130 hotels in the main village area, not to mention bed-and-breakfasts and other hotels in nearby towns. Many people just come for the day, you can arrive by train in the morning, walk around, although that's not recommended. There's so much to see and do in Zermatt you really want to spend a couple of nights – at least two or even three nights would be very nice. They have got 70 ski lifts if you're a skier, especially in the wintertime they're all functioning. In the summer as we have seen up on the Klein Matterhorn you can ski all year round. And naturally this is heaven for serious rock climbers there. You'll see people with their ropes and spikes in pickaxes walking down the main lane heading for the hills.
खज्जियार Khajjiar-Mini Switzerland Of India-Chamba,Himachal.

Mini Switzerland.
On 07-07-1992, Mr. Willy t. Blazer, Vice Counselor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland in India brought Khajjiar on the world tourism map by christening it Mini Switzerland. He also put a sign board of a yellow Swiss hiking footpath showing Khajjiar's distance from the Swiss capital Berne-6194 km. Khajjiar is among the 160 locations in the world that bear topographical resemblance with Switzerland. The Counselor also took from Khajjiar a stone which will form part of a stone collage around the Swiss Parliament to remind the visitors of Khajjiar as Mini Switzerland of India. It is about 6,500 feet (2,000 m) above sea level in the foothills of the Dhauladhar ranges of the Western Himalayas and snowy peaks can be seen in the distance. It is part of the Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary.
Khajjiar is often reffered to as Gulmarg of Himachal Pradesh.
.Khajjiar is a hill station in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, India, located approximately 24 km from Dalhousie. Khajjiar sits on a small plateau with a small stream-fed lake in the middle that has been covered over with weeds.
Khajjiar can be reached from Dalhousie and Chamba, the nearest major town and hill station, by bus/Taxi in an hour or so. It has a rare combination of three ecosystems: lake, pasture and forest, all in one place.
There is a Hotel and some cottages run by HP Tourism at Khajjiar where the tourists can stay . Besides there are two rest houses one each of P.W.D. and Forest Deptt. A couple of nice private hotels have also come up.
Travel
Most tourists travel to Khajjiar by private or rented vehicles. Bus service is also available to and from Khajjiar.
Places of Interest
The best entertainment in Khajjiar is to walk around the lake or to go for long walks in the thick pine forests. Children enjoy this place because of the freedom of movement and the slopy terrain which permits them to roll down to the lake without getting hurt. Another attraction like any other hill station is horse riding.Dhauladhar mountains:Dense deodars, pines and lush green meadows are characteristic of Khajjiar. Since Khajjiar is situated at the base of the Dhauladhar mountains, the tourists here can get panoramic views of the mountains
Khajjiar Lake: Khajjiar Lake is a small lake, surrounded by saucer-shaped lush green meadow and a floating island. The dense growth of weed called 'vacha' has made its earth spongy. Now the banks stand covered by a thick layer of earth, formed by the years of dust settling down on the weeds.
Khajjinag temple: A little away from the lake is the temple of Khajji Nag belonging to 12th C. AD. In the mandapa of the temple one can see the images of the Pandavas and the defeated Kaurvas hanging from the roof of the circumambulatory path. The sanctum of the temple has been beautifully carved from wood. This temple is dedicated to snake(Nāga) worship and there are some snake idols inside.
