Somoto is a city and municipality located in the hills of northern Nicaragua, and capital of the department of Madriz. It is around 20 km south-west of Ocotal and 51 km north-west of Estelí. It sits on the Pan-American Highway around 16 km from the Honduran border crossing at El Espino. Founded in pre-Columbian times by Olmec and Aztec immigrants from modern Mexico, Somoto is the economic and cultural heart of Madriz. It has also become a growing tourist centre since the discovery of Somoto Canyon, located 13 km west of the city. The Somoto Canyon National Monument protected area covers an area of approximately 170.31 hectares , of which 125 hectares are in the actual zone of the canyon. The Somoto Canyon National Monument comprises one of 78 protected areas of Nicaragua and is managed by Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources .

Somoto Canyon (2019) Backpacking Nigaragua

In this episode we explore Somoto Canyon. The canyon is located a short distance from the town of Somoto located in northern Nicaragua and is one of Nicaragua's main tourist attractions.

We had a fabulous day with Somoto Canon Adventura Extrema and we wouldn't hesitate in recommending them for your trip.

They day in the Somoto Canyon included hiking, floating in a rubber ring, trip in a boat and if you want a horse ride.

We visited during the dry season so the water level was low, if you want more adventure, then make sure you visit in the wet season when the river will be much higher and faster.

Epic Cliff Jumping in Nicaragua

We hiked out to Somoto Canyon in the North of Nicaragua for some epic cliff jumping. The hike through the canyon took about 8 hours and was filled with climbing, cliff jumping and swimming through narrow passages. We got to do some epic gainers and huge 60 foot cliff jumps.

V srpnu 2017 jsem vyrazil do střední Ameriky, abych prozkoumal kávovou oblast Jinotega a Matagalpa v Nikaragui. Navštívil jsem i města Leon a Granada a viděl ten nejkrásnější západ slunce na sopečném ostrově Ometepe. Byl to fantastický výlet a já na něj nikdy nezapomenu!
