The strategic location of the city of Köszeg in the west of Hungary once determined its fate. : Today Köszeg is one of Europe’s most beautiful castle cities and in the Old Town, the Gate Tower and Captain’s Residence of the main square immediately indicate the city’s long history. The whole of the main square is completely framed by picturesque Baroque buildings and their colourful facades. Köszeg survived World War II undamaged and so it is not surprising that it is known as the most beautiful city in the region. With its gate-tower, the imposing Heroes Gate provides access to the Main Square. Although built in 1932 to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of the Turkish Siege, it blends in perfectly with the surroundings. For the Austrian Habsburgs, Köszeg acted as a bulwark designed to defend Vienna from attack by the Turks, and it worked. The impressive remains of the Synagogue, built in 1859, are a reminder of the city’s former large Jewish community. Köszeg is a jewel of history, a fairy tale idyll!

On the north-western confines of Zalaegerszeg, on the bank of the backwater of the river Zala, Hungary's first open air ethnographic museum, the Göcsej Village Museum, lies in an environment of grassland and groves. It was opened for the public in August 1968.
The principle underlying the settlement and construction of the Göcsej Village Museum in Zalaegerszeg was to show, through the most beautiful examples of the archaic types of buildings still available, the line of development which was at the end of the l9th century already on the decline. In this regional open air museum a small village consisting of nearly 50 original buildings has been set up arranged on crofts. The buildings demonstrate folk architecture, techniques and modes of construction, characteristic of Göcsej (Zala County) and its vicinity. The furniture of the houses is to present the interior decoration of peasant houses in the area at the end of the l9th century.

The High Tatra is the smallest high mountain range in Europe, a magnificent mountain landscape with majestic rocky mountains and many lakes. The High Tatra National Park was founded in 1947 and is an imposing natural paradise in the heart of Slovakia. Its mountains were created when, in primeval times, the outliers on the southern and eastern edge of the Tatra Massif were forced within a deep graben. Here there is much high mountain plant life, fine endemic species of the Carpathians, and glacial remains. A healthy tree population surrounds crystal clear mountain lakes which came into existence at the end of the Last Ice Age. The Tatra Railway travels from Štrbské Pleso Station which connects a number of the Tatra region’s spa resorts. At first, the line travels alongside a mountain road… with a good view of the local flora. A journey on the comfortable and tram-like carriages became an indispensable means of transport for growing Tatra tourism. In 1892, the region’s first spa and spacious parks were built at Tatranská Lomnica, with government assistance. It includes a botanical garden in which numerous typical mountain plants thrive, as well as rare and endangered species. The mountain station of the Lomnitz Peak appears from within the clouds. The surrounding area is breathtakingly beautiful and the ridges and peaks of the Tatra line up picturesquely. Located deep below, several small mountain lakes appear from among the rocks. What has emerged is an imposing natural paradise, the remarkable Tatra Mountains that are accessible by both road and rail.
