2. Marksburg CastleBraubach The Marksburg is a castle above the town of Braubach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is one of the principal sites of the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress was used for protection rather than as a residence for royal families. It has a striking example of a bergfried designed as a butter-churn tower. The St Maurus Chapel was the first architectural project of Father Desiderius Lenz, in Beuronese art.
Peter Desiderius Lenz (1832--1928) was a Benedictine monk and along with Gabriel Wuger a founding member of the Beuron Art School.
Beuronese art is principally known for its murals with muted, tranquil and seemingly mysterious colouring. It was based on the elements of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and early Christian art.
The chapel is situated near Beuron, at the Danube break-through at the Swabian Jura in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
