10 Lesser Known Places to Visit in Kashmir
Looking for an escape from the hum-drum of city or work life and you desire to rest your mind at a non-tourist infested place then, take a break and plan a trip Chatpal in South Kashmir. Trust us, it would be perfect dream location with lush green forests, lofty mountains wearing the rings of cloud which in evenings are washed by crimson red sun, limpid springs with milky white water gushing down the mountainous terrain. It is located in the Shangus district. If you rent a car form Srinagar it takes you 3 hours to reach here. Tourists take the Anantnag-Chitergul road to reach the destination. Also people share jeep from Achabal that drops travellers to Chitergul. From Chitergul, tourists can hire a special jeep in order to reach Chatpal which takes 1 hour. The more jaunty and adventurous kind can go for a trek also. There are private tour planners that can help you in planning the trip. Although there are no hotel or guest houses but there is government accommodation bungalow. Few tourist stay in Achabal or Kokernag where there are more options for accommodation. Trip to this place will surely rekindle your spirits.
Nearby places to visit from Chatpal are Aharbal waterfall, Sonmarg, Lolab valley, Gulmarg , Martand temple and Kishtawar National Park.
Chatpal was an unknown name on the itinerary, none of us knew nothing about this place except that it was situated 3 hours away from Srinagar, and no one goes there.
We alighted at Jammu railway station at 3:30 AM, making our ways through the sleeping passengers on the platform, towards the waiting room. However, a peak into the waiting room made us settle for the benches outside. Sleep was miles away from our eyes, midst the excitement about the journey to start. We were about to be on the road for the next one month, and the cameras had already started emerging from the bag, to capture the moments as they happened.
Half an hour later, as we were busy observing the dull proceedings at the railway station, with our eyes following a solitary shunting locomotive, Altamash bhai waved at us to start moving towards the exit. Altamash had joined us as the financial manager for the trip.
The lush green mountains, coupled with clear blue skies were ensuring a fantastic roadtrip, as we saw small waterfalls on the way, tributaries joining Chenab and then by one of those tributaries we travelled till Banihal.
Now personally, I wanted to visit Banihal and check out the railway station, watch trains running in Kashmir valley. Now while I wasn’t able to visit the station, but when everyone was having lunch, I walked towards a clearing and saw the red-white-blue DMU coaches of a train arriving from Srinagar, emerging out of the Banihal tunnel, and then moving through a grassland, as some goats were grazing by the tracks.
Jammu and Kashmir (/ˈdʒæmuː ənd ˌkæʃˈmɪər, ˈdʒʌ-, ˈkæʃmɪər/ (About this sound listen)[2]) is a state in northern India, often denoted by the acronym J&K. It is located mostly in the Himalayan mountains, and shares borders with the states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to the south. Jammu and Kashmir has an international border with China in the north and east, and the Line of Control separates it from the Pakistani-administered territories of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan in the west and northwest respectively. The state has special autonomy under Article 370 of the Constitution of India.[3][4]
A part of the erstwhile Princely State of Kashmir and Jammu, the region is the subject of a territorial conflict among China, India and Pakistan. The western districts of the former princely state known as Azad Kashmir and the northern territories known as Gilgit-Baltistan have been under Pakistani control since 1947. The Aksai Chin region in the east, bordering Tibet, has been under Chinese control since 1962.[note 1]
Jammu and Kashmir consist of three regions: Jammu, the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. Srinagar is the summer capital, and Jammu is the winter capital. Jammu and Kashmir is the only state in India with a Muslim-majority population.[11] The Kashmir valley is famous for its beautiful mountainous landscape, and Jammu's numerous shrines attract tens of thousands of Hindu pilgrims every year. Ladakh, also known as Little Tibet, is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and Buddhist culture.
Chambal - A riverine journey
Chambal - A riverine journey and adventure, Madhya Pradesh, India.
The very name of the valley – ‘Chambal’ – brings to mind images of the dreaded, notorious dacoits of the seventies. It is, therefore, quite difficult to consider Chambal to be a tourist destination; meant for recreation. It is only when one actually comes to the Chambal region does one realize that all that is left of that bygone era- is just the adventure! As safe as any other wilderness area in the country, Chambal promises to thrill even before one actually begins the magnificent journey of exploring its many wonders.
The Chambal river originates in Madhya Pradesh. Flowing through Rajasthan, it ends as a tributary of the Yamuna River in Etawah district of the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh. The river is a lifeline for this region, considering the rich flora and fauna it supports. But this unique wilderness at the heartland of the country – is both untamed and unexplored.
The people seen here are experts on tourism and conservation, who have dedicated years of study to conserve the natural treasures of this region. And now, with a mission to open a world of opportunities for the area, these people take on the Chambal in an expedition, with the sole aim of exploring its countless natural and cultural wonders.
The expedition starts with great cheer and enthusiasm. Jointly organized by the Madhya Pradesh Eco-tourism Development Board and the Madhya Pradesh Forest Dept; it is an adventure worth experiencing!
As the expedition begins, it feels like one is traversing through a different world. As the boat moves along on the calm river, the sense of thrill becomes almost palpable when one comes across an island covered with lazy, sunbathing crocodiles.
This is where the adventure lover’s dreams come true. Witness all the excitement – with crocodiles, ghadiyals, turtles, gangetic dolphins – all close at hand!
Apart from these wonderful creatures, the banks of the Chambal are also home to many resident and migratory waterfowl.
A truly remarkable effort of the state has been the conservation of its natural treasures. A visit to the Eco Centre at Deori leaves one in complete awe of what is silently but significantly being achieved here. The Crocodile centre is the only one of its kind in the entire state of Madhya Pradesh and has recently been opened to public. The centre helps breed and rehabilitate Crocodiles and Gharials in the Chambal. Due to this initiative, the river now boasts of a population of nearly 2, 000 crocodillians. Active efforts are now on to protect the Gangetic River Dolphins.
The members of the expedition, camp alongside the river, completely in sync with nature and their beautiful surroundings. A highly commendable feat of this mission in boosting ecotourism – has been the active involvement of the local residents of the valley. They are involved in the decision-making process and their inputs are treated with utmost importance. Discussions are held at all levels, awareness created about the many vistas that will open up for the valley and its people through the promotion of tourism. All aspects of trade and empowerment through creation of jobs are discussed, keeping in mind the basic aim of nature conservation. The work is carried out through cooperation from both sides – the real reason behind the success of this project.
Besides the magnificent wildlife on and along the Chambal, one can also explore the many ancient caves that date as far back as 2, 000 BC. Explore these mysterious caves and the paintings, sculptures and temples housed therein.
The exploration does not end here. One can experience a camel safari up to Ater Fort.
Situated on the periphery of the National Chambal Sanctuary, the Fort stands majestically along the riverbank. It can be accessed through a pontoon bridge, and the excitement is just beginning... What one witnesses and experiences on the journey up to the fort is captivating. In an ancient land full of ravines, wildlife, legend and folklore, the fort in itself is a marvel – a glorious jewel in the valley.
History, culture, nature, wildlife – the Chambal region is blessed with many wonders – wonders that are best explored and experienced in person…

Khandar Fort - an ancient fort at Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan
View of Khandar Fort an ancient fort located at Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan.
Khandar Fort is very ancient fort located in Khandar Tehsil, Sawai Madhopur district, Rajasthan, India. This fort is on the boundary of Ranthambore National Park. The fort has three big entrances, but they are damaged.
Located on top of a strategic vertical hill, the Khandar Fort in Sawai Madhopur could never come under an easy attack and thus was truly regarded as invincible and was a favorite of many dynasties in India. It is also said that king of this fort never lost in war. This fort also tells some historical stories by the damaged walls and gates.
The fort was long ruled by the Sisodia kings of Mewar after which it was taken over by the Mughals for a short while before coming under the direct control of the Maharajas of Jaipur in the 18th century.
This fort also belonged to Bargujar Kings and was attacked by Allaudin Khilji. It is very near to the rivers as Chambal & Banas.
There are seven temples within the fort. There is an old Jain temple which displays an exquisite work of carved rock idols of Jain Gurus. There is also a Hanuman temple with a single stone idol of Lord Hanuman with a demon under its feet. The other temples at the Khandar Fort are Chaturbhuja Temple, Gobind Devji Temple, Jagatpalji Temple, and Jayanti Mata Temple. Chaturbhuja Temple houses an impressive idol of the four armed God. An annual fair is held at the Jayanti Mata Temple. There is also the beautiful Rani Temple of the Khandar Fort located on top of the highest platform of the fort and perhaps the most magnificent part of the Fort. There are a lot of damaged sculptures here.
Other attractions at the Khandar Fort are the two huge water tanks of Ramkunda and Laxmankunda . Seven small ponds are also there but due to lack of maintenance, only four ponds are clearly visible. Tigers, leopards, and many other wild animals can be easily seen in the fort. There is Maa Jayanti And Bramani's temple in the fort and the place of Jind Baba is also famous . Mr. Bharat Lal Dwivedi, head of a Committee named as Jind Baba Seva Samiti Khandar, is working hard for the development of the esteemed temple of goddess Jayanti.
