Padua, Italy, travel in the Old Town
Padua in northern Italy is one of those great old cities with a beautifully preserved historic center. The pedestrian zone has got arcades and shops, bars and cafés, cobblestone and broad piazzas, and lots of people out having a good time. We say Padua, Italians say Padova. In this episode we are going to focus more on people and the street life rather than historic sites like churches or museums. We will be showing you some great old buildings and suggesting a nice walking route that will get you right around through the historic center of Padua and will take you into the university district. Padua makes a very convenient day trip from nearby Venice, which is just 24 miles away – it's about a half hour train ride. We visit the main piazzas and Via Roma, a wonderful walking street. It really is the main pedestrian lane of Padua, and while it's not a piazza it functions as one because there are no cars allowed, so it's long and narrow as a street but filled with people.
The town has a wonderful historic center with pedestrian lanes and the loggia, with all of these arcades and columns. It's very pedestrian-friendly and bicycle-friendly. People are pedaling all over the place here, and there's lots of cafés, naturally, sidewalk cafés, people eating and drinking in the evening especially the young people, who come out about 6 o'clock to 7 o'clock and have a spritz, or a beer, have a wine at the café.
he grand Palazzo della Ragione is surrounded by three primary piazzas - delle Erbe, dei Fruit and dei Signori. This is the heart of Padua.
We found some sort of a street party going on. Turns out they are celebrating graduation day at the Padua medical school. It's the oldest medical school in the world, first founded with the University in the year 1222. And this being Italy they know how to celebrate in the streets. Amazing to think this ritual has been going on annually for about 800 years. And Padua still has one of the best medical schools in the world. The University has been associated with a large number of important intellectuals such as Copernicus, Galileo, Stendhal and William Harvey, who developed his system of blood circulation here. The university medical school has the oldest anatomy lab in the world and the university also hosts the oldest botanical garden in the world, which was used as a garden of curative herbs attached to the medical school. When done with your visit to Padua you can catch the tram right back to the train station.

Places to see in ( Gallipoli - Italy ) Gallipoli Beach
Gallipoli’s beaches in Puglia are among the most beautiful and best beaches in Italy. There isn’t just one beach in Gallipoli, but many beaches and creeks with rocks and sand. The longest and best known beach is Baia Verde beach, but there are others that you can easily locate in this mini-guide: Lido Conchiglie beach, Padula Bianca beach, Rivabella Beach, Purità beach, and Punta Pizzo beach. Besides Baia Verde beach, of course. The beaches are listed starting from the north of Gallipoli and moving south towards the sea in the Maldives of Salento.
Gallipoli is located on the Ionic coast of Salento, Southern Puglia. It can easily be reached from Lecce using the Lecce – Gallipoli SS101 highway. Gallipoli is located about halfway between Lecce and Santa Maria di Leuca. Gallipoli’s coast is several kilometres long. There are some beaches with fine white sand and there are others with low rocks, especially near the centre of inhabited areas. The beaches are beautiful along the north and south coast; sandy beaches can quickly be found by moving a few kilometres to the north, as well as by moving a few kilometres to the south. The only beach in Gallipoli itself is Purity beach, a small, fantastic gem.
Lido Conchiglie is a village that is about 7 km to the north of Gallipoli. It is a small suburb of the Sannicola municipality, on the outskirts of Gallipoli. Going along the coast from Porto Cesareo towards Gallipoli, Lido Conchiglie can be found just past Santa Maria al Bagno and near the Spaccata Mountain (Montagna Spaccata in italian).
Padula Bianca is the first location to be found in the municipality of Gallipoli, which you will encounter when coming from the southeast of Lido Conchiglie. The beach here is a little less than 3 km long, is full of dunes and great sand and has a Mediterranean feel to it. Padula, in the Salento dialect, means swamp, which is what this area was before its reclamation. Here, there are both establishments providing services and free beaches.
Going to the south, we find the beach of Rivabella, a small village of holiday houses. It’s a nice beach with small dunes, white sand and crystalline sea. There are some places where you can go swimming. In this area, there are several holiday apartments for rent, hotels and campings, supermarkets and small shops. There is also an entertainment center called Parco Acquatico Splash with aquatic games.
As you pass Rivabella, the next sandy beach is the picturesque beach of Purità, or, as the locals here like to call it, Puritate. It is also called the ‘Breast of Purity’ (Seno della Purità in italian), a name that comes from the nearby church dedicated to Saint Maria of Purity. The beach of Purità is a beach inside the historic town centre of Gallipoli, a special site to see. It is located at the foot of the city walls, close to the restaurants and bars on the beach front.
From Gallipoli’s historic town centre, head southwards along the Galilei promenade. After roughly a couple of kilometres of low rocks, we find St. Giovanni, and then the wonderful Baia Verde. It’s a kilometers-long sandy bay. At the center of the bay lies the town centre, which takes its name from ‘Baia Verde’. The area is called the Regional Natural Park of S. Andrea Island. The coastal area of Punta Pizzo consist of several bays with sandy beaches and reefs, from Punta della Suina all the way up to Lido Pizzo.

We had really good lunch before we headed out this day. Went to the Old Castle, Velia Beach, and the New Castle in Cilento, Southern Italy.
If you are in or around Southern Italy, check out this place. It's one of my favorite places in Southern Italy. 6 1/2 years ago, we actually inquired about renting a house in this town. Castelnuovo is such a peaceful town.
