Delhi – Shimla – Kaza (791 KMs) AND Delhi – Manali – Kaza (772 KMs) is just mere 19 KMs. However, you can reach Manali that is 570 KMs of drive within a day or about 12 Hrs journey from Delhi due to mostly excellent and wide roads leading to it. Next day, remaining 202 KMs can be done to reach Kaza by evening. However, as discussed in previous article you have to brave the AMS as the altitude difference is abrupt while we travel this route as apparent in graphs below. But, if you are short on number of days and road to Spiti Valley from Manali is open, better run through it to save a day for you and also fatigue levels. You can always descend to Tabo to control the AMS by starting 2 Hrs early from Manali.

Tabo at a Glance HD - Spiti, Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh 2014 Memories – Vid 13
Evening of 30th April saw us at Tabo – our first destination in Spiti valley. We were the first customers of the season at Hotel Dewachen Retreat – the only shelter open in the town. Next morning we were awakened by sparrows continuously chattering away on trees in the compound. A cup of tea in hand standing at the balcony and savoring the rugged beauty of the place with backdrops of snow-capped hills is perhaps the best way to begin the day. Breakfast done, a small walk and we get a look at the famed oldest functioning monastery, Buddhist temples and Chortens ( stupas ). A trek on the hill takes one to a few caves, which were built as a resting place for monks. The bird’s view of the town looks spectacular from there. A walk to the local village is an eye opener. The single storied cottages with hays stacked on roof make it a thriving place for innumerable sparrows. The typical village activities can be witnessed at leisure. A lone villager was collecting clay-soil in plastic bags as a part of daily chore for the Greenhouse, nurturing flower saplings, spinach and other tiny leafy plants. With the advent of summer, the agri-plots were showing a lot of activities like digging, shoveling and preparing the soil to make it cultivable. The lone apple tree, totally covered with pink colored buds and some blossoming as white flowers, looks grand against the deep blue sky. On return trip, it is worthwhile watching children frolicking on roadside and make best use of their simple toys.
