Day of the Dead, Giant Kite Festival | Sumpango, Guatemala
The magnificent Giant Kite Festival takes place every year on Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Sumpango, Guatemala. The practice of flying kites during the Day of the Dead goes back several thousand years. It is believed that the kite (or barrilete) creates a connection of communication between the spirits of the dead and their families here on Earth.
In Sumpango, kite makers (barrileteros) work for months from after work to late in the evening to prepare the kites (some as large as 20 meters) for the festival, which takes place on November 1.
The kites resemble giant paintings, similar to a giant mural you would see in Miami's Wynwood Art District or the Bushwick Collective in New York. They are made, however, using layers of hand-cut, colored paper, the same type of thin paper used to line gift boxes(!). The kites are then folded up and taken to the festival where they are fastened to large bamboo poles for display or for flying. I traveled to Sumpango this year with my teenage daughter to capture a few images from this remarkable festival with my Lumix GH4.
Enjoy...

Guatemala -- The Mayan Villages
Guatemala, one of South America's most colourful countries reveals a Spanish style of architecture that is notable in the small villages that surround the old colonial capital of Antigua and which were built with Mayan labour. Churches are decorated with Catholic and Mayan iconography, religious festivals abound and cofradias protect the local shrines. To have a better understanding of the people and their Mayan heritage we travel by local bus to Xecul, Chichicastenago, Lake Atitlan and Santiago exploring the markets and cobblestone laneways that reveal the intriguing character of Guatemala. At this moment I'm traveling solo through mainly Guatemala for 5 months. I'd love to share how I'm doing eating a plant-based diet while traveling in Central America. I started a vegan challenge in April this year and decided to continue this beautiful journey. In the next weeks I'm in Panajachel, Xela and Mexico, so stay tuned for more backpacking videos!

Semuc Champey, Guatemala
Semuc Champey is a natural monument in the department of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, near the Q'eqchi' Maya town of Lanquín. It consists of a natural 300 m limestone bridge, under which passes the Cahabòn River. Atop the bridge is a series of stepped, turquoise pools, a popular swimming attraction. Although it can be difficult to get to, Semuc is becoming more and more popular with travelers. Backpackers have the option of staying in Semuc at either El Portal or Posada de las Marias - two beautiful hostels only a stone's throw away from the park. Posada de Las Marias also boasts a popular cave tour, where for only 50 quetzales, visitors can do a candelight tour in the caves which includes repelling down waterfalls and jumping off one of the caves into a lagoon. Tubing is also possible down the Cahabòn River for only 10 quetzales. Your guide will show you where you can go rock jumping or where off of the drawstring bridge you can go bridge-jumping.
One of the coolest places I have been to in Latin America (and I am missing 3 countries in the whole region - Suriname, Guyane, Guyana). Worth the trip!
