Sendai is the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, the largest city in the Tōhoku region, and the second largest city north of Tokyo. As of 1 August 2017, the city had a population of 1,086,012, and is one of Japan's 20 designated cities. The total area of the city is 786.30 square kilometres . The city was founded in 1600 by the daimyō Date Masamune, and is nicknamed the City of Trees ; there are about 60 zelkova trees on Jōzenji Street and Aoba Street .     The Botanical Garden of Tohoku University is a botanical garden operated by Tohoku University at Kawauchi 12-2, Aoba-ku, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It is open daily. The garden was established in 1958. It now includes more than 800 species, with a particular focus on willows and alpine plants, as well as collections of Cactaceae and other succulents, Iris, Lilium, Paeonia, Rosa, Syringa, and conifers such as Podocarpus. Specific species include Belamcanda chinensis, Caltha palustris var. nipponica, Carex podogyna, Lysichiton camtschatcense, Menyanthes trifoliata, Myrica gale var. tomentosa, Potamogeton distinctus, and Primula japonica.
