Kalinga province - PHILIPPINES
Kalinga province is on Luzon, north of Philippines. It is a really nice place to do trekking ! Gorgeous mountains, rice terraces and really friendly people. There we did a 3 days/2 nights trekking without any guide. It was cheaper and much better without. We have been welcome really well everywhere we went with free food and accommodation !
WHANG OD Tattoo... GONE WILD?
In this Philippines travel vlog, I head to Kalinga in northern Luzon to find the tattoo artist legend Apo Whang Od. The last mambatok, a style of traditional tattoo found only in the Philippines.
The people of Kalinga were head hunters. Buscalan, the home of Wang Od was particularly famous for their strange tradition of tattooing. They thought tattoos were beautiful, and the women would cover themselves in full body tattoos to attract men. The men however, would have to earn their tattoos by bringing back the heads of rival tribes. The more ink, the greater the warrior.
After being featured recently in a documentary, and multiple TV shows, visiting Whang-Od and her granddaughters has become a tourist attraction. Many people make the trip from Manila to receive one.
It's about a 12h bus ride north of Manila to Sagada, from there, it's another 4 hours to the trail to Buscalan, then an hour walk.
To my filipino and filipina fans. Would do you get a tattoo from Apo Whang Od?
Big thanks to my friends Joan of Art, Ken's life Journey, and Hannah for all the help organizing this trip!

Buscalan Tattoo village | LEGENDARY APO WHANG-OD of Philippines
How to travel from Manila to the Mountain province of Buscalan and get a Kalingan Batok tattoo from the Legendary Apo Whang Od. I opted to go with some of my Filipino coworkers who arranged an awesome trip through Walwa Tours. The overnight drive is a 10+ hour trip, the climb is challenging, especially in the rainy season, but the village nestled amongst the Rice Terraces is totally off the grid; way up there in the clouds.
Apo Whang Od is the only remaining Grandmaster in the Philippines of this ancient cultural art form. This Kalinga Batok is a traditional tribal tattoo that is shifting from it’s roots in a savage 1,000 year old headhunting history to a current and modern trendiness.
This was a dying art, that is seeing a resurgence in popularity. The training involves a lot of coordination and precision in order to apply the tattoo at 100 hand taps per minute.
This ancient art has become very popular, tourism is changing the way of life for this unique traditional mountain dwelling culture. The village is struggling to adapt to the influx of people seeking the honor of a signature tattoo. I believe the indigenous people can evolve a symbiosis with the visitors to help maintain the eco-structure of the village.
Change is inevitable in life, one must embrace it, adapt to it and transform. Hopefully the traditional elements of the culture will be preserved in it’s inevitable evolution.

This 3-day trip was epic!
We went to Buscalan village in Kalinga province for my birthday, where we got done tattoos by the soon-to-be Philippine National Artist, Apo Whang Od. She is the last Mambabatok, those who use traditional methods in creating tattoos. Basically she uses charcoal for ink, and bamboo spines for needles. She then hammers the needle down to your skin. It was an experience we will never forget!
Afterwards we went to Sagada, a tourist destination somewhat in the middle of Kalinga and Baguio, famous for its cold weather, natural wonders and adventurous activities like hiking, spelunking and canyoneering.
