Lake Te Anau is the largest lake in the South Island and within New Zealand second only to Lake Taupo. The 2013 census recorded the town's population as 1,911. The town has a wide range of accommodation, with over 4,000 beds available in summer.Tourism and farming are the predominant economic activities in the area.   • 1. Fiordland Helicopters Te Anau
    Fiordland National Park occupies the southwest corner of the South Island of New Zealand. It is the largest of the 14 national parks in New Zealand, with an area of 12,607 square kilometres , and a major part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. The park is administered by the Department of Conservation.

    Te Anau Aerodrome was established in the 1940s, located beside State Highway 95 just south of the lakeside town. A compacted grass strip of approximately 800m long allowed light aircraft to land. Amphibian aircraft that serviced the lake also used the small airport if weather conditions on the lake were unfavourable. The site was considered too restrictive for larger aircraft to land. A large powerstation project in the 1960s at nearby Lake Manapouri saw a new paved strip built 12km to the south of Te Anau to service the work force. This airport was owned by Mount Cook Airline and was used for their services into the region.
