5029 lifts its eight coach load with ease through the deep and dramatic rock cutting at St Annes in glorious sunshine soon after leaving Bristol TM for a day out by the seaside. The sounds echo around in what is effectively a giant soundbox, contrasted by the sound as the train emerges into the more open cutting prior to St Annes Wood tunnel. After the water stop at Frome and transfer to the Weymouth branch, the serious climbing of the day starts when, soon after Yetminster, we see the train from a foot crossing passing through Chetnole Halt onto the steeper gradient to the summit at Evershot. Performance was suitably dramatic and well appreciated by all at the crossing even though we were all covered in volcanic outfall raining down from above! The return trip begins with the challenging climb of Upwey Bank, which summits just after the exit of Bincombe Tunnel, a difficult place to get a view due to the distance to the edge of the cutting and long grass. However, there are a couple of spots where you can just see the tunnel mouth and even in the gathering gloom the results speak for themselves as 5029 blasts its way over the top and on down the other side towards Dorchester. Yeovil was on our way home and we got there earlier than expected, so on the off chance we called in at Pen Mill just in time for a grabshot in the end-of-the-day drizzle, which did nothing to dampen the spirits of the waving daytrippers on board. Pen Mill is a difficult place to get good shots but as ever, the sound of a Castle going about its business more than compensates at the end of a long day.
