Winter at Cape Lookout

It sure didn't feel like winter. There we were again, standing on Shell Point looking out across the Back Sound towards Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout lighthouse on South Core Banks. It was sunny and already in the mid 50's at 10:30 in the morning. It was a perfect window of beauty between rain earlier in the week and the promise of a nasty nor' easter barreling our way and due to arrive sometime overnight.
The six of us slid our kayaks into the water and began the four mile crossing of the Back Sound. Mid way to Bird Island the wind began to gust and the resulting chop added a little excitement for the two virgin coastal paddlers in our group. As we cut across the bar between Cedar Hammock Island and Morgan Island the waters calmed and we picked up speed as we caught the ebb tide that drew us into Blinds Hammock Bay. We gently glided through the bay and out to the edge of Barden Inlet.
As we headed along the tip of Shackleford Banks we were approached by some of the wild horses that watched us almost as curiously as we watched them. Barden Inlet was exceptionally calm and the crossing over to South Core Banks was one of the easiest we have ever made during a tide change. We landed on the banks at the base of Cape Lookout Lighthouse. During the summer this thin strip of beach is often so crowded you have to dodge boats and people to find an open place to pull your kayaks up but on this day we were almost alone.
We ate our lunch as we basked in the sun on the empty beach. By now the temperatures were in the mid 60's and we had to shed some layers to keep from overheating. It felt more like spring than winter. We took a walk across the dunes to the ocean side and walked along the beach. Just a year ago Ladybug and I were just a little ways north on the worse ferry ride ever headed to Ocracoke Island to pick up her kayak. It was just hard to believe it was February.
We returned to our kayaks and prepared to cross back over the inlet that was now slick as glass. We paddled on a side trip into the marsh before headed back to Harkers Island. It was one of the best days on the Banks that we have ever had. As the sun set across the sound we loaded up our gear and bid the banks farewell. Over and over again and again we find ourselves drawn to this magical place.

Von Virginia ausgehend erfolgte dann Mitte des 17.Jahrhunderts die planmaessige Besiedelung. 1689 wurde North Carolina britische Kronkolonie und war die Erste, die ihre Unabhaengigkeit von England proklamierte.
