ITALY 2011 Ostuni Alberobello Matera
We are in the South of Italy, in the heel of the boot, in Apulia. Ostuni is known as the white city, built on a hill of white limestone. This is our first destination. Next, we travel to Alberobello where the trulli architecture is truly unique! Dry set stones are arranged in thin layers on the conical shaped roof tops (shielding residents from the hot sun in the summertime). From there we travel to Matera, a lesser known destination for travel in Southern Italy, in the Basilicata Region. Matera was a city built of caves on a deep ravine in Southern Italy, almost unknown to folks in other parts of Italy. People, like Dr. Carlo Levi (who wrote Christ Stopped at Eboli, pub. 1945) was banished to Matera because of his opposition to Fascism (1935). The Sassi remained remote and obscured from most until the 1950's when the Italian government realized the squalor and medieval lifestyle of the residents. Finally in the l960's the last residents of this cave ravine were moved to other housing. Nowadays, the Sassi at Matera has become a trendy place to live; hotels have renovated spaces and you can book a room at a spa hotel. Driving into the modern Matera, it would be difficult to know that this deep ravine exists and much is unknown about its past residents.

Sala Consilina to Eboli : Sicily to Ukraine by camper van part 20

I drive my vehicle through the Italian province Campania, north using the A3 motorway, between the towns of Sala Consilinia and Eboli which are both in the district of Salerno. The motorway more or less follows the path of the River Tanagro which rises in the Diano Valley and is a tributary of the Sele River.
I start off by leaving the motorway facilities at Sala Consilina and describe the facilities there for dumping the waste tank which were a little primative but far better than nothing - and we need to be grateful for that.
I also had an outstanding breakfast which I describe thanks to wonderful coffee from my friend Raffaelo in Augusta, milk products from Castrovillari with olives and bread from the hypermarket in Lauria. There would have been other things as well but I did not describe them.
You can hear the Tomtom satellite navigation device in the camper version which is extremely good in my opinion.
The A3 motorway has sometimes been called the shame of Italy because of the time it has taken to complete it but it is an engineering marvel as can be seen.
On my drive south in December 2012 I was not very impressed but the weather was bad. In much nicer driving weather I find the going much more pleasant.
As well as the scenery, there is my comments on using a camper van in Italy and some of the places you can visit.
This is part of a very long journey in May and June 2013 from Brucoli in Sicily to Bełżec on the Polish - Ukrainian border. From there I travelled to the UK - so the journey was much longer but I did not film the part from eastern Poland to Norwich (UK).

We had really good lunch before we headed out this day. Went to the Old Castle, Velia Beach, and the New Castle in Cilento, Southern Italy.
If you are in or around Southern Italy, check out this place. It's one of my favorite places in Southern Italy. 6 1/2 years ago, we actually inquired about renting a house in this town. Castelnuovo is such a peaceful town.
