Sendai is the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, the largest city in the Tōhoku region, and the second largest city north of Tokyo. As of 1 August 2017, the city had a population of 1,086,012, and is one of Japan's 20 designated cities. The total area of the city is 786.30 square kilometres . The city was founded in 1600 by the daimyō Date Masamune, and is nicknamed the City of Trees ; there are about 60 zelkova trees on Jōzenji Street and Aoba Street .     Sendai Daikannon is a large statue of the gem-bearing Nyoirin Kannon form of Kannon , located in Sendai, Japan. It is the tallest statue of Nyoirin Kannon in the world, and the tallest statue of a goddess in Japan. As of 2018, it is one of the top five tallest statues in the world at 100 metres . At the time of its completion in 1991 it was the tallest statue in the world, but has since been surpassed for that title. An elevator takes visitors to the top of the statue, which depicts the Bodhisattva Kannon from Shingon Buddhism. This statue of Kannon bears the Nyoihōju wishing gem in her hand, which classifies her as a version of the Nyoirin Kannon form of Kannon.
