The Painted Mosque In Tetovo - North Macedonia - Balkan Travel Blog
If you're wondering if you should take the trip from Skopje to Tetovo to see this beautiful painted mosque, the answer is yes. It's beautiful inside and out and the people there were very welcoming.

We arrived just as an older gentleman wearing a white skullcap was opening the doors to the Šarena Džamija, and he ushered us inside, speaking German. It turned out that he had spent a decade working in Jürgen’s home town of Darmstadt.

20 - Backpacking Republic of Macedonia
Incredible hitchhiking journey; enjoying Skopje, cooling off in Matka canyon, interacting with locals in Mavrovo, and beautiful Lake Ohrid.

Continuing on with my Balkan voyage brings me to my last and final former republic of the former Yugoslavia. From Prishtina, Kosovo, I arrived in the capital city of Skopje. Skopje is an interesting city due to the two sides that are complete opposites. In the east of the river, you have the old town Bazaar which resembles a little Istanbul, with many small cafes and mosques. Crossing the old stone bridge to the other side of the river, is the new side. Skopje 2014 was a massive makeover for this city, and now many monuments, statues, and new/renovated buildings stand in the old square and around the city. While the makeover is not accepted by many Macedonians, it certainly has brought a new personality to the center, and it's quite interesting.
Skopje, next to Athens and Podgorica was one of the hottest cities I've been to on my European voyage. Fortunatly, the nearby Matka Canyon was the means to cool off in the shade as well as in the COLD COLD COLD river. In this canyon, you can rent kayaks as well as take boat tours down the canyon. For me, I was good enough with a nice walk along the path down the canyon. In the end, it was definitely the place to cool off.
On my travel day, I was initially going to catch a bus to avoid the heat. And I was persuaded not to. But last minute, I hit the edge of the city, and found a ride to Tetovo and another to my desired stop, Mavrovo National Park. This is a massive park in the west of the country bordering Albania with many beautiful lakes, mountains, valleys, and villages. I was lucky enough to catch a ride with a Dutch couple going to Ohrid and also lucky enough to join them on a journey finding a waterfall. In the process, we picked up a villager who was kind enough to all the way to the waterfall, Duf Falls. After we were greeted and wished a great journey away, we stopped for a beer and enjoyed more view of the mountains before parting ways in Ohrid and being welcomed into my Airbnb.
In Ohrid, I was extremely lucky to have one of the most budget friendly but valued Airbnb's to date. I had a full kitchen and dining room on one floor with a bed room and terrace on the second floor with a pretty nice view of the lake for only 20 Euros. What a steal. As for my time in this region, due to the heat and the long day before, I simply enjoyed roaming around town and skipped the boat excursion across the lake. I enjoyed my last meal of Cevapi, walked the waterfront, walked through the town, up Samuel's Fortress for panoramic views of Mavrovo, the town, the Lake, the Albanian border and beyond. And to end the day just right, I enjoyed the picturesque view of St Johns church over the lake and enjoyed a nice sunset swim in the lake to cool off after a week of extreme hot weather.
To wrap up my time in the former Yugoslavia, I finally caught a short ride in a Yugo and hitchhiked my way to the Albanian border to Tirana.
I not only had the pleasure of spending a memorable time in Macedonia but a pleasure of befriending many incredible people. :)

Twelfth Century Church of St. Panteleimon, Macedonia
The small Twelfth Century Byzantine Church of St. Panteleimon, patron saint of physicians, was constructed in 1164 (and rebuit, and destroyed, and rebuilt - unfortunately like most churches in Macedonia). As guide Goran stated in the beginning of this tour, If you have no interest in churches, Macedonia is not the place for you. Well... Churches do start to bore until a tidbit of information turns the tide. Oh, all right, two tidbits of information.
1. Fresco images here show EXPRESSION on their faces and realistic touches. Before this time, faces were always painted straight on without expression; and
2. The Church's stucco decoration is depicted on the reverse of a Macedonian 50 Denar banknote.

The Republic of Macedonia, (Macedonian: Република Македониjа, Republika Makedonija) is a landlocked country in the Balkans. It is ordered by Serbia and Kosovo to the north, Albania to the west, Bulgaria to the east, and Greece to the south.
While easily accessible from all points abroad, and boasting all the amenities of the Western world, the Republic of Macedonia remains one of Europe’s last undiscovered countries: a natural paradise of mountains, lakes and rivers, where life moves to a different rhythm, amidst the sprawling grandeur of rich historical ruins and idyllic villages that have remained practically unchanged for centuries. The majority population is ethnic Macedonian and Orthodox but there is also a significant Albanian Muslim minority. Therefore, one can expect a wonderful mix of architectural and ethnic heritage. The country represents the Balkans in the truest sense, consisting of a fascinating mix of Macedonian, Albanian, Turkish, and Mediterranean influences.
Macedonia is a country with many ethnic minorities. There is still some ethnic tension between Albanians (who form the majority in the northwest) and Macedonians, so this is a subject best avoided. It almost came to civil war a few years ago.
Macedonia is covered by mountainous territory marked by deep basins and valleys filled with fruity goodness. There are three large lakes, Ohrid lake, Prespa lake and Dojran lake, each divided by a frontier line, and the country bisected by the Vardar River.
Cities :
Skopje, the nation's capital. It is home to many historic landmarks and architectural monuments, and a great deal of cultural places of interest.
Ohrid, a lakeside resort and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered the jewel in Macedonia's crown.
Bitola, the second largest city. It is Macedonia's most European town. It has it all: an ancient city, Ottoman monuments, a lovely shopping promenade, great nightlife, and more.
Kruševo, a museum-city nestled high up in the mountains of southwestern Macedonia. It is one the most historically significant destinations in the country as it was the site of a revolt against the Ottoman Empire. The town is also home to great skiing.
Prilep, tobacco fields, medieval monasteries, and strange rocks.
Struga, small town on Lake Ohrid. It receives a fraction of the amount of tourists that nearby Ohrid gets, making Struga much more calm and peaceful.
Štip, a peaceful city in eastern Macedonia. The town has existed for thousands of years, which is evidenced by its many archaeological sites.
Kumanovo, the third largest city. The area boasts many churches, pre-modern settlements, and more.
Tetovo, majority of the population is ethnic Albanians. Home to the Painted Mosque and Monastery of Lešok.
Radoviš, a small city in southeastern Macedonia, famous for the new Holy Trinity Orthodox Church.
Strumica, a vibrant city in the warm, sunny southeast. Progressive Strumica is home to great shopping, nearby hiking, waterfalls and hot springs, and the legendary Strumica Carnival.

Republic of Macedonia has two international airports, the main airport in the capital Skopje International Airport Skopje (SKP) and another in Ohrid St.Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD). There are around 150 flights in a week from different European cities to Skopje. Macedonian Government awarded one Turkish Airport Operator Company (TAV) a contract to construct a brand new Terminal building in Skopje Airport. Construction was completed in October 2011.
Macedonia is a small country but there are a lot of things to see in it. Its capital Skopje is the biggest city and upcoming European city, with the Vardar river running right trough it. It has a multitude of sights worth seeing: Kale fortress is kind of a city symbol. Right under it lays the beautiful Old Bazaar with many cafeterias and restaurants. Its main sights are St. Spas Church, Kurshumli An and many more. Over the famous Stone Bridge you can get to the main square Macedonia where you can see the 22-meter statue of the ancient Macedonian leader Alexander the Great, as well as the biggest shopping center in the city ГТЦ. Other interesting sights are the Memorial House of Mother Teresa and the Millennium Cross on the top of mountain Vodno, which is a 66-meter cross and it is the biggest cross ever built. It is reachable by the newly opened cablecar and by foot. It is possible to walk up and take the cablecar back down, paying the fare upon arrival.
Štip, Macedonia
Štip (Macedonian: Штип) is the largest urban agglomeration in the eastern part of the Republic of Macedonia, serving as the economic, industrial, entertainment and educational focal point for the surrounding municipalities.
As of the 2002 census, the Štip municipality alone had a population of about 47,796.
Štip is the largest textile production center in the country; Center of the fashion industry in Macedonia, as well as the location of the sole public university in eastern Macedonia, Goce Delčev University of Štip.
