Gallipoli is a southern Italian town and comune in the province of Lecce, in Apulia. The town of Gallipoli is located by the Ionian Sea, on the west coast of the Salentina Peninsula. The town of Gallipoli is divided into two parts, the modern and the old city. The new town includes all the newest buildings including a skyscraper. The old town is located on a limestone island, linked to the mainland by a bridge built in the 16th century. The municipality of Gallipoli borders with Alezio, Galatone, Matino, Sannicola and Taviano. Gallipoli counts the hamlets (frazioni) of Baia Verde, Lido Conchiglie, Lido San Giovanni, Rivabella and Torre del Pizzo.
Nearest airports are Brindisi, 88 kilometres (55 mi), and Bari, 200 kilometres (120 mi). Gallipoli can be reached from both of them via a modern freeway, the state road 101. By train, Gallipoli is connected to Lecce by the Ferrovie Sud-Est.
In past times the economy of Gallipoli was based on the international wine and oil commerce. Nowadays its most important activities are based on fishing and tourism. Tourism is enjoyable throughout the year, due to the mild climate. Numerous are also the celebrations (civil and religious). These include the Carnival, Easter and all the parades, Sant'Agata, and the Santa Cristina celebrations in July. Gallipoli also boasts a very recently built harbour for private boats, located just steps from the bottom of the main Corso Roma. The summer season starts in May and ends in October, when the weather is almost invariably hot and clear.

Angevine-Aragonese Castle, built in the 13th century by the Byzantines. It was largely remade under the Angevines and the Aragonese, who added a polygonal wall fortified with round towers. The main additions were carried on by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, who worked for King Alfonso II of Naples. In 1522 an eastern bastion, known as Rivellino, was built which is defended by waters on three sides.
14th century walls (renewed by the Spaniards in the 16th century). Originally they had 12 towers or bastions.
Baroque cathedral of Sant'Agata (17th century). It has a richly decorated façade in carparo, a local limestone, with niches featuring statues of saints. The interior is on the Latin cross plan, with Baroque altars, including a polychrome high altar by Cosimo Fanzago.
Church of St. Francis of Paola (1621)
Church of St. Francis of Assisi, built in the 13th century but renovated several times later. It is home to a stone nativity scene by Stefano da Putignano (late 16th century)
Church of San Domenico al Rosario (late 17th century), annexed to a former Dominican convent.
Church of the Holy Crucifix (1750)
Church of Santa Maria della Purità (1661). The richly decorated interior houses, at the marble high altar, a canvas by Luca Giordano depicting the Madonna della Purità between st. Joseph and St. Francis of Assisi.
Greek Fountain (16th century), once believed to date to the 3rd century BC. It has bas-reliefs with mythological figures and, on the other façade, the insignia of Charles III of Spain.
Palazzo Pirelli (16th century), with mythological-theme decorations in the vault of former entrance archway which was converted to a pharmacy in the 19th century.
Church of San Pietro dei Samari, outside the city. It was built in by a Crusader knight, Ugo di Lusignano in 1148.

Ottavo giorno del nostro Puglia on the road. Iniziamo la giornata come sempre con un bel bagno ed un pò di sole, poi ci siamo diretti verso Nardò, una piccola città in provincia di Lecce, che vanta una straordinaria ricchezza di palazzi, chiese, cappelle e singoli dettagli architettonici, rendendola una delle città più importanti del barocco leccese. Subito dopo siamo arrivati a Porto Cesareo. Località molto turistica sempre della provincia di Lecce, situata sulla costa ionica della penisola salentina. Sede dell'area naturale marina protetta Porto Cesareo. Finita la visita, siamo arrivati nell'ultima tappa della nostra vacanza, la tappa n° 23, Gallipoli !Gallipoli è una cittadina sulla costa pugliese. Il centro storico, situato su un'isola al largo, ospita luoghi di culto come la Cattedrale di Sant'Agata, con la sua facciata riccamente decorata. Poco distante, la Chiesa di Santa Maria della Purità presenta un pavimento in maiolica. Pur facendo parte del Castello di Gallipoli, la Torre del Rivellino è indipendente dall'edificio principale. Dall'altra parte del ponte, sulla terraferma, si trova la Fontana Greca, risalente al Rinascimento.
Torniamo a Palermo con il cuore pieno di gioia, ribadendo che, viaggiare per il mondo è meraviglioso, ma ricordando sempre, che anche casa nostra merita l'attenzione e la curiosità di ognuno di noi.

Dating back to as early as 7000BC, Matera is known for its ancient cave dwellings. While people inhabited these caves until as recently as the 1950s, the Italian government forcefully relocated most of the population of the Sassi to areas of the developing modern city.

Campania Region, Italy Travel - Campania (Italian pronunciation: [kamˈpaːnja]) is a region in southern Italy. The region has a population of around 5.8 million people, making it the second-most-populous region of Italy; its total area of 13,595 km² makes it the most densely populated region in the country.[1] Located on the Italian Peninsula, with the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, the small Flegrean Islands and Capri are also administratively part of the region.
Throughout much of its history Campania has been at the centre of Western Civilisations most significant entities. The area was colonised by Ancient Greeks and was within Magna Græcia, until the Roman Republic began to dominate. During the Roman era the area was highly respected as a place of culture by the emperors, where it balanced Greco-Roman culture. The area had many duchies and principalities during the Middle Ages, in the hands of the Byzantine Empire and some Lombards.
It was under the Normans that the smaller independent states were brought together as part of a sizable European kingdom, known as the Kingdom of Sicily, before the mainland broke away to form the Kingdom of Naples. It was during this period that especially elements of Spanish, French and Aragonese culture touched Campania. Later the area became the central part of the Two Sicilies under the Bourbons, until the Italian unification of 1860 when it became part of the new state Italy.
The capital city of Campania is Naples. Campania is rich in culture, especially in regards to gastronomy, music, architecture, archeological and ancient sites such as Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum. The name of Campania itself is derived from Latin, as the Romans knew the region as Campania felix, which translates into English as fertile countryside. The rich natural sights of Campania make it highly important in the tourism industry, especially along the Amalfi Coast, Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri.[2]

Campania has an area of 13,595 sq km and a coastline of 350 km on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Campania is famous for its gulfs (Naples, Salerno and Policastro) as well as for three islands (Capri, Ischia and Procida).
Four other regions border Campania; Lazio to the northwest, Molise to the north, Apulia (Puglia) to the northeast and Basilicata to the east.
The mountainous area is fragmentised in separate massifs, rarely reaching 2,000 metres (Miltetto of 2,050 m), whereas close to the coast there are volcanic massifs: Vesuvio (1,277 m) and Campi Flegrei.
The climate is typically Mediterranean along the coast, whereas in the inner zones it is more continental, with low temperatures in winter. 51% of the total area is hilly, 34% mountainous and the remaining 15% is made up of plains. There is a high seismic risk in the area of the region.
